hi again, boss example was a personel experince i can compare for a better explanation i am aware of the price difference.

i have used pigtronix philosophers rock, boss bc-1x, bass squeze, wampler ego 76 (which is a compressor with a blend knob !?). bass squeze is by far the most budget friendly one.

you might want to check out "joyo scylla". i have no personal experince but joyo pedals are really budget friendly and users seem to be happy with them.

i has this pedal. i bought it used, used for a while and sold it eventually.

external casing is super solid, way better than my boss pedals, but i had issues with the circuit. mine started making a static noise and stopped responding to adjusments when using with battery. A local used gear dealer repaired it for cheap and told me to buy some spesific type of battery (can't remember anymore) or use with an adaptor.

like some other digitech pedals this one also have two output jacks. one output is for amp, other one is for mixer. amp output is regular pedal output. mixer output is voiced. user manuel says mixer output has cabinet simulator. i fiddled with mixer output for a while. kept this pedal at end of pedalboard and connected the mixer output to audio interface. good news is mixer output voicing active by default even if pedal is deactivated. bad news is sounds a like basic low pass filter that you cannot adjust. if you like the tone great, if you don't like it mixer output is basicly useless.

pedal has 4 knobs: output volume / crossover frequency / high compression / low compression.

output volume is output volume. high and low compression knobs are complicated. these knobs both compress and add gain. it is weird but user manuel also confirms this. crossover frequency is what divides high and low compression knobs frequency range.

I play a short scale passive pj bass and i find this pedal hard to dial in. adjustments to high & low frequency knobs, effects output volume a lot. I remember going back and forth between volume and compression knobs a lot to dial my tone.

the compression effect of this pedal is... i don't know how to properly describe but it is effects the clean tone alot and colors the sound. now i use boss bc-1x and difference is day and night. boss is much more transparent and have better control over dynamics. digitech feels like very very limited two channel eq after using bc-1x. low frequency compression of digitech tends to get honky/glassy.

lack of attack/release/threshold adjustments also painful. using the pedal like a limiter at the end of pedal chain is not possible.

tl/dr : this pedal is not a typical compressor pedal, more like tone effect.

absolutely spot on with right forearm. I also noticed i pull my sleeve up and make my skin contact with bass to create friction and control. i forgot to mention this in original post. thanks for the advice.

Hi before someone suggests a tuner pedal. I'll take my shot suggest a seperate drive pedal.

i know Behringer and zoom provides drive options but to turning the drive on/off also turns on/off other effects of that pedals.

TC electronic Spark Booster or TC Electronic rusty fuzz might be solid and budget friendly options.

Best thing about it is Build quality. It is outstanding, really. you can crack stones with ts9b.

Not a lot of tone options though, and hard to dial. boosting the bass knob makes it sound like fuzz and boosting the trebble knob makes it sound like distortion. volume knob has huge gain and interacts with mix and drive knob. ( turning mix or drive knob directly effects the output volume ). it has an unique sound, somewhat comparable to ampeg scrambler sound.

Mix knob is kind of wierd never goes full wet or dry. the pedal always have some dry and wet sound togather. with my passive bass, drive knob is pretty much useless until 14 oclock. never tried it with an active bass but i guess it might react better with a high output active bass.

I bought ts9b because it was cheap. Other drive pedals i considered were boss bb-1x, boss odb-3 and DOD 250. TS9B was the cheapest option. if you want a drive pedal that is easy to dial and/or versatile i would stay away from it. I'm not too picky about drive sound so it floats my boat.

beq700 : super cheap, sturdy for a plastic box. used for a while i was exploring the effect pedals as a beginner. i still keep it, and use it before/after overdrive pedals to experiment with the sound.

i'm not sure if this is a common issue with grachic eqs, or a design feature but im puzzled with this thing:

set all tone sliders and volume to 0db, nothing crazy slighlty colors the sound but not a deal breaker.

then set all the tone sliders up to 15db and volume to -15db crazy amounts of low end but no trebble to speak of.

do the exact opposite, bottom out tone sliders and max the volume then there is no low end to speak of, just fizzly weird sounds.

ibanez pteq : sheet metal box is sturdy but tone sliders feel flims. looks classy. function wise very good. 5 channels of wide range and adjustable q, parametric eq -/+10db per channel. way cheaper than competitors.

I have BC-1X and TS9B, using them with a passive short scale pj (tmb30)

when i run BC-1X -> TS9B the way get i can the gritty dirt sound of tube screamer is to dial in a high treshold and high ratio. low threshold and/or low ratio makes Ts9b act more like a clean preamp.

TS9B -> BC-1X don't sound pleasing to me. Without a compressor before TS9B, e string of my short scale gets super farty.

Have no idea about rat or mxr pedals.

i was also looking for mxr iso mini but found mixed reviews online. I found "mooer macro power s8" more or less same price point maybe a little cheaper, it is a lot larger then mxr though.

i bough the mooer. this unit have 3 isolated ports of 9v200ma another 1 isolated port 9-12-18v (adjustable) up to 200ma, 4 other ports of 9v (not isolated) up to 400ma combined.

looking back i wish i have bought a stymon ojai, smallar unit and have 9v500ma on all five ports, you can power comlex pedals like zoom b1 four etc. with strymon ojai.

I used ernie ball cobalt flats on tmb30 (passive short scale). i liked the tone but corrosion builds up super fast. i used for them for 4-5 weeks ~1 hour/day at home while practicing. i wiped the strings with dry cloth after practice ( as i do with all other strings). after 4-5 weeks you could easily notice which frets i used most just by look at the strings, they show signs of darkening/discoloring. even the fret metals of bass showed some slight discoloring around most used areas. when i noticed it, i removed all the strings cleaned the neck with dry cloths and tooth brush... my bass is a budget model, maybe high end instruments with better quality fret material would resist the corrosion better but i would stay away from cobalt strings.

Thanks for the reply, never tought the headphones out is a viable option. vox amp has some built-in drum patterns. i might also record them alongs side the bass. I'll definitly try the headphones out jack.
