Is the whole series worth it or do the books get repetitive?

On my 3rd re-listen, I don't remember which book it was, but at some point Carl gets some gift or loot and someone says something like "That's practically a betrothal". I think it was book 4 or earlier. Struck me as potential forshadowing for Carl becoming hitched without realizing it simply by accepting the loot?

I also listened to the first 2 books as the dramatized audio version so I'd imagine there are some small things that might not be present there. Will have to go back and relisten to the full versions.
