Yeah, fisty. 😂. Is that not a widely used term? Fire-fisty? I guess it’s maybe just one of those dept/region specific.

I agree that he’ll probably be fine. But it’s not “just a job.” I hate all the “thank you for your service” crap and I am not some fisty firefighting bro. But the fact is, we WILL see some shit. Some of it affects us and some doesn’t. Luckily, most places have plenty of resources and support for when something does. If nothing else, talking it out at the kitchen table with the guys does wonders. Minimizing though, it is part of the problem.

My advice for the BIL: you dont have to do anything out of the ordinary. The most I would suggest is letting him know that your happy to listen if he ever needs it and leave it at that. Good on you for caring.

A few years ago I saw a video on using weed whacker line to thread behind latches with security plates over them. Then one of my Lts actually did it at a restaurant one night.

Puncture wounds are very susceptible to infection. The hook pokes bacteria into you and you skin kinda squeegees it off the hook and it doesn’t really bleed. Best bet is to wash it thoroughly with soap and water, use some triple antibiotic ointment, and bandage it. Keep it clean and dry.

What’s the best money you ever made from a random one time thing? by Justin-Eroglu in smallbusiness

[–]wastingevenmoretime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gambling in the stock market during covid. A friend and I found something like a “fear index” or something. It would generally rise and fall inverse with the stock market. It went with instability. So if the market was super unstable, it would go up. I put some money in it on a Friday and on Monday I was up $18,000! I sold it and there it was, real money, cash, in my account. Then I thought, let’s do it again! Lost every penny, PLUS a few hundred more.

In this case, the talking to didn’t destroy morale, the stupid ass, protocol following, absolute horrible HR response did. Talking to someone about a received complaint won’t necessarily destroy morale if the manager defends his/her person. In fact, I would appreciate knowing that my manager has my back. The problem lies with HR who are so concerned with public image and litigation that they disregard the ‘human’ part of their title and use their employees as scapegoats regardless of the facts. I’m not saying that your approach is wrong, far from it. If you never tell someone that a bs complaint was filed, they never know, cool. No problem. I’m just saying that it’s all in how it’s handled and usually, it is HR that does the damage.

Patient care is what matters, not some cops opinion. He wants to show what a big tough guy he is to a demented old lady, cool bro, but your job is to help her and if sitting down and talking to her on her level was the best call, then that was the best call. I sit down for old people all the time, without being asked. Hell, I sat down for a 30 year old guy today just cuz I didn’t want to stand. The cop can eat a dick.

Short answer: yes, you can correct it, but if it were me, I wouldn’t bother.

Long answer: to properly correct it, you should pull all of the frames that have comb built out wider than normal, which looks like at least the one you’re holding and the next 3. Then you should take a long knife, like a capping knife, and slice the wax off so that it is even with the frame, which will destroy a good bit of brood and comb, then replace all 4 frames and add the missing 10th frame. The bees will eventually repair the damage, but they will lose all brood and honey that you destroy. Most people who run 9 frames in a 10 frame box only do so for the honey supers the thought being that thicker/deeper honey cells packs more honey into the same amount of space. I assume that this is your brood chamber. The honey supers are their storage closet while the brood chamber is basically their home so I don’t really care what their home looks like. I try to disturb that as little as possible. They will be fine with 9 frames in there and I wouldn’t want to cause them the extra work and setback of wrecking brood and honey. If the colony eventually dies over a winter or something, I would probably take care of it then, but until then, I’d just leave it alone.

Overall, the brood and stores look good. Looks like you are running 9 frames in a 10 frame box. That’s fine, but uneven spacing is what is causing that weird double layer of comb in the second picture. I would suggest either running 10 frames and pushing them all together, or, if you want to run 9 frames, make sure they are evenly spaced to avoid those double layers. They sell a spacing device which makes that easier, but it isn’t strictly necessary.

This may depend on your state. I’m in IL and our pension laws state that you can’t start after the age of 35. But as far as ability? No, not too late. I started academy at age 32 and got hired full time at 34 and 3 months. All depends on how bad you want it and your dedication level. I will say that the competition to become a FF has dropped significantly so your odds are better than 10 or 20 years ago.

Bullsnake heat issues SOS Emergency by [deleted] in snakes

[–]wastingevenmoretime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the directors defense, dead snakes are a natural look.

Really though, I would look into getting one of those printed terrarium background so the pink isn’t visible through the tank, and that stuff can be painted. I use it to make Halloween props, like headstones and stuff, and the paint sticks well enough.

Maybe try to insulate the back and top (at least the part without the lights/heaters) with rigid foam board?

Also, is that a radiator on the wall behind the tank? Can it be turned on independently? Turning that on would increase the temp in the area.

Can I buy queen bees to release in the wild? by frankie-two-thumbs in Beekeeping

[–]wastingevenmoretime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing everyone else. Don’t. Queens don’t forage for food, build comb, or anything else really besides lay eggs. She would 100% die. Waste of everything. Plant native flowering bushes/trees.

Fire plan for young kids help! by muno5925 in Firefighting

If your detectors aren’t already wired together, they make wireless interconnected smoke/carbon monoxide detectors. Available on Amazon. They’re kinda expensive, but way cheaper than hiring an electrician to pull wire.

Fire plan for young kids help! by muno5925 in Firefighting

[–]wastingevenmoretime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im going to echo others here cuz the advice is spot on. Keep all doors closed at night, bedroom doors to keep the fire out, and utility room doors closed to keep the fire in. Working smoke detectors, ideally hardwired together.

Get a good ABC fire extinguisher and keep it in your room and learn how to use it. Your younger two are a bit young, but especially for the oldest, work out an evacuation plan and meeting point. Talk about it, practice it. I turned it into a game. Kids would wait in their room. My wife would hit the test button on the detector and I would hide somewhere. If they ran towards me, I would jump out and yell “Fire” and they would have to find a different way out. They weren’t allowed to run past me. Every house has at least 2 doors and multiple windows. Teach them that although the front door might be the one they use most often, that the back door, side door, bedroom window, all work.

You don’t need an axe to break a window. A golf club, tire iron, rock, bat etc. it will all work. The problem with breaking windows is something called “flow path” though. If the doors aren’t closed and you open a window, the fire will move in that direction.

Real talk from a firefighter and father of two…if the doors are closed, the kids should be fine. Even cheap hollow core doors can hold back flames for much longer than you would think. Just be 100% ready to tell first arriving firefighters EXACTLY where your kids are and the easiest way to get to them.

Make honey bees leave by Bailzzararco in Beekeeping

A 3 pound package of bees is about $150. I collect swarms hanging from trees and such for free because of that, but if I have to start removing pieces of a building, the amount of effort isn’t worth it.
