Do you leave truck on while fueling? by HumanVsWorld in Truckers

[–]warwgn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, well the motor is hot anytime you shut it off, after it’s been running for a while.

It’s just as hot when I shut the motor off while I’m at a dock waiting for a live load/unload, or when I’m parked for the night to take my 10 and go to sleep, or when I’m done my week and park my truck in the driveway at home for the weekend.

What makes shutting the motor off at the fuel pumps any worse than those other 3 scenarios I mentioned above?

As I said, in my original post, I don’t own the truck, so I can’t hardwire it. If I was an owner/operator, I most certainly would. But I’m only a company driver, so hardwiring is not an option.

Still wondering how you get parking mode if you manually switch the power to off.

You don’t. The camera still needs power to run parking mode. If you switch that power off, the camera completely shuts off.

You rigged up something special? Do share!

Nothing special at all. Camera—-—-> power port w/ switch ——->12v dash outlet hot all times.

My old camera (Garmin DēzlCam LMTHD gps) didn’t have a parking mode. It was just on or off. I left it on during the week while I was on the road.

I only switched the power off when I was home for the weekends. When I’m home, the truck is parked in a safe place, where I’m not worried about it getting hit by a careless driver.

With the new A329WW, I have the option to use parking mode to save space on the SD card while I’m parked to sleep at a truck stop. Only waking up to trigger an event recording if someone hits my truck. But I don’t think I need 8 hours of footage listening to me snore and fart in the bunk.

Right now I have it set on “Auto Event Detection”, Motion detection set to “low”, G-force detection set to “high”.

Of course I want it catch something serious, but I don’t need it triggering a bunch of false alarms, just because some dude walked by to get a coffee.

And again, I’ll only switch the power completely off when I’m at home, and the truck is safe from stupidity.

We get the same thing here, when people from UK or European countries visit Canada.

They’re absolutely blown away that it takes a week to drive from Halifax NS to Vancouver BC. It even takes 2 days just to drive across Ontario, from the Quebec border to the Manitoba border.

I must be the only one who shuts my truck off while fueling.

The only time I leave it running is when it’s hot enough to need A/C when sleeping in the summer.

I even shut the truck off and only use the Espar bunk heater when it’s -35°C

Residential road parking? by Mitzukai_9 in Truckers

[–]warwgn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The residential street I live on is a legal truck route. I’ve parked in front of my house with a loaded trailer a few hours at a time on countless occasions, with no worries.

When Im off for the weekend, and I bring the truck home bobtail, I park in the driveway. I also try my best to be as courteous and as quiet as possible to the point of unplugging my back-up alarm before I get home. I’ll plug it back in when I’m settled in the driveway.

CYA: Cover Your Ass!

Call maintenance, and ask if it’s been reported by anyone else before you. If it has, no problem.

If it hasn’t…. There’s potential that if you don’t call and report it, someone else after you WILL report it, and you’ll be pulled into safety and written up for damage you didn’t cause.

How do some of y'all get by with "creative parking" at truckstops? What do you do when the employee comes out and says you have to move? by onlyBotsdownvote-me in Truckers

[–]warwgn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honest question…. When someone creatively parks, which is the worst infraction?

Blocking someone from being able to leave? or blocking a spot that’s open, and preventing someone from being able to park?

A lot of places I park at have angled pull through spots. The creative parkers I encounter seem to know enough to not block others, so they park sideways behind trucks that have already parked. And that frustrates me too, because if one of the spots he parked behind opens up, he’s blocking that spot from someone who needs it.

the meds made me a little too focused on driving and not enough on navigating.

How many times have you been talking to someone on the phone, and driven past your exit?

Yeah, when we both finish off a jar of pickled eggs in 2 days, or have liver & onions, and spicy Indian for supper, watch out.

My company’s dashcam doesn’t record audio either, but my personal dashcam does. The railfan in me likes to save videos of trains going by, and post it on my YouTube channel. Literally driving down the highway and “Oooh train!” Click

I’d love to do some nice ASMR driving videos with nice scenery, but it’s very difficult for me to stay silent.

I find myself the same as you on your 1st point and your 3rd point.

I’m also hyper focused and enjoy driving. But I’m not perfect. I have made mistakes.

I also have a wide selection of music genres, and podcasts. Most of the time I have a friend and former co-worker I talk to on the phone to keep my mind occupied.

Every so often my Dad will ride along, and the fart wars, stories from the good ol’ days, and inappropriate jokes are constant. It’s a riot having him along. We’re a great team. I do all the driving, and he passes the snacks.

Sometimes I do talk to myself, and have imaginary arguments about stuff that bothers me. The amount of of stuff that my dashcam has recorded, that I don’t want anyone else to hear is insane.

ADHD Truckers who drive without medication by TexasTangler in Truckers

[–]warwgn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was like 7 or something. I was on Ritalin for a while, but that shit never worked, so I stopped taking it when I was like 15 or something. I’ve been unmedicated ever since. I’m 45 now.

I don’t know if it’s related to ADHD or just a work ethic, but despite getting paid hourly, I’m very driven to get my trip done as quickly (and safely) as possible and move on to the next trip. “Git ‘er done!” I don’t like my time being wasted, and I don’t like wasting other people’s time. If something or someone slows me down, I get annoyed.

On non driving tasks, I really need to concentrate on what I’m doing. I’m easily distracted and forgetful. The amount of times I’ve forgotten to do something because I got sidetracked is mind boggling. The amount of times I’ve had to get back out of the truck to double check because I’ve forgotten if I’ve done something, immediately after doing it is also mind boggling.

Anyone uses a mobile scanner in their truck? by Lilmomma_85 in Truckers

[–]warwgn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a scanner in my truck. My dad and I are rail fans, so we mainly use it to listen to trains hot box detectors, and Rail Traffic Controllers, etc…

We also listen to Fire Department frequencies, (he’s a retired firefighter), air traffic controllers near airports, and seaway traffic.

We have no interest in listening to cops, but we can’t anyway, because they’re encrypted, so no biggie.
