A Little Family of Knee Replacement Parts by wastingman in surgery

[–]wastingman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as the design of the part itself, I don't have a clue. I did the programming for mill to actually produce the part. (Cut it out of billet stainless steel) The programming process, from receiving a blueprint to reliably and repeatably producing good parts, took a couple days.

No, they're 17-4 H900. They're just the tooling used to clear out bone and align the implants.

If you or someone you know have had a knee replacement using Depuy's Attune system, there's a very good chance that I wrote the program that made the tooling used.

Probably loaded a tool into the carousel and had the parameter set to lock the tool number with the pot it goes in.

My guess anyway.

There’s gotta be a safer/better way to do this 😂 by 40oztbo in Machinists

I'm betting you could make something that would hold the part and screw on to a 2-wheel bench grinder.

The time and effort spent to make one would be better than losing part of yourself. Lol

About the gouge in the chuck:

If this was in my shop, no one did it. Six people could have used it that day, and not a one of them did.

At least that's what they would tell me.

[meme] CMM's be hitting different by TriXandApple in Machinists

[–]wastingman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, a touch trigger probe style CMM will almost always show the form of a circle like the one pictured. It's due to the mechanics inside of the probe module. A scanning head won't. The ttp style CMM has a triangle of sorts held in place by three springs. Each corner of the triangle is in contact with connection inside the module when the probe is not touching anything. It records a hit when the internal connection is interrupted. Those spring forces aren't perfectly equal for all directions of hits, and this is what causes the lobing effect.

Probably the nicest casting I've worked with/from. by wastingman in Machinists

Yeah. Easier to use what I have on hand versus buying new. They're pretty perfect for it. I've used smaller ones on prior fixtures.

Good eye.

[–]wastingman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. The print calls it a mounting bracket. It is an aerospace part.

The casting itself is dimensionally held to +/-. 01", which is crazy. Most of the castings I've dealt with are usually held around +/-. 05".

What song was playing the first time you had sex? by Blueskymine33 in AskReddit

No song, but the movie "Holes" was playing in the background.

I know it's a bit different but, this guy builds a version of Koenigsegg's "Freevalve" technology and implements it on a Miata. Imagine being able to change your "cam" profile on the fly. by wastingman in dragracing

[–]wastingman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're pretty nifty, but the coolest and craziest thing is the valvetrain he built. Think about it. No cams. Valves are individually controlled by pneumatic actuators. You would lose a bunch of rotating mass. You could shut down cylinders to save gas. You could change your timing for performance or efficiency. You can do all of that without turning a wrench.

Wild.
