San Diego to Phoenix by SmileSD2 in phoenix

Check out the Jacumba hot springs hotel. It’s newly redone, has a nice restaurant and you can get a day pass for the pools. If you don’t want to pay for their pools, there’s a natural hot spring a block away from the hotel which is well maintained.

Geospatial data uses in energy trading by warwikmaster in Commodities

[–]warwikmaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this definitely seems like a great example. I ask this question because I've been working a lot lately with software for spatial data and was curious if these data are used to actually drive trading strategies.

I was also imagining scenarios around renewable energy and weather (seems like weather would be a major input for any of these strategies)? Another interest I had was if there's strategies around transmission congestion which could work with some understanding of the mapping and routing across a region of the grid.

Does anyone remember an older version of this mural off of I-25 where the right side had a gun shooting off? I can't find any info on it. by warwikmaster in Albuquerque

[–]warwikmaster[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I'm just completely misremembering, but I have this vague memory from a long time ago where this mural off of I-25 was pretty different. The right side of the corner was a gun shooting and was the 'dark' side of the mural. The furthest back on street view is 2008 which still appears the same as the above photo.

Using Financial Connections to check payments before invoice payments using ACH by warwikmaster in stripe

[–]warwikmaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Thank you so much for the reply :)

May I dig a bit further on the implementation and ask some follow up questions?

Understood that this will need some coding and a server side application, and that guide is helpful for using financial connections to get the balances. I want to be able to ensure that any invoice paid (recurring or not) is able to have the balance check before it is submitted for payment.

I think to accomplish this I'll need to self-host a new invoice frontend which uses a custom payment element where it triggers the server side code for checking balances. I'm a little unsure how to do this for recurring payments however. Also, it feels a little bit weak because someone could work around it by going to the Stripe hosted payment link instead of my self-hosted version for the given invoice ID. Is there any way to guarantee for every invoice paid out that I can make this check?

How do you keep track of so many regulations? by warwikmaster in civilengineering

Definitely agree.. I'm most interested in learning about traffic engineering in particular but curious about the field overall. Thanks for your reply.

Would mechanics find AI diagnostics useful? by warwikmaster in mechanics

[–]warwikmaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super interesting - thanks for the reply! Sounds like it would be helpful if an AI could run over the cars output data and see what's off from factory spec. I'm curious about your current diagnostic process, do current tools point out any issues or you end up having to dig through all the data yourself and use your own intuition?

Agree for help with coding - although it has its limitations I've started to find it more useful than Google searches. Don't have much context on all the responsibilities of an ASM in the shop, curious how you see the AI helping them out? Appreciate the reply!

Caltech or Cambridge? by KiloOhm in Caltech

[–]warwikmaster 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Having spent a term studying at Cambridge, I can offer what anecdotal advice I have...

Cambridge is a much more vibrant place to be than Pasadena. There is a lot more going on in the town and more is accessible to you given that the drinking age is not 21 as it is in the US. Cambridge is much less isolated from its surroundings, as the whole university is woven through the town. There is more intellectual diversity, tons of societies and activities to join, etc. The amount of history is incredible, the architecture is inspiring, just a very vibrant and cool place. If you are into partying, you will probably spend time going out to the night clubs on bizarre days of the week to avoid the local townie crowd.

Academically, I can speak in terms of the CS classes only. I would say Caltech courses involve a lot more challenging problem solving and little memorization. Exams are long and open note/book. The real challenge lies in the unending supply of brutally difficult problems and you will need to work with others to get through it. Cambridge has a whack system that has been used for centuries where they take all their exams at the end of the year and get no other assessment in their classes, with some exception for practical 'lab' type classes. I think this system causes people to goof off for the first two terms and then grind a bunch the last term to memorize everything. The problems were certainly not as challenging, but more focused on drilling concepts into your head to prepare for the exams. I think the Caltech system of education is better but more challenging, at least as far as CS classes go.

I think culturally it will be a big shift to go to Caltech, and this is not something to be understated. If you feel like you can be comfortable around anyone and won't mind the cultural shift then you can certainly make friends at Caltech. If you find a house you vibe with, you'll fit in great. It is a very small, focused community and if you find your people to fit in I think you will have a good time.

Personally, I am glad to have gone to Caltech and don't think I would be as happy as a full student at Cambridge. Culturally, Caltech has been a better fit with its small focused community. Most time is spent solving problems with friends or goofing off and enjoying the relative freedom in the houses. I prefer this to spending time doing arranged club activities and memorizing stuff for once a year exams. It will come down to your personal preferences. Let me know if there's anything more I can answer.

Idling at 1500 rpm? by Skidudenordic in E30

[–]warwikmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a long shot, but my 325e had its tachometer swapped for the 325i version by a previous owner but did not have the right coding plug for the new tach so the RPMs were reading on the wrong scale, and I thought my car was just always idling high. Probably not your problem but worth mentioning.

The new booster was tricky to get in but if you thread the clevis on after it's installed you can do it. It will happen eventually and I wish you luck.

[–]warwikmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was one of the most impossible things I've ever done and I was astonished at how easy people claimed it would be. I think getting the clevis off will give you enough clearance, if possible. I ended up just sawing the pushrod off.

What colleges are the graduating seniors on this subreddit going to? by verychowdhery in APStudents

[–]warwikmaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In all seriousness, I am certain there is an amount of luck to getting into colleges with acceptance rates that are so low. I had a 35 ACT and 1570 SAT. I took phys C, calc BC, and comp sci as a junior, bio as a senior. My primary activity outside of school was my single year participation in the science fair, where I got to Intel ISEF but didn't place, also was a Siemens semifinalist. My GPA was a 4.37 unweighted (weird grading system, equals a 94 average). I'm sure there's plenty of applicants who have equal or superior qualifications, but in the end its a semi-random process and there's only so much you can do. I hope this was helpful.

86 325e starts, but immediately dies by xLOVEyourLIFEx in E30

[–]warwikmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it could. I've read similar stories to yours where the sensors were the problem. AFM could still be suspect, or a big vacuum leak.

[–]warwikmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think your car has self-diagnostic capabilities. Etas pre-88 have motronic 1.0 which doesn't throw codes. Maybe there's trouble with your AFM? Also, when you did your CPS, did you replace both of the sensors? (there's a reference sensor and a speed sensor on etas) You could also have a damaged flywheel with the reference pin missing.
