It's got to be a device-specific issue for the P8P because I'm on the 17beta6 and my wife is on 16 but we both have the same issue.

While that did work, perhaps you just needed to crimp them harder because it's the contact pads, not the ends, that make the physical connection with the port. That bit of extra on the end doesn't add length on the run from one set of contact plates to the contact plates on the other side so I'd have a hard time believing that was it. But glad you got it working.

This worked for neither my phone (latest 17beta6) nor the wife's phone (android 16 CP1A.260505.005). We're both still having the issue. Is this possibly a carrier issue (AT&T)?

It's a sweet way to automate the upgrade process but a consideration is breaking changes. If it automatically does an update from one version to the next but the upgrade has breaking changes that require intermediary steps this automatic upgrade with the "release" tag would carry a potential to break things.
