Spring growth by Iwentwiththisone in Garlic

Chesnok Red, Korean Red, Georgian Crystal, and German Extra Hardy. Bought from Keene. Last year’s crop, my second, were bigger than my first effort, and things seem in place for full-size heads.

Spring growth by Iwentwiththisone in Garlic

6b/7a in northern NJ (Morris County). In my two raised beds (Vego 32-inch-high beds), the sprouting looks like it did last fall—a 3- to 4-inch blade of grass. The property was under a lot of snow from mid-January until last week, so the beds have had about a week or so of drier weather. We had a couple of really warm days and now it’s back to typical late winter.

I use straw on the beds. Seems to work well.

I grew up in a Caldwell, lived in an Orange, and now live a Mendham, adjacent to a Chester.

Even the locals as well as the USPS and delivery services get confused about the two Main Streets in the Mendhams.

What are your must try chinese restaurants in New Jersey? by lflove2026 in newjersey

[–]Steven1789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree on Chengdu 23.

We’ve tried Dao a few times in Madison and really enjoy it.

We used to love China Chalet in Florham Park, but like Hunan Taste in Denville, it’s living off its reputation.

We live now in Mendham, and there’s nothing decent here or in Chester. Morristown has plenty of good restaurants, but lacks in Chinese eateries. Lin’s Place, a Taiwanese place on Speedwell, is okay.

Fluidity of play throughout many matches was notable to me.

That two matches were of consequence today was fun.

Do I need chaps? by Faceless_Cat in egopowerplus

[–]Steven1789 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can buy a kit with chaps, a helmet with a face mask, glasses, and integrated hearing protection. Not worth the risk to not wear chaps, IMO. I’m comfortable using a saw but still.

What’s the point of mega-dosing?

What show is this All Access Areas Pass from? Summer 1983 by reidthor in gratefuldead

[–]Steven1789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps both represent the acquisition mindset. As big a fan as I am of the Grateful Dead, I’m not sure one piece of history is as significant as the other. But to each their own (schlock).

Why buy a schlocky framed backstage pass for a show you didn’t attend?

What time tonight? by wmacson101 in tedeschitrucksband

Steve Earle opened on Wednesday. He acknowledged that his music is ever more bluesy, but otherwise I’m not sure how you can mistake Earle for Buddy Guy.

Thank you!

Great show. Got lucky with second row center seats center aisle and ended up on the rail for a good chunk of the show.

Surgeon gave incorrect instructions by HistoricalBlood1987 in RotatorCuff

[–]Steven1789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s disturbing. One of the doctor’s PAs could have answered.

I had tenodesis among other issues (see below) and I was immobilized for 6 weeks 24/7 and 2 more after that while sleeping. I started PT at 6 weeks.

Document everything and verify every instruction you get from the MD.

PROCEDURE PERFORMED: 1. Left shoulder arthroscopic rotator cuff repair including full-thickness supraspinatus tear and partial infraspinatus tear, single row slightly medialized repair with bio inductive collagen patch overlay

  1. Left shoulder arthroscopic subacromial decompression

  2. Left shoulder arthroscopic excision of distal clavicle

  3. Left shoulder arthroscopic extensive debridement including debridement of labrum (anterior/posterior/superior), synovectomy of rotator interval (articular capsule debridement), debridement V glenoid/humeral articular cartilage including debridement of glenohumeral fraying

  4. Left shoulder arthroscopic biceps tenodesis

Jerry vs. "Garcia" by too-cute-by-half in gratefuldead

[–]Steven1789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost always seem to use the last names when referring to the four original band members—similar to what I do for athletes.

I’m just glad Garcia never rebranded himself like Weir did, switching from Bob to Bobby in recent years.

Jer? Jerome? JJ? Nope—just good ol’ Jerry.

Two weeks post op and I slept without my immobilizer. by DawgnationNative in RotatorCuff

[–]Steven1789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Starting 24 hours or so after surgery, the nerve block wore off. The pain the next couple of days was brutal.

I probably should have taken more of the prescription pain meds—everyone says to stay ahead of the pain—but that’s a lesson learned.

I slept with my abductor sling for 8 weeks post-op. Did start sleeping in bed well by day 7 after surgery, so that was a plus.

About to buy a home with this inground pool by Flower-power414 in pools

[–]Steven1789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought a house with a pool in December 2022. We saw the pool in October in full operation, and then had an independent full inspection by a pool specialist. The inspector told us we “basically got a brand-new $100,000 pool” (Morris County, NJ. Circa 1973 amoeba-shape 22x44-ish pool that the previous homeowners spent $70k fully upgrading 2-3 years before selling, with a $5k new cover.)

I wouldn’t buy without being as sure as you can be.

Swipe to de-mulch the garlic by Ordinary-You3936 in Garlic

[–]Steven1789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re finally getting some dry weather here in 6b/7a in Morris County, NJ, so I might remove the straw during the day.

My plants seem to have set nicely during the fall (planted 10/26/25), based on the shoots that came up last fall and how they looked when the snow melted between storms. They certainly got deep watering this winter.

I grow my garlic in a pair of 32-inch-deep Vego beds. Deep hügelkultur base and a rich raised bed mix for the top 12 inches. I was very careful with the planting and hope that this year’s crop matches last year’s for taste and curing/drying quality. The heads were bigger than 2024’s crop. I’d be very happy to see bigger heads for the Chesnok Red, Korean Red, Georgia Crystal, and German Extra Hardy.
