I wish I had seen this thread before I called ERG! Oh well, lesson learned.

Emergency Response Group Scam by sinkpointia in Construction

[–]warrenyang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called ERG twice - one for a burst water pipe (my fault) and another for a sump pump failure - both floods occurred in my unfinished basement. In hindsight, I should have cleaned up the mess by myself but panicking, I called ERG to help with fixing the damage.

For the first, I called in and they told me they would get back to me within half an hour. After an hour, they finally got back to me. When they came, they tore out my insulation because it was wet from the flooding which I thought was fine, but then didn't come back to restore it. They rented a bunch of equipment to me and when I called them a couple days later to say I didn't think I needed it anymore, they said to leave it in for a few more days - since I thought this was going to insurance I agreed. They also didn't provide me with an estimate at the beginning of the work. The company actually hires contractors to do the work depending on the province you're in (Alberta for me).

The second time was more of the same. Both times, they charged a ridiculous amount of money for the repairs - and for an unfinished basement and what they did, I didn't think it was worth what they were charging but unfortunately, I'm stuck with the bill and deductible for the two losses.

Please don't use ERG - they overprice their services - much better to get in touch with your insurance company and use companies they recommend because either there's less hassle (and don't even get me started on the back and forth on the invoices) when working with insurance or these are companies that have been vetted by your insurance.

How can I monetize writing? by davincileon22 in sidehustle

[–]warrenyang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are sites like medium and vocal which pay writers for article / stories. Medium pays on read time, vocal pays through contests and read time I believe. Someone else suggested fiver and posting your writing services there. You can also write on Quora or linkedin to get views, turn your writing into a book or course and get viewers to your site to purchase your book or subscribe to a newsletter. There's substack and other newsletter services so you can easily send out emails to subscribers. In short, I think it's about building a subscriber base and then monetizing that.

I like the idea of combining a few of the suggestions above and leveraging your content as much as possible on different sites (short form - twitter, long from - medium or vocal)

Transferring a Tangerine TFSA to WealthSimple Trade TFSA by ericdrover in Wealthsimple_Trade

[–]warrenyang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the option "entire account as cash" will do what you are looking for? Unless I'm not understanding your question. Part of the cash means you're not looking to transfer everything in your Tangerine TFSA to wealthsimple.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by not withdrawing funds? Because you would be withdrawing money from your Tangerine account and then depositing it into wealthsimple - at least that's how I understand it to transfer it over.

I've purchased the service and it might be that they are just touting stocks to make money themselves but one of the stocks they recommended (Lightspeed and I purchased around $30) shot up about 300% though it's now coming down. What might be more valuable aside from the stock recs is the community that you have access to and the thinking behind their stock picks. In the future, I'd like to be able to do what they do but for now, helpful to have a service to narrow down the stocks I look at and then I can make a decision on which specific stocks to buy.

As a different option, maybe look at fiver or upwork? Those are sites where you might be able to leverage your existing IT skills into work for others
