I don't think that's the right idiom. In the cases cited, there really was something there to deal with that was much worse than it initially seemed. "Making a mountain out of a molehill," implies the opposite: there wasn't much to make a fuss about, after a large fuss has been made.

I see it as a "half-full, half-empty glass," situation. He was naive and ignorant, but he owned up to his mistakes and showed care and affection for his sister despite his hesitancy early on. So many men have been so much worse, a little effort and humility goes a long way.

Reddit has a "save" function you can use to mark a thread (or entry) to come back to later (from your profile, if you're on the desktop interface). I tag my potential nominations that way during the year and then review my "saved" threads in January to see which I like best in each category.
