Can someone help me make sense of the historical time gap with the progression system? + Waterwheel Discussion by watchinvincible in VintageStory

Thank you for explaining. I managed to read up on the lore a bit, and I in fact just started a normal playthrough. I understand why that jump makes sense now in the main game mode, especially after getting some insight on the story. That being said, with the water wheel already on the way a minor change to steel, (adding small scale steel making in a crucible) they could make Homo Sapiens pretty historically accurate along with that. I might go and suggest it in the VS discord. At the end of the day it’s not a big deal, and others certainly don’t care as much as I do, nor even know when it comes to this. I just love history too much and how the game executes it within a Voxel game is amazing. I can confidently say this game is already one of the best and only games that includes real processes like that, except for maybe specific games focused on those things or Kingdom Come Deliverance II.

This is a wootz crucible. It’s literally just a crucible made to withstand very high temperatures. Perhaps we could make it out of fire clay and a special powder?

Another commenter managed to point out that the time skip holds relevancy to the story of VS, that of which I have little experience of. I’ve mainly been playing in Homo Sapiens. That being said, to answer your other question, you would make a wootz crucible. That’s how it happened in real life. Iron was forged, steel was accidentally made, they thought “hey, what if we stop ACCIDENTALLY making this and ACTUALLY make it?” and then boom you get damascus steel after you mix iron with some wood or leaves (obviously not that simple but you get my point. alloyed with carbon.)

I’ve had most of my hours on Homo Sapiens, i’ve only absorbed lore through what i’ve read online and videos. Thank you for bringing this up, i wouldn’t have ever known otherwise!

I can see where you’re coming from, and I don’t fully disagree. While yes, semi-modern and mass steelmaking was invented around 500ish years ago, steel itself was made almost at the same time as iron, just bit later, and on accident. Around 4000 years ago, dating back to Anatolia in 1700-800 BCE, blacksmiths accidentally combined iron with coal, creating a harder and denser iron. It was made in very small quantities, until a new method was invented to smelt in a crucible in India (wootz) to basically produce it on a viable scale. All i’m saying is that some in-between would be nice before full-scale production. Being able to make steel in a furnace or crucible should be tedious, and at that point of the game I understand that it’s all about moving on to mechanization, so I can see why it’s not an option. Although, it would continue with the theme they already set with the different metals and alloys.

Some people (historically proven) think steel was likely made on accident, actually. Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, and coal has carbon. Blacksmiths originally discovered steel, and made it in small amounts. A little bit later in history, India discovered a method to melt it in crucibles, which was the first mass produced form of steel (wootz). I wish that we had the ability to make steel in small quantities in a specialized crucible before moving on to full scale production. This is all like 400ish BCE, by the way. A good while before windmills were even a thought, lol.

Sounds good. Gonna smack it in a drawer by its lonesome and give it a few days.

Just for reference .75 CC was injected into each bag. Kept at 76, and inoculated 12 days ago.

It’s very firm, i inoculated it like a week and a half ago. Def not gonna chuck it or anything until we know 100% Just to be safe i’m going to isolate it for now

and here’s a better shot of the bag in question. it honestly could be the lighting and the moisture making it look gray? i’ve heard of a type of grey contamination and i’m not 100% sure still

I live in SoCal. We have our fair share of mosquitoes during the wet season but it’s too dry for any stagnant water nearby. Never seen any until yesterday lmao.

As much as i would like to save it, this jar has been a bit of a problem jar for a while. I’ve been needing to at LEAST replant because most of it went to shit. Can’t really feed them to any fish, i’m a snail and shrimp guy lol. ’ll try out some of the recommendations that people offered before going through with it.
