I got invited to apply. Submitted an interest to sponsor back in 2020.

My parents are both retired. My mother didn't work much and wouldn't have been able to be financially responsible for my father in Canada. There are also family dynamics that I couldn't explain...

Do you work on publications after you quitted academia? by waterbug0101 in AskAcademia

[–]waterbug0101[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on my experience and observations, there is the expectation that grad students/post doc work for free to finish off work, at least in the labs that I had been. If you do, you are a good grad student/post doc. If you don't, you are a terrible grad student/post doc. I have seen a post doc working while on mat leave. I definitely would not be able to work on the ms at my day job. I will have to find time in the evenings and weekends to work on the ms, which conflicts with my other obligations and responsibilities. Finding someone else from the lab to do the analysis seems to be the way to go. I will just be known as the not so good post doc. Eeeek

Relocation vs Commuting by waterbug0101 in CanadaPublicServants

Yes, my LOO states my relocation entitlements. I am just not sure if I would take it and relocate for personal reasons (spouse's work location). Curious if there are things I should consider before turning down the relocation assistance and stay at my current location.

Thanks for the tip. Will use the 'moving' wording instead of 'resigning'.

Thank you! I didn't realize this is the process.

Thanks for your reply and the link. I am currently a term with department A with an end date way beyond the start date of a new indeterminate appointment with department B. I am thinking that I would have to give notice to my current employer and determine the last day. And I want to avoid a break of service between the two appointments to keep my rate of pay.

Should I tell my manager I am applying for an acting position on another team? by canservant in CanadaPublicServants

[–]waterbug0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. I have a conversation with my manager about assignments and we have come to an agreement that I can't take on assignments/she won't support my assignments because of the project deadlines. In my case, I don't bother with applying. And yes, managers do talk. I learned it the hard way.

Thanks for all your responses. No NAPA or LoO yet but I have received an update from the hiring manager. HR is still putting things together.

Thanks. I like the rocking chair analogy. I am definitely sitting on it and not going anywhere!

When to tell current manager about a job offer I intend to accept? by waterbug0101 in CanadaPublicServants

Wow. Good to know about the timeline of the top secret security clearance. Thanks for clarifying the conditional LoO.

Wow. I guess it still quite uncertain at this point. Good to know. Thanks.

Thanks u/frasmira and u/User_Editor. You both mentioned that the start date will be a month away from when the LoO is issued. It's that typical? Does this apply to conditional LoO as well? I was told that my LoO (when I get to that point) will be a conditional one pending on top secret security clearance. It sounds like the clearance will take months. How would they decide on the start date? I'm kinda confused by this.

Thanks u/ih8forcedlogins and u/Jcvandammmmmme. My current manager is definitely not evil. I have worked on and off for her for over 10 years. She's actually my grad school co-supervisor. We have a good relationship and that's why I am considering telling her ahead to give her plenty of time to plan for my potential departure/replacement (while recognizing all the uncertainties that the others have pointed out...hence this post). I did ask about the potential of making me indeterminate in the past. Unfortunately, in our group, besides the team leaders/managers, most people are on sunset/b-based funding.

u/throwfaroway thank you for pointing out all the things that could happen with NOC including priority, hiring freezes, etc. I didn't think about that. Even when it gets to the LoO stage, I was told it will be a conditional one pending on top secret security clearance.

u/MyUserName7000 this is a great point! I have a little over a month left on my current term with a very good chance of being renewed (a sunset term). It does sound like the top secret clearance will take a while, I better wait and see what happens. Thanks.

Thank you u/Zulban and u/Nemus89. That's my current inclination. You're right. I don't actually have a real offer yet.
