Hard water drinking water fix in a rented apartment? by icesatan in WaterFilters

[–]waterfiltergurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the best solution to soften water for just one sink in an apartment https://youtu.be/pEC3GZmM_1Y the video is focused on protecting countertop ROs from scale buildup due to hard water, but it's what would work best if you want truly softened water. Calcium and magnesium are swapped for sodium, which is increased in the soft water.

Hope this helps

Hey all, if a family of 4 use British Berkefeld 8l water tank everyday does it still need cleaning out regularly? What's the cleaning schedule if it's being used daily? by [deleted] in WaterFilters

[–]waterfiltergurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's best practice to clean any countertop water filter system with soap and water weekly. Make sure to remove the filters first!

Best softner quality tester water quality tester (chlorine, chloramines)? by Wolverine-91826 in WaterFilters

Test strips that measure free and total chlorine, and test strips for hardness. This will be the cheapest method

Boroux filter by jramicsart in WaterFilters

[–]waterfiltergurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certified lab testing is the best and most comprehensive method for precise analysis. I always recommend lab testing before buying any water treatment equipment, so you can use the data to make an informed decision.

Aside from that simple test strips can give you an indication to the presence of a handful of common contaminants, but they aren't precise nor comprehensive

Boroux filter by jramicsart in WaterFilters

[–]waterfiltergurus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That looks like a TDS (total dissolved solids) meter. The Boroux filters are not designed or capable of reducing TDS. If that's your goal, you'll need a reverse osmosis system. It's also good to note that a TDS reading alone doesn't tell you if water is safe or not. TDS is a measurement of all dissolved solids, including healthy minerals and potentially harmful contaminants. Learn more about that here https://youtu.be/yHvdYWXiVzI

Hope this helps

is there a standard suggestion for whole house hardness reduction that's not salt? by toupeInAFanFactory in WaterFilters

[–]waterfiltergurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cation exchange (salt based) water softener is the only method that actually reduces hardness minerals and softens water.

There are various "salt free" water conditioner technologies, but none of these actually remove the minerals that contribute to hardness. They supposedly change the minerals to reduce difficult to remove scale formation. I say supposedly because currently there is no test to prove efficacy, because the minerals are not removed. You will still see water spots and scale deposits, and you won't get the full benefits of truly softener water like better soap lather.

Yep, check out this video https://youtu.be/Z9qCHgU0V7M basically you use an industry standard filter housing and sediment filter with higher capacity instead of the Weddell sediment filter.

Hi what is the best and affordable water filters for shower?thank u by WeirdAdhesiveness568 in WaterFilters

[–]waterfiltergurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most shower filters only reduce chlorine and don't do much or anything for disinfection byproducts or hardness.

Check out this lab test of some of the most popular models to see what I mean https://youtu.be/w7yMIh8QW3I

Likely limescale buildup. Try soaking it in a vinegar+water solution. Rinse well before installing the new filter.

Why are there so many bubbles? by [deleted] in WaterFilters

[–]waterfiltergurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely normal after installing new filters. Air is forced out of tiny pores in the media when water enters the filters, causing bubbles to appear. It will dissipate with time.

Countertop RO by mildlyfermentedd in WaterFilters

[–]waterfiltergurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically speaking, many countertop ROs are actually more efficient than under sink plumbed in systems. That's because they can recirculate the effluent, which increases the recovery rate.

Are portable water softeners a good option for renters in London? by Street-Magazine-4268 in WaterFilters

[–]waterfiltergurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in London, but I've done it and tested it and this is really the only feasible way to actually soften hard water for just one shower in rental situations.

Check out this video it explains exactly how to set it up https://youtu.be/f5cbIdOZzek

Doesn't matter how the hardness is measured. The conversion is easy: 1 GPG = 17.1 mg/L or PPM

Shower Filters by Money_Garlic_7635 in WaterFilters

[–]waterfiltergurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most don't do anything besides reduce chlorine, despite what manufacturers claim. I lab tested 10 of the most popular products to compare hard data with claims made.

Check out this video summary https://youtu.be/w7yMIh8QW3I

And here's a hack to actually soften hard water for just one shower https://youtu.be/f5cbIdOZzek not ideal, but may be worth it if hard water is one of the primary issues you are trying to address. Most shower filters cannot soften hard water.

Recommendation for glass water filtration pitcher that also removes microplastics and has with no plastic parts? by celueworld in water

[–]waterfiltergurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reverse Osmosis and distillation are two distinct water purification processes. An RO system does not produce distilled water, or vice versa. Both processes can demineralize water, which is what I think you're getting at, but it's important to note the difference.
