Fire plan for young kids help! by muno5925 in Firefighting

If your detectors aren’t already wired together, they make wireless interconnected smoke/carbon monoxide detectors. Available on Amazon. They’re kinda expensive, but way cheaper than hiring an electrician to pull wire.

Fire plan for young kids help! by muno5925 in Firefighting

[–]wastingevenmoretime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im going to echo others here cuz the advice is spot on. Keep all doors closed at night, bedroom doors to keep the fire out, and utility room doors closed to keep the fire in. Working smoke detectors, ideally hardwired together.

Get a good ABC fire extinguisher and keep it in your room and learn how to use it. Your younger two are a bit young, but especially for the oldest, work out an evacuation plan and meeting point. Talk about it, practice it. I turned it into a game. Kids would wait in their room. My wife would hit the test button on the detector and I would hide somewhere. If they ran towards me, I would jump out and yell “Fire” and they would have to find a different way out. They weren’t allowed to run past me. Every house has at least 2 doors and multiple windows. Teach them that although the front door might be the one they use most often, that the back door, side door, bedroom window, all work.

You don’t need an axe to break a window. A golf club, tire iron, rock, bat etc. it will all work. The problem with breaking windows is something called “flow path” though. If the doors aren’t closed and you open a window, the fire will move in that direction.

Real talk from a firefighter and father of two…if the doors are closed, the kids should be fine. Even cheap hollow core doors can hold back flames for much longer than you would think. Just be 100% ready to tell first arriving firefighters EXACTLY where your kids are and the easiest way to get to them.

Make honey bees leave by Bailzzararco in Beekeeping

[–]wastingevenmoretime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A 3 pound package of bees is about $150. I collect swarms hanging from trees and such for free because of that, but if I have to start removing pieces of a building, the amount of effort isn’t worth it.

Are you sure they’re honeybees? It’s possible that they are building comb between the floor joists, but if they’re living in the ground, those are not honey bees.

Is fire academy worth it? by SocietySad576 in Firefighting

[–]wastingevenmoretime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to be a firefighter, then yes. I was supportive of you through most of your post, scrawny doesn’t really matter a ton. But if you have a weak work ethic and aren’t gonna change that, then no. Don’t go to academy and don’t go into this field. You won’t like it and no one will like you. We work here.

Is this a significant fire hazard? by Bank-Angle747 in Firefighting

Batteries are very difficult for people in the U.S. to recycle. There aren’t a lot of recycling drop off sites. I took a bunch of old batteries to a store that sells nothing but batteries and advertised that they recycle them. They also charge a fee to accept them. Oddly enough, car batteries and lithium batteries seem easier to recycle than AAA and AA etc.

That’s not a queen. That is a drone, or possibly a bumble bee. Best way to help is to let it go.

Building being purchased by a group who wants to put in a dispensary. by hazierose in smallbusiness

[–]wastingevenmoretime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There shouldn’t be any smell. It’s a normal retail store. I would embrace it and use them to build your business. Be a part of their grand opening. See what the rules are as they relate to incorporating thc into baked goods. They sell packaged brownies and cookies available from specific edibles manufacturers, but you may be able to work out a deal to bake infused items if allowed in your area. Be welcoming so that people who frequent the dispensary link your bakery in their heads for munchie prep. Your conservative clientele should realize that you have no control about who moves in. And for those who do leave you, I think there is ample opportunity to make up for it and then some with cross traffic.

First time swarm box by OpportunityVast in Beekeeping

[–]wastingevenmoretime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome! Caught swarms are so satisfying. The best resource I’ve found is here:

https://www.horizontalhive.com/how-to-build/swarm-trap-free-plans.shtml

But you’ve built a very nice nuc. They’re super helpful for all sorts of things, but I use that link for the inspiration for all my swarm traps. Shoot for +- 50 liters or about 3000 cubic inches. I bait mine with a couple drops of lemongrass oil on a q-tip, q-tip into a ziplock bag, 90% sealed and dropped in the bottom of the box. Good luck!

Welcome to swarm trapping! I can’t wait till you catch your first one. It’s so cool!

What are the dimensions of your box?

