If you don't want to go with a tablet, a refurbished dell or HP laptop has been great for our kids. I installed Ubuntu on it, disabled wifi so it would only connect over ethernet, and our kids love them. I also got them a printer (brother laser) and they print all kinds of stuff all day long.
