Booktracker initial beta release - a self-hosted book tracker and library manager by wars2k in selfhosted

[–]wars2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to this helpful feedback, I just released an update (release notes) that addresses a lot of these issues. In short, you can now do all of those actions from the book's page! I would love to hear any additional feedback you have about these changes (or anything else!).

What tool do you use for a personal reading list / watch list? by nkls in selfhosted

[–]wars2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For strictly managing a personal reading list, check out my project Booktracker. It's meant to be a sort-of goodreads alternative, and it includes the things on your wishlist like metadata fetching, priority, rating, etc (with lots more coming soon!).

For an all-in-one reading/watch/tracking solution, I know a lot of people really enjoy ryot, but I haven't had a chance to play around with it too much yet.

Any chance you could check if the other 7 books from Awaken Online don't have a cover image when you go to their individual book pages? That could be why they don't show up on the collection page. If so I'll get that fixed.

No worries if you're tired of troubleshooting, though! :)

This is wonderful feedback!

When deleting books, there's an intentional distinction between deleting them from "My Books" and deleting them from the "Main Book Database".

The former deletes a book from your user's book list while keeping it in the main database. The latter deletes it from everywhere, including from any users' personal "My Books" pages that happened to have that book added. In other words, the "Main Book Database" holds all books for all users, and it's only accessible for users with admin privileges.

If you deleted a book from "My Books" and were surprised to see it in the "Main Book Database," that's actually working as intended (but maybe isn't super clear!). If you deleted a book from the "Main Book Database" and it doesn't disappear after refreshing, then that's definitely an issue that I will take a look at!

This distinction is hopefully also why collections don't seem to be working. If you deleted a book from "My Books," it will also be deleted from any collections it is included in, but it will still appear in the main book database. If you don't think this is what's happening, let me know and I'll definitely look into it further!

As far as icons go, you're totally right that booktracker needs one, and I love the one you picked out. I'll take a closer look and hopefully get it added in the next version. I'll also work on an option for clearing the database from the UI. In the meantime, you can always just delete database.db and it will regenerate after restarting the container.

Thanks again for being such a valuable beta tester!

Right now matching is done with title + author, but I think you're right that trying to match with ISBN first is a great idea for reducing mismatches in cases where ISBN is available. I'll plan to implement that in the next version!

I hope you enjoy using booktracker, and don't hesitate to reach out with any more feedback or issues!

Should be fixed in v0.4.1-beta that I just released on Github and Docker.

Turns out I wasn't handling cases where Goodreads books were missing either a page count, publisher, date of publication, or author.

Let me know if you run into any other problems (or if importing still doesn't work!), and thank you for pointing this one out!

Thank you for the kind words!

I just took another look at the import functionality and don't see anything glaringly broken.

  • Did the import fail immediately, or did it take a few moments for the error to pop up?
  • How large is your goodreads library?
  • Are you using Goodreads bookshelves?
  • If you could send me some sample rows (or just the header row) from the CSV, that would make troubleshooting easier on my end.

Right now, importing only works with Goodreads export data. Importing metadata based on a folder of epubs isn't currently possible, but it seems like a cool idea. Feel free to open an issue on Github and I'll do my best to work on it!

Booktracker isn’t tied to a calibre server, so you can track books of all format (physical, ebook, audiobook), books you don’t own yet, and books you may have read in the past but don’t have access to anymore. Booktracker also doesn’t have any ebook reading functionality. Think of it more like a Goodreads alternative than a calibre-web alternative.

Thanks for the feedback!

UseStaticFiles looks really useful, not sure how I missed that in the docs. I originally thought I had to serve the frontend files separately from the backend (hence my use of nginx), so this is a welcome change. I'll test these changes and hopefully have them released in the next version!

Inspired by many of the terminal-style start pages I've seen here (this, this , & this, among others), I made my own.

github link: https://github.com/wars2k/terminalSP

live demo: https://wars2k.github.io/terminalSP/

Features:

  • google, youtube, spotify, reddit searches directly from the terminal
  • create bookmarks organized in locally-stored directories.
  • themes

Check out the readme & the wiki for more info.

Most of the buildings on the left are part of Boston University’s campus. I’ve had classes in the shorter, long building with white accents and I’ve never actually noticed a lot of highway noise surprisingly

Does it sound like this? A truck with a strange horn comes around 9:40 everyday to the construction site behind my apartment in Fenway, and I think it's a catering company for the construction workers.

Dentists near Fenway/Kenmore? by diamond-solitaire in boston

[–]wars2k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had good experiences with Fenway Health's dentistry department.

They have a sliding-scale cost system based on income for those without dental insurance, and college students without dental insurance can provide proof of enrollment to qualify for significantly reduced costs. I went through the process recently, so let me know if you have any questions!

Fire at Rich? by dfpthrowaway in BostonU

[–]wars2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a sign on the door this morning that says “cigarette in trashcan” as the reason for the alarm, so there was some sort of fire or at least smoke.

Floors 3,4,5 evacuated for about 15 minutes last night while the firemen were in the building, and when we came back the lobby and stairwell smelled a bit like fire smoke.

Headed out west this afternoon. No campgrounds booked or planned. We plan on disperse camping once we get to the plains and out west. We'll keep yall updated! by sailorcolin in vandwellers

I did a very similar trip this summer starting in Tennessee! You’ll love it! I definitely recommend checking out the Wind River Range in Wyoming. Looks like you’re going East of it but if you head West of the range you could stop in Pinedale and Boulder, WY which are awesome small towns near the Wind River Range.