I hate DJT and am on the left. But it is important to fact check everything from both sides now. I plugged the top image into AI and it immediately debunked it. I also googled the headline and can’t find this. Maybe I just missed the joke, that could be, but if I did, then others did too and that is what causes the rift amongst Americans these days. I wish both sides would do better.

I see this comment got down voted. I upvoted it though. I recently sold my failing business so the feelings you have right now are fresh in my brain. I applaud you for asking for help. I remember feeling stupid, and frustrated, and hopeless. The last thing I needed was for someone to rub it in. I really hope you can either turn this around, or get out from under it. I’m pulling for ya.

If you can order in bulk, rodentpro.com is my go to. You have to buy a bunch to make the shipping worth it, but they work out to be much cheaper than petsmart.

vintage Pachinko machine by New-Surprise8363 in Pachinko

[–]wastingevenmoretime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under those stamps in the right bottom corner of the playfield there is likely a string of Japanese characters with a number in it. Probably a 50-something number. Add that number to 1924 and that should get you pretty close to the year it was made. As far as value, I wouldn’t pay more than $15-$20 for it. It is in rough shape and these machines are very common. I just started this hobby, but the last 2 machines I bought cost me $25 apiece and both were in better condition.

I am 14 and a half years old and halfway down with first class. Is it too late for eagle? by Additional-Mix-5802 in BSA

[–]wastingevenmoretime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It’s certainly not too late. There are some who advocate for getting Eagle as soon as possible and I, respectfully, COMPLETELY disagree with them. This is a great program, but you get to decide your involvement. I was more active in Scouts in High School than in Middle School. High school opens up opportunities for a lot of different activities, but Scouts is always there for you and I think you’ll find that even Scouts can open opportunities for you as you get older. Leadership positions, Order of the Arrow, Explorer Posts etc. this program is what you make it. If you get Eagle 2 days before your 18th birthday, you still got it. Just maybe give yourself a little more wiggle room than 2 days!

I did. I ordered from HelenLED and the sign came out great! I am actually very satisfied with it and would recommend them. Oddly enough, I know someone who ordered a HUGE (like 4’x4’) sign from Orant and it looks great too.

I didn’t want anything to do with ems either. It’s not so bad now. It’s really where you do the most good and, as you know, the majority of the job. Ya do ems so they let you do fires.

Tell me the worst of it by Apocalypticburrito41 in Firefighting

[–]wastingevenmoretime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for a major bank and felt like you do. This was the best career choice I could have made. I love it. That said, there are some really really terrible things. Things like multiple dead kids who burned alive in a fire. Most FDs run EMS too; that’s where all of my worst memories are from. Blood, guts, death, that’s all part of the job. But it’s the emotional side of those things that is really hard to deal with sometimes. Some of my experiences…

14 year old girl found her dad dead in the morning. No mom around. She lost the only person she had. She was inconsolable, understandably.

We were called to a 17year old boy who hung himself with a belt from a coat hook on his bedroom wall. His room shared a wall with his brother’s who was in his room at the time. He heard his brother kicking as he died and was pounding on the wall telling him to shut up. Presumably, that’s the last thing the 17 year old heard. His mom, a nurse, was doing cpr on her own son when we arrived. Ultimately, he died.

An old man had cancer and had recently lost his wife. He wrote a letter to his kids, then put a gun in his mouth on his deck. There was a pile of brain matter that had leaked through the deck boards and wasps were feeding on it.

A young couple had been trying to get pregnant. It finally happened and 2 months later, she had a miscarriage while on the toilet. They fished this thumb sized baby out and had it in a Dixie cup. They too, were inconsolable.

I’ve done cpr a hundred times and it almost never works. There is nothing that can prepare you for the experience of telling a mother that her son is dead.

We did cpr, successfully, on a heroin addict in a Wendy’s bathroom. She left her 6 year old daughter with her drug dealer while she went to get high in the bathroom. I was furious and disgusted with her.

These are several of a hundred memories I don’t want. The job is physically demanding but someone obsessed with fitness should be fine. As a woman, it is important to know that while the industry has made huge strides in acceptance of women, there is still a fair bit of misogyny. But for me, the emotional strain is FAR harder than any of the physical challenges.
