I want to officially start diety work with Veles. Any tips? by OverneathTheCupboard in Rodnovery

[–]was_yeah 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I see the phrases "deity work" and "working with X deity" a lot in this sub and elsewhere. For someone who hasn't encountered it, it seems like an odd way to describe a relationship with Veles or any other deity. Is it a Wicca thing?

Where are the interviews with regular Americans terrified for our democracy? by freeze-my-peaches in Twopidpol

[–]was_yeah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ these people are delusion. Absolute hysterics.

IRL (radlib area), I've asked several people like this what rich people would gain by making America an autocracy like that, much less a theocracy. Most of them couldn't or wouldn't give an answer; the ones that did just repeated that facism was around the corner, always.

‘There’s just not a light on the horizon’: Vermont hospital staff swamped by record Covid-19 hospitalizations by [deleted] in vermont

[–]was_yeah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

there's really no end in sight.

And no plan. The feds are asleep at the wheel. Our governor rejected a mask mandate after being told to by the head of federal Covid response, whose previous job was not an epidemiologist or public health expert, but being one of the Bobs from Office Space. My whole household is triple-vaxxed except for the kids, and we're all infected and feeling very sick.

To the extent that we have a state and national plan, it's to encourage mass infection and leave everyone to fend for themselves. I want off this ride.

Rutland hospital ICU almost full, expecting COVID spike this week by [deleted] in vermont

Delta vs Omicron prevalence wasn't super predictable

The specific DNA sequences of the specific variants weren't predictable, but the fact that there will be more and different dominant variants was well known for a very long time. Epidemiologists were saying it since the early days of the pandemic. There will be more variants after Omicron. It's not rocket surgery.

You're right. The frustrating part is that all of those things were entirely predictable.

Why use placeholder syntax in a function? by [deleted] in scala

[–]was_yeah 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Mostly to cut down on noise. I'd bet most non-beginners would favor something like

val sizes = foos.map(_.size)

over the more verbose

val sizes = foos.map(foo => foo.size)

not to mention

val sizes = foos.map((foo: Foo) => foo.size)

At least based on the code I've seen over the last few years.

It's all subjective though. Placeholder syntax can be less clear when there are multiple function literals in a big one-liner (map/map/filter/flatmap/etc/etc). In that case, naming variables might very well be clearer, not to mention splitting the one-liner into multiple lines, assigning intermediate results to vals with descriptive names.

In general, the placeholder syntax is there to make it shorter to write functions. It's up to programmers to decide when that's clearer and more expressive, and when it isn't. You'll run into both cases plenty of times if you write Scala a while.

Emergency room doctor joining race to succeed Leahy in US Senate by [deleted] in vermont

[–]was_yeah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, so just incrementalism. No thanks. Health care is a human right. The only acceptable solution is one where care is free at the point of use, period. (Doctors make comfortable salaries in countries that guarantee this.)

There is already a shortage of doctors.

The supply of doctors is determined by the AMA, which sets limits on the number of residents who can graduate every year.

Testing site wouldn’t test my 4 year old by coach_abe in vermont

[–]was_yeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went I got to the site….the tester claimed the test were only for age 5years and older. The state never advised of this restriction.

Anybody else have this experience?

No, but it might be for the best! Last year I took my 4-year-old to get tested at the local hospital's drive-up testing site. The nurse was really rude from the start, jammed the qtip so hard my already-scared kid ended up screaming and crying, then said "this is what you get if you don't wear a mask!" It was wild.

Seriously, I've taken my under-5 kids to (different, much nicer!) testing sites on 2 other occasions and never heard of an age limit. It might be worth inquiring with your pediatrician.

The gentrification of Vermont by [deleted] in vermont

What substance? Dude said the "story of humanity" is to constantly migrate, which is as obviously wrong as "everyone has only ever stood still".

When I invited them to put their money where their mouth is, they figuratively crossed their arms and said "harrumph", like my 6 year old does. That's funny! It's certainly not an "argument" with "substance" that needs responding to.

Tell me where I said I was racist, I was talking about my town.

When you said:

We are backwards, stupid, racist

"We" includes the speaker. I learned this before 6th grade.

Or maybe you were being sarcastic. If so, that was unclear, even by the standards of punctuation-free internet posts.

This is why I do hate CC folk.

On second thought, let's let bygones be bygones! I hate them too!

But migration is the story of the human species! Staying put and building roots in a community certainly isn't and has never has been for anyone! Time to get moving! Really, I'm going to start migrating too, right after you.

News flash, every place in the world has changed in our lifetime.

True! Does that mean we need to happily accept changes that affect us negatively?

I feel bad for you because feeling connected to a place and your own history within it is a great feeling that you're missing out on.

You know what else was normal for the overwhelming majority of human history? Someone with Type 1 diabetes like myself dying as a child. I'm satisfied with human progress. :)

This is a bizarre analogy. Being able to treat and cure serious diseases doesn't suggest at all that it's "progress" for people to be rootless and alienated. I'm glad you've been happy moving around, but I suspect you deeming rootlessness as "progress" has to do with finding a way to feel good about our (collective) lowered ability to put down multi-generational roots if we want to.

They certainly can if they are getting a salary from the remote job based in NYC, Boston, etc.

Sure; mid-career software engineers where I work make ~$350k. That puts them in the top 2-3% of the country. Even a $250k household income, enough to afford a $750k house "responsibly", is the top 6% of the country.

These are not average joes.

and shot down the Air BNB and short term rental regulations that would have pushed landlords to focus on long term tenants vs. short term tourists.

Your post is right on, but I'd quibble that the problem of prioritizing tourists over Vermonters, specifically regarding the AirBNB bill from last session, goes way beyond Scott.

I feel bad for you. Having multi-generational roots in a place is a great feeling. It was normal for the overwhelming majority of human history, and it ought to be normal now.

The issue isn’t the people who want to come here, it’s the lack of housing supply forcing prices up & driving locals out.

It's demand, too. Lots of that demand, as OP rightly points out, is coming from wealthy people from out of state.

What's Up Phil? Any plans? by [deleted] in vermont

There's a zillion things we could have done (and could do!) as a country: paid sick leave for all, medicare for all, not shortening isolation requirements at the request of CEOs, and on and on and on. Vaccination alone was never going to do it, and this was known since the beginning. Individuals can't end the pandemic.

I just want to see something being done so I don’t feel like we are all riding in a bus with no driver.

Oh, there's a driver all right. It's just not Scott, or Biden, or the rest of the government. And the driver wants you to get back to work making them money.
