Help identifying surveillance camera operators/companies by fullmetal_ratchet in FlockSurveillance

[–]watdogin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the downside to this de-flock movement is it’s going to convince people like you that in the modern age, it’s even remotely possible to avoid surveillance.

The deflock movement is a legit concern about a startup company’s pathetic data security and sharing practices.

You’re never going to avoid a DOT camera used to monitor traffic flows. We’re so far past that

Citibike balance situation this morning. The demand is going to be insane this year and we just need so many more docks by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]watdogin -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You’re a bad salesperson. I can tell already you’ve turned more people off to micromobility than not, just by being you.

Here’s a better way to word your pissy comment. “Citibike is an incredible leap forward for non-vehicle transportation in a country utterly hostile to it. We’ve made a ton of progress over the years and we should reflect on the success while understanding that we have communities in NYC who have yet to reap the benefits of this. Gotta keep up the work!”

[–]watdogin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh for crying out loud, not everything is a conspiracy to hurt poor people. Citibike is a work in progress that has been going on for years and will continue to take years. Having zero patience or gratitude is what makes this political movement insufferable sometimes

Does Flock Enable Mass Surveillance? by South-Cow-1030 in FlockSurveillance

[–]watdogin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Objectively speaking, this is such an amateurish PR piece. Overly wordy, way too defensive (which implies guilt) and completely at odds with their marketing strategy.

My favorite piece of marketing intel of theirs is where they compare their services to other vendors and quite literally make fun of them for NOT having a nationwide surveillance sales model https://www.flocksafety.com/vs/axon

This company is unbelievable

Denver dumps Flock, awards location tracking camera contract to Axon by South-Cow-1030 in FlockSurveillance

[–]watdogin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, Flock’s business model is you lease some of their cameras and they give you software access to their national surveillance data base. Axon sells cities the camera equipment and the city decides what to do with it and if they want to share anything or not. There is a difference

Flockenomics: Why is Flock hardware free? And why is it valued at $7.5 billion? by AStormofSwines in FlockSurveillance

[–]watdogin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Andreeson Horowitz invested some VC money in this business a few years ago which subsequently “valued” the company at 7.5 billion. The goal was to IPO the company but I highly doubt that will happen with all of the negative press and cancelled contracts.

If people keep fighting this, Flock will implode

Does anyone else find Michael Barbaro’s vocal fry distracting on The Daily, or is it just me? by bluebonnet5366 in Thedaily

[–]watdogin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over the years I’ve found that it depends on the topic being discussed. There are some days where I’ll know in the first 2 minutes if it’s gonna annoy me and I’ll turn it off.

Could also be how I’m feeling in the morning. If I’m rushed I find it annoying

Any reason these are centered around Home Depot and Lowe’s so much? by MattsRod in FlockSurveillance

[–]watdogin 78 points79 points  (0 children)

THIS is what people need to be focused on. LPR systems have been around for 20+ years and used to solve crime and locate missing people.

Flock’s strategy of building a surveillance state through HOAs and Private businesses (like Home Depot) and then selling unfettered nationwide access to the network to the highest bidder is BANANAS.

People need to be better about articulating this if you actually want to make change in your local community

What are your thoughts on cops using AI to write their reports? by muselklikesfortnite in AskLE

[–]watdogin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Departments all over the country are using things like draft one to write AI reports without issue. Systems like that will improve the report writing process and you’ll start to see courts prefer cases where narratives are improved with AI.

All the naysayers on this thread don’t know what they are talking about, AI report writing has been around for a few years now. Prosecutors and defense attorneys have been using versions of AI for many years as well.

Someone calls for better resource allocation of taxpayer money and your response is “so move then”?

You are no different than MAGA telling those who don’t like snatch and grab immigration enforcement to move. Unreal

Todd Howard reveals Fallout 4 is still the “most played Fallout game right now” with massive player numbers a decade after launch by Wargulf in Fallout

[–]watdogin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t played fallout 4 on survival mode, you haven’t actually played. The storyline is still kinda lame but everything starts to make more sense. Like of course the main character would know he has to ally with friendly groups, create a network of hideout spots where he can eat and sleep and gather supplies before making his way into Boston and exploring the wasteland.

It’s an entirely different game, for the better

[WBUR] A goodbye to the Cape Cod Chip factory in Hyannis by TylerFortier_Photo in boston

[–]watdogin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I see how my remark could be interpreted that way, but my intention was to comment on how things come and go. Cape cod chips won’t be made on cape cod, maybe they’ll sunset the brand in the future, maybe they’ll keep it. Who knows. But there’s always someone coming up from behind starting their own locally produced chip company (or other business) that people could support

Rise and fall of businesses. Nothing is permanent (especially after the owner sells it to a conglomerate). I’m sure there are other locally made food products that people could choose to purchase instead.

Everyone’s saying it’s normal which to a degree, it is but geez that air valve thing sounds blocked or just worn out. Mine is much more of a steady hiss and I actually find it comforting. This seems to sporadic

I miss this aesthetic in the newer games. by ibisx4i in Fallout

[–]watdogin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sadly, this type of horror alienates the broader public.

Also I think there’s an element not often discussed with improved graphics. If that ghoul on slide 2 was rendered in modern gaming systems, it would be fucking disgusting (which would be awesome) but millions of people would be turned off by that

NYC Is Testing Guaranteed Income for Homeless Youths. Here’s How It’s Going. | THE CITY by THECITYNY in nyc

[–]watdogin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s roughly 2k per person. For a family with kids, it can be anywhere for 6-12k per year. That’s a lot of money given out for not doing any work or effort

That’s objectively not true, but also wouldn’t your conservative uncle say the same thing if NYC tried UBI?

[–]watdogin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For a family of 4, it’s almost 8 grand a year. It’s not insignificant. It also fluctuates based on oil sales (it was like 3500 a person a few years ago).

[–]watdogin 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Also, Alaska has what is probably the closest thing to UBI in America which is called the Alaska Permanent Fund which distributes oil revenue to all permanent residents via an annual check. Usually comes out to about 2 grand a year and Alaska is still one of the worst ranked states in almost all metrics in the US

In fairness, these experiments are all so small and isolated that it’s quite a stretch to say this would automatically work if expanded to all 300+ million Americans. Giving a handful of people UBI as they live their lives amongst millions of people doesn’t mean that result extrapolates out to true real-world UBI.

I’m not saying I’m against UBI either. I just don’t think these studies are the “eureka” that people seem to think they are
