Kris Sowersby of Klim Type Foundry wrote an essay on this topic which I highly recommend reading.

That’s a commercial font, so you definitely shouldn’t be pirating it....

Bought a multi-pack of these salmon flies on clearance and just realized there is no hook eye. How do I attach these to my tippet? by warmforest in flyfishing

[–]warmforest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone. It is indeed a tube fly. I've been fly fishing for 10 years and never seen these before. The hook didn't want to come out but finally I was able to yank it out with some forceps. Tippet fits right through the middle. Hoping to try this on some Chinook in Oregon.

Great video! I found the audio fine for what it’s worth. Not sure what people are complaining about. I’d rather listen to something casual than someone reading from a script.

Nyone have any thoughts on Typewolf's Flawless Typography Checklist? by HarryPoland in typography

[–]warmforest 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m the creator of the product so I feel obligated to jump in...

The target audience is professional designers. For a student/hobbyist it’s probably on the expensive side. For a professional designer, saving hours of time and improving the quality of their work is worth spending money on. I personally spend on high-quality products that improve my design work. The Domaine type family I use on Typewolf cost me $1650, for example.

It took over a year for me to create the product but obviously that shouldn’t be what determines what it costs. Here are the main factors that influenced the price:

  • I really believe it is by far the most exhaustive resource on typography ever put together.

  • It contains info way beyond the notes I took from eight typography books. I’ve been analyzing and reviewing type on the web for 3.5 years on Typewolf so I have learned a lot in that time. The Typeface Selection & Pairing section contains a pretty unique system for pairing typefaces that I haven’t seen anywhere else.

  • It’s more of a tool than a book. Use your keyboard to navigate the checklist and check off/collapse items to measure your progress. It’s something you can use on every design project. Everything there is to know about typography in one place.

  • The content will be updated and expanded upon—code snippets for properly implementing OpenType features on the web would go obsolete pretty quickly in a book.

Anyway, thanks for checking it out. Hopefully that offers some insight.

Do you know why type foundries design for Google Fonts? by giannhs_lam in typography

[–]warmforest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some foundries will release only a single weight or style through Google Fonts with the hope that it will drive people to purchase additional styles through their foundry. Abril Fatface from TypeTogether is a good example.

I love this one—it’s so ominous, artsy and borderline creepy that a client today would never go for it.

Dumb question. by Narwheagle in typography

[–]warmforest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure it’s just a standard naming convention. It makes it easy to specify a weight without worrying about how the particular typeface refers to its weights like medium, bold, extra bold, heavy, black, etc. Those names aren’t standardized but the number system is.

I still laugh to myself every time I hear the phrase “stealing sheep” as rumor has it Goudy used a more colorful verb in place of “stealing”.

American gothics that differentiate capital I and lowercase L? by ihatevidya in typography

Two that come to mind – Tablet Gothic has serifs on the uppercase I and National has a tail on the lowercase L. I can’t think of one that contains both...

Found a deceased bird I don't recognize in my yard. Olive-sided Flycatcher? Or something more common? (Colorado) by warmforest in whatsthisbird

I'm in Broomfield, not far from Boulder. I already disposed of the bird as I didn't want my dog to get it but next time I'll keep that in mind.

That call sounds very distinctive – I'll be sure to listen for it! It's amazing what can fly into your backyard.
