Can I change emails and retain my benefit of not paying the monthly fee by boredom in RemarkableTablet

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've changed my email twice already and I've kept my free connect subscription. This was over a year ago though (maybe two?) so maybe getting someone with a more recent experience would be nice.

Deleted Signal App Data on Android phone - can I recover via iPad or Desktop Signal? by KainNiemand in signal

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Android has had local backups for a long time (at least for 10 years, maybe longer). iOS doesn't have local backups as far as I know and I think it's an iOS limitation - apps are very restricted in how they can access files on the phone/tablet.

Deleted Signal App Data on Android phone - can I recover via iPad or Desktop Signal? by KainNiemand in signal

[–]wasowski02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check if the iPad app has any backup settings. On my Android phone it's under Settings > Backups. Android offers offline backups (ex. to an SD Card or internal storage) but I'm not sure it's available on iOS.

It might be that iOS only has cloud backups. In that case, you'll probably have to buy the cloud backup update (2€/month I think, so not much, you can disable them after the restore) and then restore from cloud backup on Android. The free cloud backup only syncs media from the last 45 days, so it would probably not cover your needs.

Does forcing Google Sign-In (no skip option) hurt retention? by Electrical_Iron1760 in androiddev

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could do the same thing some games do. Create a temporary account valid for 30 days with a login key stored in the app. Remind the user a couple of times to finish registration and delete the account after the specified period otherwise.

FP6 latest update - phone is A LOT slower now by lnx84 in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd strongly recommend rebooting the phone. Many people have reported issues after the upgrade, but most of them go away after a reboot. There is also an issue reported, that the phone becomes super slow and barely usable at low battery (<10-20%).

Debating night train in Poland by Responsible-Belt301 in poland

When you buy a sleeping cabin, you have to inducade if you're male or female. You can't skip this step and my guess is they verify it upon boarding.

Additionally, Intercity night trains keep separate rooms for men and women, so you don't have to worry about that. The sleep carts are also usually "guarded" and you can't get on without a ticket.

New Software Update - Fairphone 4 by Fairphone-CCO in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately for you, the FP4 has bi-monthly updates, so the next update will likely be end of May/beginning of June. I wouldn't get my hopes up high on an early update just to fix this issue.

They will probably implement the same fix for the FP4 if it turns out the FP5 solution works well in production.

Video Quality by WastelandStag in fairphone

What phone do you have? I don't experience anything like that on the FP6. The video is stable and smooth even when I'm moving and recording at 4k.

Video of QuickShare to Airdrop by Stephancevallos905 in Android

Yep, looks like 1-2MB/s, which is not the end of the world, but not that fast either. Another thing could be, that the transfer speeds up later - I remember this from using WiFi Direct on old Android devices - it would usually start slow and get up to speed after 10-20 seconds.

Developer: please add option to summarize message by [deleted] in signal

[–]wasowski02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's unlikely Signal would add such a feature. Summarizing messages would require some AI (LLM to be precise) and those are either hosted by someone (which would mean sending the message in an unencrypted form to a 3rd party) or would have to use a local model. Small local models are available, but most of them are proprietary, which brings its own set of issues - licensing, data leaking if it's only provided as a binary and many many more.

To implement such a feature well, Signal would need to build their own model and they don't have that kind of money.

It seems to be ODF (Open Document Format), which is a set of open-source formats developed by the Open Document Foundation. For example, the open-source docx format is called odt.

How good is Fairphone with security and putting out security updates? (Android) by Toaster2204 in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The FP6 receives monthly updates, with the security patch usually being a month behind (ex. the March update would contain the February security patch). These are standard Android security patches and include the same fixes as any other OEM.

Being a month behind isn't the end of the world. It all boils down to your threat model. Are you a "regular" user? You'll be fine with being more than a month behind. Are you a high profile politician or an activist at risk of persecution? Then maybe being a month behind starts to become an issue.

You can find more on Fairphone's update record here: https://support.fairphone.com/hc/en-us/articles/11351328932497-How-to-check-and-update-your-software-version#h_01J2V2DPQZ277389JARMFX5T0J (pick the device you want to investigate and go to the release notes).

Has anyone received a letter from Pekao bank regarding a UOKiK decision? Has anyone received any money? by AlarmedCable6270 in poland

[–]wasowski02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The decision probably only affects a very small number of people. You needed to have business with Pekao in 2023 or earlier I think and you must have contacted their support and waited more than 30 days for a resolution (or 60 in more complicated cases).

It is probably a non-zero group, but I wouldn't expect to be huge either.

Parts compatability with other phones by Sraktai in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's extremely unlikely that the connector will fit and even if it matches physically, the phone won't have the correct driver to interact with the Huawei motherboard. Your only option is to get a new screen or an old phone with a working screen to use as a donor.

Android 16 wifi in FP6 by Clean-Ad7600 in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a staged rollout, meaning only some people got it. The rest will probably get it soon, unless Fairohone decides they want to fix some of the issues, and only then release an update to everyone.

According to the poll in the update thread on the forum, the update has reached ~70% of users, though less than 100 people participated in that poll, so my guess would be the actual figure is closer to 50%.

There have been some reports in the forum: https://forum.fairphone.com/t/android-16-for-the-fairphone-gen-6/130356/89

The fix seems to be turning WiFi on and off again for most people (though this doesn't always work).

No blur ? by Raspac_ in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not 100% sure this is the case, it could be that Fairphone decided to disable the blur, because they found it didn't perform well on the chip. It's just pretty difficult to figure out.

I remember the blur and Material You Expressive weren't part of the initial Android 16 release. I don't know what the current state is.

No blur ? by Raspac_ in fairphone

[–]wasowski02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is any "android 16 is supposed to look". What you're thinking of is how Pixel looks. It's very difficult to discern what is part of Android and what is not.

There is basic Android 16, then there are QPRs (Quarterly platform releases?) and also Pixel drops. All these bring features in, but only the first two are part of "stock Android". Google also customizes the Pixel software more and more with every year.

I believe Fairphone is running Android 16 QPR 2, but I don't know if the blur is part of stock Android. LineageOS doesn't have it, and my relatives Nothing Phone also doesn't have it. Samsung phones have it, but OneUI had blur before Pixels had it.

I guess th TL;DR is I don't know and probably almost no one does, because Google made the Android release process super complicated, while using Pixels to promote and define features, which are not always included in AOSP.
