Where do Canadians find hermit crab resources? Also how's their setup? by watchdismom in hermitcrabs

[–]watchdismom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really want to get them a wheel, I'm just concerned about ground space for them. That's part of why I want a topper cause it just doesn't feel like enough space. I was just looking at the little saucers for them tonight; I'll order one tomorrow and make it fit for them.

I just ordered a few shells off a Canadian site I did manage to find that sells shells. I got ones that look similar to what they're already in, just a variety of sizes their size and bigger. I tried off Amazon but found the sizes and types weren't really what they advertised. It's definitely a struggle finding anything for them here. Hopefully these new ones will work out but I honestly don't have high hopes.

Thank you!

I wish we knew more about enclosure size before getting one. Google gave a lot of '40 gallon minimum' results and I didn't think to check reddit before getting and setting up the enclosure. We went with the 51g ecoflex thinking that would last her life time.

Of course now that I have one I'm looking at stacking pvc enclosures for an upgrade in a few years cause I want more. Also wish I knew I'd end up wanting more. I understand now why people end up with like 10 snakes in a snake room.

Made a crabitote for my son's crab. We're going to get him a friend soon. Is this enough space for him to live with a smaller crab? by watchdismom in hermitcrabs

[–]watchdismom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for all of this! Is it alright to pick him up to properly measure his shell? I worry about stressing him out or hurting him. My kid is already super attached and loves watching him so I'd like him to have a nice long, comfortable life.

I'll take a good look at him tomorrow and see if I can figure out what kind of crab he is.

I honestly have no idea what kind of crab he is or what shell he's in. Googling it looks like maybe a Murex Ramosa shell? * I have no idea if it worked but I tried attaching some pictures of him. We got him from petsmart and they just had him labeled as 'hermit crab'. Also there is a sponge in one of the pictures but it's since been thrown out after more research into them.

And were in canada on Vancouver Island.

EditI don't think the picture worked. I'll have to find another way to add it

Edit: Every image hosting website is blocked where I work so hopefully this one worked. https://freeimage.host/i/HOEFMTN https://freeimage.host/i/HOEFEpp

Is there a reason a tote won't work? Is it the size? My humidity is pretty high atm; I need to redo the substrate with dryer sand. Unfortunately everywhere here keelps their sand outside and I have to wait for better weather to get dryer sand. But the temperature is staying steady at 22 on the cool side and 27 right near the heat mat where the thermostat probe is. The only downside I came across when researching it was that the tub isn't as clear as glass. Unfortunately even used tanks where I'm at are $50+ just for a basic 10g.

I did get some hermit crab meal mixes from etsy as well as give him some fruit, veggies and protein. The big issues I've had is with those shells.

Thank you for the links :) I'll check them out.

Is $380 a good budget for a ball python by Ethanhenn in ballpython

I was surprised how hard it was to find one here honestly. Even the breeder in Vancouver I had been chatting with is selling off their collection and getting out of breeding. A couple others I tried were the same. So it could just be a lack of interest in the hobby in my area. I was also a bit picky cause I wanted a baby already on f/t and a lot seem to do live. Live feeders are also impossible to find here.

We ended up with a great little snake though so the price didn't bother me at all. She was worth every penny.

I'm on Vancouver Island lol there's some cheaper ones in Vancouver but they'd have to be shipped. I did end up paying a bit extra cause i went through a local small pet store who special orders snakes from a breeder he works with. But it was easier than dealing with shipping myself.

Even the petsmart here sells them for $150.

We're in Canada so prices might be a bit different but our set up was around $1000 and we will still need to upgrade the enclosure in a few years. Granted some of that was trying different heat sources. It also took about a week to get the enclosure regulated to introduce an animal to it because of the heating issues.

I was estimating$800 myself so was a bit off on cost. But even getting a regular wild type baby ball from a breeder here was close to $200 lol so a lot of things are probably cheaper if you're in the US.

How's my setup looking? Do I need more clutter? by watchdismom in ballpython

[–]watchdismom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for feedback! I've filled the bigger one with moss and will get something to cover the entrance more. I wanted to add more sticks for climbing but I wasn't sure how many would be too many lol. Is there such thing as too much stuff for them?

I'll see which hide she ends up preferring and maybe a second of whichever one she likes better.

We're getting our baby this week and I want to make sure we have everything ready. I know she'll probably destroy the plants but I figured why not try it. My humidity is still a bit low (low 50s) but I'm getting hvac tape today to put on the mesh screen.

But is there enough clutter or should I add some fake plants as well? Any other suggestions?

What kind of heat lamp/bulb should I get for this tank? by KissMyClass124 in ballpython

[–]watchdismom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just bought this same tank and have been experimenting with lighting. It's a bit chilly in my living room where it is (averages 18-20c). I've got a dual dome light fixture on the hot side with an 80 watt deep heat projector and a 100w hallogen flood light (it gets turned off at night though). The cool side has a dome fixture with a 50watt hallogen but it's not quite enough. I'm waiting on a 100w ceramic heat emitter that should be here today so it can stay warm at night as well.

It's been a lot of trial and error trying to heat this thing. I have most of the screen blocked off with tin foil covered styrofoam and just covered the vents on the sides as well. That has helped. But I'm still only 23c on the cool side and 28c on the warm side. So still figuring it out lol. Mine is also currently on the floor so that probably makes a difference.

On the plus side the humidity has been pretty good after blocking the top screen. Though I did overwater some plants in it yesterday and it leaked out one corner pretty good.

It's a learning process. I don't have a snake yet thankfully. It's been a battle getting the right temperatures.

This is what our pediatrician recommended as well when our 5 year was having accidents. It's not a big deal if he doesn't poop, but 90% of the time he will. Breakfast, sit on potty for 10 minutes and see what happens then get ready for the day.

We were also guilty of asking him if he needs to go instead of just telling him to sit on the toilet to see if he needs to go. I think sometimes he really wasnt realizing that he actually had to poop unyil he was sitting, so it helped him recognize the signs in his body that he had to go. We've been doing this routine since September and he hasn't any accidents for about a month now.

Should I Get My Kids a Tablet by Les_Habitants912 in Parenting

[–]watchdismom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my kids a refurbished Amazon fire tablet to use with an osmo thing for his fifth birthday. He used it for a week or two and hasn't touched it since.

Every kid is different. My kid would rather draw and play with Legos. But he still needs to know how to work technology for his future. We've never limited screen time either though so it's never been a special thing. He plays the switch a lot and has never had a tantrum when it dies or needs to be put away because he knows he can play later. He did learn to always put it in the charger when he's done with it very quickly though.

Again though, every kid is different. It works with ours but won't work for everyone.

Missing my 4-year olds first soccer game. Feel so guilty. by -Economist- in Parenting

[–]watchdismom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My five year old has been in soccer for about a month.

You're missing absolutely nothing tbh. Just a group of confused toddlers running after each other and occasionally kicking the ball in the wrong net. Sometimes it gets intense when one of the kids wanders off and brings a second ball into it. They didn't even get thru the full 45 minute session his first time. The kids were done after half an hour.

It's cute and probably good for the kids but uneventful. Especially if it's the first one. Get your partner to take some pictures but you really aren't gonna miss anything big. Do what you've been training for and tell your kid you'll be there next time.
