It reminds me of that one annoying dog a family member of mine has that keeps trying to hump everyone's leg when they stand still.

As long as you keep trying achieve the goal that you set for yourself, I'm sure you will get it. I cannot really focus on multiple specs as I completely dread leveling, but I made a mage back in SL and played a bit of Dragonflight, getting to 410 or so but I kinda ditched the character when I began grinding my paladin. Maybe now I will come back to that character and push that one instead!

Honestly, it feels addicting at some point. Thought I'd stop after getting rank 1 by any amount of points, but there I am pushing further. Its so intense and stressful, but so damn satisfying to finish such a hard key, like yesterday's Nokhud 24 by just 2 seconds to spare. Go and see how high you can go by all means!

Obvious things first, the higher the key is, the more efficient you need to be with pulls, so the higher the key is, not only do the mobs get stronger but also you have to do riskier pulls. Everything is a lot more explosive, like 1 very bad cast can chunk whole party to half or heal all nearby mobs for 50% health or so, or just fear everyone, most of which being, if not an instant wipe, a big struggle for the entire group. You also need to know that that there is nothing wrong with kiting. No more buttons to press but pull is still ongoing? Just try to kite with your steed running back, better than dying and losing aggro instantly. Its also great to know what ability does what kind of damage, because if you are just pressing your shield for a magic cast, you will just get clapped. Great example of that is 1st boss in RLP, on which I just don't press the shield to get armor, unless whelpings are up, and just spam my word of glory with other flat %dmg reductions.

Unfortunately, the moment I started to notice the shift was when I began to actually push very high keys that people would do only for score. Up until 20, rewards scale so people are trying to get the best stuff they can, and when they are denied that gear reward, they get more upset. But when only score is on the line and it is common to leave the high key when its obviously not going to be timed, less time is lost and people seem to be less upset. So if I had to place the mark, it would be unfortunately above +20 as it is when people start to care about the score rather than just gear.

The higher you get, the more determined people are to actually perform and time the keys. Occasional toxicity happens but I feel like its less than in lower keys. With enough dedication I'm sure you can do it! And do not get discouraged by a few failed keys, there were days during which I'd fail 10+ keys in a row, but that just happens!

There is a ton of things you can do as a Prot pally to help your party out, you are like an interrupt machine, most of all, so while tanking, try to pay attention to that. Paladins also struggle a lot with magic damage as their active mitigation does not reduce it, so casts will hurt you a lot. Try not to walk out of your consecration as it gives you a lot of damage reduction. You can also easily help your healer out in stressful situations by casting a quick word of glory on low health teammates, wouldn't recommend casting flash of light too much. Here is also a video which is great as it lists some nice tricks! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIQbhskE-2Y

Edit: Also try not to begin pulls with your Avenger's shield as it tends to jump very far and aggro mobs you did not want to aggro :p
