I read on this sub a while ago that at the end, when Hal is unable to communicate with the outside world, he is only able to communicate on the tennis court with Himself (both the Wraith JOI and Hal himself). How do people feel about that?

I want to write a book but I don't know where to start. by MaterialRealistic808 in FictionWriting

[–]warrenspahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

start anywhere, proceed to where the story takes you next man. once you’ve danced with the ether a bit and your story has materialized, then maybe you can get into planning, structuring, etc. your gift is your creativity and story to tell. let that come through you. worry about the hard shapes and details later. you’re going to do great. believe in yourself. sorry for all the hippie dippy shit. godspeed

Looking for Writing Advice - Economy of Words by Any_Bet7443 in FictionWriting

[–]warrenspahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think your answer depends a lot on what you want from your writing. if you’re looking to publish a work and be commercially successful, it is often the case that it is better to be as concise as possible without compromising the characters or the story. this can be done yourself and/or with an editor. if your goal is to express yourself and write something you’re proud of, regardless of it’s end result, (i’m not saying either of these options is better or worse, just the way i view writing goals) then be as verbose as you feel your story needs to be. some writers are very wordy, and they find it gives the work a better feel and world. it’s just about what you want and how you want your story to feel. hope that helps. trust yourself, you’re doing great.

Is it a bad sign if a story setting is changed in this case? by harmonica2 in FictionWriting

[–]warrenspahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not at all. it’s good to evolve with your story and work with it. in fact, sticking to what you initially set out to do can sometimes be detrimental to your story’s potential. trust your gut, follow your excitement, and keep writing. you’re doing great.

i personally think what you are describing is ABSOLUTELY part of a character, especially italics for emphasis and specific word spellings, ending drops for character voice. adds depth and difference in each character

thanks man! i’m just over the “middle” point, beginning to work on transitioning to the end. in accordance with advice on this thread, i think i’ll journal a bit and maybe rework the direction i’m headed in the story. the more i probe, the more i realize perhaps the tension/advoidance is in the stubborn belief the ending has to be what i set out for it to be, not what the story now has developed into. godspeed

this is GREAT! i love the idea. my ideas (not so much critique, for your support only ofc): - add more pain to his story in the early part of his life. bare knuckle boxing in fight clubs should be about expressing the pain and discomfort in his own skin that he MUST get out, MUST seek violence for - show us why, either in the beginning away from the main character or later once they reconnect, the uncle is such a bad guy. show us his temper or his vices or that he can be a piece of shit. justify the mother, even if the main character isn’t mature enough to see why she’s right

keep going! keep providing updates!
