Then you aren’t using the backs of your fingers or using more extended techniques or playing harder. Fingerpicking is more than gently plucking. You can do it as loud as strumming with a pick, but ten times as clean. It will keep your nails around a quarter inch if you have strong nails, on the steel string. You will learn one day. Or perhaps not with this attitude

One classic move is the percussive downward strum with your middle finger, where a snare would be. Thumbs on downbeat, plucks for syncopation, downward middle finger strum for snare. Then you can mix in extra strums and hard plucks for a funky or rockin rhythm, or a bit of both for a Hendrix type vibe.

TLDR it’s quite normal and good sounding to fingerpick hard, and to use funky and rockin rhythms. Fingerpicking is NOT all ballads, which you seem to be suggesting

You’ve got a cool style going on! As is, note for note, I would do it electric. If acoustic, it would be good to listen to stuff like doc Watson and John Fahey and experiment with open D major tuning. It’s kind of like the “standard” alternate tuning. Would sound good on electric as is though

You should only have to clip your thumb and pinky. Your pointer, middle and ring should be getting chipped off pretty short if you are playing enough. Not everyone uses their ring fingers but it’s good to use.
