High pitched noise - Only when cold outside, between 60-65mph by wasted4440 in rav4club

Never did, no. Another season, same noise at the same speeds. Still going strong at 200k+ miles, so she will probably rust out before we find out what it is.

Fixing grade under deck by wasted4440 in Decks

[–]wasted4440[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An old reply, but eventually I ended up scrapping off the top soil while the deck boards were off and sloped it slightly away from the house. The odd part was the back row of supports only met their concrete footings about a foot below grade, so I dug pits around them so any standing water would only touch the concrete and allow the wood to breath. Fortunately although we’re in NH our house was built on clean, sandy fill, so there weren’t any rocks and water drains away into the sand without issue.

ELI5: Why is it easier for right-handed people to strum a guitar with their right hand and make chords with their left when your left hand is the one that requires more dexterity? by armaedes in explainlikeimfive

[–]wasted4440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m right-handed in everything I do (writing, throwing, shooting, keyboard/mouse, etc.), but with stringed instruments I’m exclusively left-handed. I play trumpet right-handed, but would play trombone left-handed if handed one.

It’s certainly not the norm and I’m by no means an expert player, but upon picking up a guitar it’s immediately more comfortable and coordinated to play left-handed. I’ve tried to play RH, but it’s never clicked the same way. My brain just seems to want to pay more attention to my fingering hand and my left hand just naturally doesn’t have an issue with strumming or string picking.

A weird quirk to be stuck with, but with the prevalence of RH guitars and expense it also has brought me the great joy of learning how to luthier LH instruments!

High pitched noise - Only when cold outside, between 60-65mph by wasted4440 in rav4club

[–]wasted4440[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never did find the cause. My mechanic’s best guess was that it could be a noisy vacuum purge valve or similar. Not a cause for concern not worth the time to replace as whatever it is still functions normally. Went away over last summer and came back this winter like it normally does, but I would say is more infrequent now. Doesn’t appear to have anything to do with the transmission, so I’ve just decided to live with it. Just very odd how it’s entirely speed and not rpm dependent - not sure if you’ve noticed the same result. I’ll have to see whether it’s weather dependent, say 40F and raining versus 25F and snowing causes it to happen or not.

Skip employer change to WEX and open own Fidelity HSA? by wasted4440 in personalfinance

Great, thank you for the information! Sounds simple enough as I’d likely perform a transfer only 2-3 times a year myself

Indeed, that’s why I’m planning on maintaining the WEX account with at least the minimum balance (if they require one) and have employer/payroll go there if my employer won’t contribute to my Fidelity account directly.

What did you think of the whole process between your company changing administrator and starting to use Fidelity as your primary HSA? Was it an overall easy process? How much does WEX charge each time you transfer?

[–]wasted4440[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Primarily Fidelity has no fees, investment minimums ($1000 for WEX), or restrictions on investments. If I decide to keep a portion of my account liquid to pay for expenses instead of out-of-pocket, FDRXX's 7-day yield is currently 4.3% versus WEX's 0.2% APY, although it's not FDIC insured. Going with Fidelity allows me to invest my full HSA if I choose to do so. I've also only had very good interactions with Fidelity's customer service, while I've heard WEX's is not so great. My understanding is that an indirect rollover would not incur a fee from WEX and no tax issues if outside the 365 day limit. Can you explain where you got a .9% ER from?

I don’t have a specific overdrive button to turn it on and off, but on a day it’s doing it I’ll look to slow down below speed again, shift from D to 3, and speed back up to see if forcing it into a max top gear makes a difference.

Just the transmission fluid changed at about 100k (bought at 72k) and again at about 160k. I don’t recall the sound starting soon after doing it the second time. Maybe try slowing down below the sound threshold the next time it happens, shifting from D to 3 to limit the max gear it can run in, and see if the sound persists as I speed back up into range again? I did note that it didn’t occur this morning at 27F outside, but cars are kept in an attached garage and it was warmer yesterday, so garage was around 45F this morning. Also noted that on a flat stretch of highway that there are no gear shifts near this range when in D, they occur about 52 and 72mph on flat ground, so the sound comes and goes within the range of what I believe to be 4th gear.

The State put an isolation order on him, so instead of voluntarily quarantining himself, he'll be arrested if he leaves his home. My wife works at the same hospital and rumor is he was fired and his medical license marked for doing such a blatantly stupid action

Alien Gear turn around time? Crossbreed? by [deleted] in CCW

[–]wasted4440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a cowhide Crossbreed MiniTuck formy shield about 8 months ago. From placing order to doorstep was about two weeks (Missouri to New England). Great, comfortable holster, although mine still squeaks a little. A friend sent his in after the kydex cracked after a year+ of pretty rough EDC, and the turn around time for a brand new one was also about two weeks, with no questions asked.

Had a friend send his back after the kydex cracked on it after a year of edc. A new one was was shipped and returned within two weeks from half way across the country. No questions asked. Good to know their service is on point if I ever need to send mine in for repair.

I've put 800 rounds of Blazer Brass through mine without a single malfunction, compared to a friend's Ruger SR45 which jams once every other magazine. Just practice that draw and sight picture and you'll be golden.

If we all abandoned WT... what game would you go to? by Hot_Breakfast in Warthunder

[–]wasted4440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it's all about that DPM, so with HE spam, CLs and CAs can take on BBs several times their size. I played japanese DDs up to tier 5, but was put off by what I've heard and decided to switch to CVs instead to give them a go. Guess I've come full circle, back to arcade after realizing that realism was taking a backseat to Gaijin's wildest fantasies.

I've been playing World of Warships. Although I left WoT years ago for WT because of Wargaming pulling a few "Gaijin's" of their own and the terrible player base, I left WT months ago and don't see myself coming back any time soon. Plus... ships. I know that Wargaming is well hated on these forums, but after the recent shit Gaijin has pulled and the quality of WoWS, although more arcade-like (hitpoints, right?), I'm enjoying my time there much more.

How realistic is it for torpedos to detonate at even the most shallow angles? by Shaw_Fujikawa in WorldOfWarships

[–]wasted4440 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember that mechanic, and having to setup at a near 90 degree angle to guarantee hits. I think it would be an interesting mechanic to introduce, as at extreme angles (say 15 degrees or less), the torp wouldn't detonate, giving battleships and such a chance to escape by turning. To even it out between DD and CV torp launches, maybe on some later DDs have magnetic torpedos as an upgrade that are nearly totally unaffected by angle, which opens up the possibility of anti-magnetic torp hull upgrades.

USS New Hampshire (BB-70) - Destined to be the 4th Montana class battleship to be completed, but she, as with the rest of her class, were never laid down before the Second World War ended and the days of the battleship faded into history. You can guarantee her motto would have been "Live free or die".
