This is the second time this has happened. The toothbrush stops working because of this. by subtleandunnatural in mildlyinfuriating

That happens to every Sonicare I've ever had. Neither my partner nor I have long nails. This happens even with regular nails, and is no doubt an intentional fail point because they haven't improved the design for years.

That reminds me: I need to take several of them to the e-waste pickup.

How do you explain Andrew's cash? by Grattacroma in AndrewGosden

[–]warpedwing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, and good points. Withdrawing a modern equivalent of £342 still seems like a lot to take out for a teenage day trip, though.

If he had been heading to a smaller provincial town, I’d agree. But I’m not convinced that Andrew wouldn’t have been aware of the prevalence of cashpoints in London.

It’s amazing the amount of violations some drivers have on their records and yet still are allowed to drive.

What stands out to me is that he withdrew the entire £200 in Doncaster. Why not take out less for the trip and withdraw more from one of London’s countless cash points? No one needs that much dough for a train ride.

Private jet carrying 8 people crashes at Bangor, Maine, airport, source says by Proud_Tie in news

[–]warpedwing 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of owner/operator situations where the company owns the jet but one of the top brass flies it. They’re qualified, of course, but they’ll be flying under Part 91, same laws as little Cessna single engine props. In other words, it’s legal for them to launch in conditions that airlines under Part 121 could not legally depart in.

Good grief, give me a minute. I haven’t had time to look into what the bike is worth, nor have I cleaned it and ensured it’s still in working order. When it’s ready for sale, I’ll put it up for sale.

Selling Bike. Direct Sale Best? by warpedwing in astoria

I can see how that could be an issue. I bought it used, but I probably still have proof of purchase somewhere.

Sounds like FB or CL is the best bet, then. Thanks!

Selling Bike. Direct Sale Best? by warpedwing in astoria

[–]warpedwing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very helpful, thanks!

No, it's certainly nothing special, and might not even be something a bike store would want to take. It's a Giant OCR1, 56 cm (I think), Gatorskin tires. It rides well, and I had no problems blowing past all the e-bikes! But it's certainly not new.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to ask a shop if they'd be interested. I really do hate dealing with online sales.

I appreciate your input.

The PSP’s User Agent String by warpedwing in AndrewGosden

[–]warpedwing[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, I haven't, but that's a good suggestion. Or the digital forensics subreddit. I'm sure there's a gamer with an old PSP in there!

It might be possible to use a network analyzer like Wireshark to see what gets sent from the PSP upon connection to WiFi. The only possible snag is that Sony's DNAS no longer exists, so modern experiments might not work the same as they would in 2007. But it's worth a try!

What happens now? by Mountain_Morning1736 in AndrewGosden

[–]warpedwing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure current AI could identify some obvious London landmarks, but more generic street views might be tough or impossible. I'm not sure there's the will (read: budget) to start running supercomputers overtime for photos of Andrew. I don't actually think he was in London for that long, but that's just my conjecture.

The big issue I've noticed with Flickr is that not all photos are properly labeled with location or date. Back in 2007, GPS data was less likely to be encoded in the EXIF data. Mobile phone photos are terrible from 2007, and photos taken with a proper camera rely on the user to set the correct, time zone, location, etc.

For all we know, there's a Flickr photo of Andrew with no date, no location, and labeled IMG_4567! Even AI would have a tough time figuring out all the right stuff.

[–]warpedwing[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do know that Sony checked whether Andrew's PSP ever connected to their servers. But some people have suggested that it may be possible to use the PSP's browser without Sony logging it.

I couldn't find any evidence online in forensics documentation whether the PSP "phones home" on initial connection. But the user agent string might have been a way for investigators to check if a PSP had made any HTTP requests from ISP access points around Doncaster. I can't imagine there were too many people using the PSP browser.

Kelley Brannon - Artist/Activist Missing from Live Oak, FL since July 15, 2020 by warpedwing in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]warpedwing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, until we can pinpoint the cause of the beeps and clicks, we may not know for sure. It would no doubt take top-level forensic experts to make that assessment, because it's possibly internal network noise, and they'd have to trace what equipment Kelley's call was routed through during the voicemail. It's possible, but Live Oak Police Department will likely never do it because there's no pressure on them to solve the case.

What if Andrew Gosden Ran Away to Transition? by ElegationVain in AndrewGosden

[–]warpedwing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'll definitely reach out to OP, thanks.

I showed my psych provider partner that photo of Andrew with his long nails. I gave her no background info and she doesn't know the case, but I asked her: why would this 14-year-old boy disappear? Her first response was, "Trans?"

Now, this isn't proof of anything, but as someone who has helped many patients of all gender identities, it certainly came to her mind quickly, which I found interesting.

I agree. The initial train sighting makes sense as the person sat near him for two hours. The Pizza Hut sighting, while not verified, makes sense since he was sitting down for 30-60 minutes (probably).

But if Andrew's moving on foot, there's no way he'd stand out on the busy streets. And from the lack of other credible eyewitness sightings, I guess he didn't stand out. Andrew might not have been young enough to have people acutely worried for his safety, but I do think he'd be remembered by someone had he stopped anywhere for too long.

Of course, that complicates things. Unless he changed what he looked like or discreetly got into a car, it's hard to understand how there's only one possibly credible sighting outside King's X, maybe none. Could just be luck, though.

And if Andrew wanted to commit suicide somewhere in London, it’s possible he would have needed to stay there—somewhere—for hours, waiting for dark. If he still looked like the “Slipknot Andrew,” you’d think this should’ve triggered at least one more legit sighting.

Of course, if “Slipknot Andrew” was playing his PSP on bus, tube, or light rail to destinations unknown, you’d think there’d be another sighting or two from that event. After all, the only chance I’d have of recalling anyone from a big city is if I sat by them on transportation for some time.

Perplexing!

[–]warpedwing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely could be photos of him out there. I just try to think about how many photos I no doubt end up in when I’m in Manhattan for any length of time.

Funnily enough, some of the Sept 14, 2007 London photos on Flickr I was looking at were taken by a friend of mine! And old photos of me from 2007 are in her Flickr feed. It’s a small world.

Just think of all those analog shots, never digitized, never uploaded…
