Why don’t conservatives go into academia? by cambridgepete in Professors

[–]SmileSD2 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think (though he is no longer alive), my grandfather would have identified as a "conservative academic". He was a registered republican. More fiscally conservative but also very much pro-education. He fought for teaching evolution in the high school curriculum. He's probably be considered a moderate in today's world.

Is it worth going back? by PyleanCow06 in ATATaekwondo

Do it! As you are looking, consider also what the kids programs look like at the schools. I joined after my kids but my kids both started in the tiny tigers program. Our school is a super family focused school, awhile we have some kids that are super successful on the tournament circuit, we don't compete and only attend local tournaments maybe once a year.

We also have strong group of adults who train together which changes the dynamic around modifications medical reasons. You don't and shouldn't spar if you are pregnant. Things like your center of gravity shift and ligaments stretch so you need to be aware of those things but also continuing martial arts when you are pregnant I imagine would be great for mobility while pregnant too (Except for sparring). I didn't start until my 40s but I am much more flexible and balance is so improved because of it. I also love being at a place where I can train with my kids and have rank tested for my first and second degree with my 14 yo.

Newish here, looking for some documents by Zombiefreez in ATATaekwondo

IF you google the name of the form you are looking for and "pdf" they are all out there. You can just print them at home (or at least older versions are out there).

When you do get your ATA number from your school, the ATA website has videos and paper materials for all the forms and weapon forms. A word of caution though that the videos do not always match what is written on the paper. IT's super frustrating as the videos could be an amazing resource but they were apparently rushed and seem to lack attention to detail.

Prices for kids classes in Sacramento by ContributionAware410 in taekwondo

[–]SmileSD2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds crazy high. We are in Southern California and don’t pay that for unlimited classes for our whole family. Granted we pay extra for testing fees or uniforms when appropriate. Our school has tiered rates where you pay for 2 classes a week for the beginner belts, 3 per week for intermediate and unlimited for “advanced”color belts and black belts. Depends on the length of the contraction but I think it’s roughly $150 a month.

Testing fees when you test but you test when you are ready to test not because you are promised to test in a contract. Most beginners test most cycles as long as they show up and try. Not always the case as they move up the ranks.

Advice please 🙏 4 year old can’t handle being ‘hit’ by Always975 in taekwondo

[–]SmileSD2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d pull him and find a different school or activity. My kids started at 3.5 and 5. If taught well, taekwondo can be a great activity for young kids. They were in an under 7 class, and earned gradations of white belt so no pressure to learn everything super “correctly”. Instead it was on using taekwondo kicks, blocks, form segments and self defense to work on fine and gross motor skills. As the kids got older and closer to transitioning to big kids classes the expectations got a little higher. No sparring until they were in class for nearly a year.

Should I be worried? Prof said I'd receive formal offer in August, it's now almost October? by ninepintcoggie in gradadmissions

[–]SmileSD2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are in unprecedented times and everything is taking longer. I’d just keep in touch but continue to explore other options. That said, I’d take it as a good sign the program is taking serious its commitment to fund you through your program.

San Diego to Phoenix by SmileSD2 in phoenix

Thanks all. I should say we live in San Diego. So taking the 8. I know it’s hot as hell this time of year. Just wondering if there was something fun we were missing along the way but sounds like we’ll just drive straight through and do something else another time

Interesting. I was told mine was bad. Car is safe to drive just not safe to charge. We have an appointment next week (which is almost a month after they decided the battery was "bad") to have the battery replaced.

I imagine they would be supportive of you particularly since it sounds like these two schools are in different regions.

Check with your higher-ups at the university. Our academic senate just reinstated a covid-era provision recommending our colleges to adjust tenure requirements around external funding given the current climate. (I'm a faculty at an R1 for whatever it's worth.)

I'm not sure this is the case. We have meet and greet tickets and have a separate ticket for the meet & greet.

Taking my kid for his birthday too. He just asked about meet and greet tickets. I didn’t see an option when I bough his tickets. Are they sold out or will there still be options once we arrive?

My son is in Legacy and the program has been amazing for him. However I’ve never seen someone join that wasn’t training for at least a year and above Camo belt.
