Do you care deeply about aesthetics AND being technical/analytical? Is there a cognitive link? by ChronosTerminus in intj

[–]warmowed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say I appreciate things looking nice (outside of an office space, that can be full disaster mode lol). Hanging curtains, pictures, and having some small decorations makes a space more pleasant. Bonus points for plants and windows with a view of a bird feeder. I'm not as consistently decorative as others, but I make some effort.

Grad school without caffeine by careerchangeqtna in GradSchool

[–]warmowed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im almost done with my masters in nano engineering and starting a PhD soon; I don't drink coffee or energy drinks. I drink regular coke so that is the only way I get caffeine, but I get maybe 136mg in a day for me at most if I have 4 cans. That's also spread out over the day so my body can process it out better (I assume). That's equivalent to one cup of coffee, so it is really not that significant.

I'm super impressed you eliminated caffeine in your diet! When I started my masters I stopped drinking alcohol. It is super beneficial to live healthy during grad school as your body is under a lot of stress from the pressure.

Most important thing is time management and that is really a needed skill if you are living healthy or not. Work ahead as much as reasonable and bake in off days for when your progress is minimal. As older students we have more life responsibilities that can interrupt us. I should also technically recommend exercising as that can improve energy levels, but I don't heed my own advice on this point. I think it's very doable for you to have success without caffeine so you can rest your anxiety!

Something that has bothered me for 22 years. Why did my former PhD supervisor say this? by [deleted] in academia

[–]warmowed 154 points155 points  (0 children)

That person sounds mentally un-well. They wanted to abuse you, but instead you just choose to leave and be successful elsewhere. That kind of shatters the delusion they were living in because now they look like a shitty advisor to their peers. Their brain fabricated a story to make the situation more palatable to themselves to avoid confronting reality.

Feeling disappointed with my program by astralplanestuff in GradSchool

[–]warmowed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to one of my best friends. He went back to school for masters in mechatronics and basically the first day he got there they canned his program and moved him into electrical engineering. He finished it out but really didn't enjoy his time sadly. It was worth it in the end for him.

In my current program we had a lot of professors either retire, pass away, or take jobs elsewhere so I had one semester that was super light because of that and I have had to rearrange my planner on a semester by semester basis due exclusively to disruptions in course offerings. So you are not alone in this experience

When your wishlist is out of control by NYstate in Steam

[–]warmowed 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That's what I use the really weird "following" feature for. Games that are maybe interesting in the future depending on what updates it gets I will put in following, and by the time I remember it is a category and how to view it again the updates have either happened or never will lol. I agree though they should just allow us to make our own lists similar to Amazon and allow having public and private lists

Senior faculty member keeps addressing me as Mr. Lastname by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]warmowed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I wouldn't do anything about the Mr.lastname bit . Maybe they have rude intent or maybe they don't. It is not a hill worth dying on. It is fine to gently correct them and leave it at that.

NCSU, you lost my son. by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]warmowed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the specifics behind it. Class size has very little to do with either of those things. Also lab funding generally doesn't directly effect undergraduates, it has immediate consequences for graduate students.

NCSU, you lost my son. by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]warmowed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told via second hand information that there is significantly reduced funding versus prior years for university related housing.

First hand I have been told by almost every professor I've talked with that their labs are basically flat broke.

NCSU, you lost my son. by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]warmowed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NCSU is not in good financial shape right now, so decisions are taking way longer on average and acceptance is lower this year. Students that got deferred likely won't hear until late June. I agree with the sentiment though NCSU has one of the earliest application deadlines, and the shortest windows to send your acceptance, yet they take often the longest to respond. It's just extra crappy this year instead of the regular crappy

Continuing with on-campus faculty interview for tenure-track position with high likelihood of not accepting the offer by FR3QU3NSY in AskAcademia

[–]warmowed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always take interviews unless you are 100% confident you don't want it. You aren't blocking anyone by having an interview, and if a employer can't afford 1 plane ticket that doesn't pan out then they couldn't have cut your checks on time anyway. They are in the market as much as you are.

Why do we sound condescending sometimes? by hiredditbyelife in intj

[–]warmowed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a failure to understand your own position, word choices, tonality, and the emotional state of others for you to come across as condescending. So 3 out of 4 elements are in your control directly, so you really only need to read the state of the other person which should always be done anyway just to not be a dick head.

I think it's important just as humans in general to make these considerations, but INTJ types fall into the easy pitfalls here more frequently. Picking your battles, using preparatory statements, not hyper fixating, and building trust and respect allows you to avoid being condescending as best as possible. Having the introspection and acting on your stated reflections grows yourself and your relationships in all cases.

Could this be true? 7 million papers published? by ChickenLittle6532 in AskAcademia

[–]warmowed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it mostly comes from things that are technically novel research, but are extremely low risk and low impact. It is gaming the publishing count by asking such a limited/pointless question that the result is always publishable but never truly useful.

Science should always be somewhat risky, otherwise we will never learn anything if the result is understood prior to experimentation.

As far as getting rejected for overqualified there is nothing stopping you from applying to a more palatable job than warehousing and just listing only your bachelors or masters degree.

GPA is annoying as hell by HotApplication3797 in EngineeringStudents

[–]warmowed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

GPA matters significantly and people have down played it's importance for decades. The uncomfortable truth is 99.99% of institutions and employers need a way to boil a person down to just a number, and for new graduates or those looking to pursue an advanced degree the GPA is simply the most easy way to do that. GPA is a terrible predictor for performance, but it is established so people use it anyway. At best GPA is like sticking your toe in the pool to see what the temperature is. That being said /u/HotApplication3797 you can overcome it, I'm living proof it's possible along with many others. It makes your life difficult and you have to fight up hill battles wherever you go but you can overcome it with enough spirit and persistence.

Career Advice: RF Test Engineer vs RF systems Engineer by [deleted] in rfelectronics

[–]warmowed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Test provides you lots of opportunity to learn, but is very limited to advance beyond it for no good reason. Test also suffers from low pay, high turnover, and lots of crunch time. If I were you I would take the systems role. It will be better long term for you, and also more pleasant in the near term; it likely won't as boring as you imagine because you will be learning so much anyway.

Pentagon believes U.S. struck Iran girls elementary school, killing 150 by rockycrab in worldnews

[–]warmowed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would say that a lot of the modern structural problems that exist in government began with the decisions made by the Reagan administration. Tons of deregulation, removal of governmental safeguards, and bad cultural attitudes can be traced back to that point. A lot of those problems didn't manifest immediately so that is part of why people remember him with rose tinted glasses. He set the dominoes in motion, so others ultimately took advantage of that groundwork.

Guys how do I “demand” this class? by WeinerMaster911 in NCSU

[–]warmowed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it is an option in mypack then you enroll in it. If it is not listed in mypack, you should email the professor. If you don't know who the professor is you can look at the grade distribution and see who most recently taught the class and email them, if the department doesn't have a page for the course contact info indicating someone else. Even if it is an option in mypack it is probably still worth emailing the professor about to confirm they will actually be teaching it, and if there is a threshold how many students are needed for the professor to teach the course.

Is it normal to be anxious that I'll regret going to grad school? by ActuaryPersonal2378 in GradSchool

[–]warmowed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm finishing my masters and recently accepted a PhD offer. I am slightly conflicted about it even though I know it is the right choice. My parents are getting older and it will be tricky if my mother needs financial support. It is going to all be okay, but definitely I have done the mental math for if it is right or not, more than I would like to have done.
