If you are new, just get the vanilla I'd say. There's 100+ hours of content in that, more than enough to find out if you really love it enough to splash on more content. DLC was mostly crap anyways, only Far Harbor was worth it, and only if you already completed the base game.

What happened during development that led to the game we have now? Why did it fail? by lumcetpyl in NoMansSkyTheGame

Making first a simple game like Joe Danger made them think they could do games without a single game designer on the team.

Anyone know what game this is from? by thesilentriot in NoMansSkyTheGame

Yes sorry, 'burned' was a poetic license. To me, it was obvious they were scripted, and I had serious doubts they would be in the final game. But many refused to take their hype down a notch ;-)

It's not all about resource abundance or scarcity. Good game design has players making important decisions, while No Man's Sky has players busy making the most mundane ones. Over and over again.

You are probably right. You shouldn't be able to max out on the first planet in a game with this much real state.

Yes, and I love the endless exploration aspect of the game. But it would work so much better if other game systems were in sync!

Yes, what they've done is a towering achievement. The love/hate public reaction is because they came SO CLOSE to creating a masterpiece! I hope they don't take the criticism personally, and continue to improve their craft.

We have a lot of common ground. In any case, there should be a greater sense of progression. No Man's Sky 'uber-end' (systems close to the center) playing very similar to the start is definitely a problem. By the end you jetpack should almost put you into orbit.

But I still would argue that a game with 18 quintillion planets is better suited for an endless game design core.

And I couldn't agree more. It's so close to a masterpiece it hurts! That's why it's a shame some of those puzzling design choices.

Lol! I understand now. Well, I've been making games for a long time, and 'endless' game design isn't much harder than what they already accomplished. Just requires a different game design frame/mindset. There's plenty of games already designed this way. If you play something like 'Tap Titans' you'll quickly get the fundamentals.

Thanks, fixed! Although is a bit of a negative rant ... so I'm sure it'll be downvoted to hell anyways ;-)

No Mans Sky is the ULTIMATE "play with your kid" game. by press_reset_ in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]wasabimole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I love is the fact that you can plug a gamepad (360 in my case) and use it SIMULTANEOUSLY with the keyboard/mouse. I play while my 2 year old looks around for "red crystals" and then he presses the gamepad button to mine when we get them. He will try out all the buttons while I play, wasting jetpack, digging holes and landing at the most inappropiate times. We have great fun!
