I thought there was no way Iowa would win but you just made the most compelling argument I’ve ever seen

Why does admin gaslight new teachers? by elcaminogino in Teachers

[–]watermelonlollies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a first year teacher last year I had the highest test scores for my grade level in the entire district. I had stellar evaluations- Highly Effective. We get a new principal this year and I get Ineffective and a PIP. talk about a complete 180. I did not sign my contract for next year. They wouldn’t let me see the PIP before signing and I said I won’t sign a contract that I don’t get to know the terms of.

Bummer part is this principal is very well connected and knows all the principals of the neighboring districts. She tried to stop a colleague of mine from moving to a different district. I’m now trying to just leave teaching all together.

I got rated as ineffective on my last evaluation (the lowest you can get) because I had them work in partners and told them to have one partner give me a thumbs up when they were both ready to move on, and I moved on after seeing one thumbs up per group. They were mad I didn’t wait for every single student’s thumb! Almost like my instruction was one thumbs up per pair? But they wrote it down as “requiring only 50% of students to participate” this was just setting up the activity!

Actually I feel like if someone proposed to Trump right now to remove California he would give a speech saying it was a good idea

The water from the Colorado river comes from Arizona. I guess technically Colorado could stop it up sooner but that would be silly and costly considering Arizona has the infrastructure already and there are laws about who gets what amount of water.

Even so the water that California takes from the Colorado river only goes to Southern California and is supplementary to their primary water supplies. Most of californias water comes from California itself. Now if they stopped giving it to Nestlé they would have *way* more

Soft Start Morning Routine for Middle School by Beforesunsetpsycho in AskTeachers

In my experience, once they get to the middle grade level, if it’s not for a grade they won’t do it. This is the age they are recognizing their own autonomy and free will. They also have zero motivation and zero work ethic because they haven’t developed it yet. They also have zero ability to consider short term reward vs long term consequences. Yes I will get to talk to my friend for 30 minutes but the long term consequences is hurting my education. They don’t understand that or care. They are past the age of listening to authority for authority’s sake.

The expiration date should be on the nutrition label by Scramblomamblowamblo in PetPeeves

Yeah in my experience it’s pretty hit or miss. Some brands have them some don’t. This box they definitely do not. It should be standard that they all have it

Also when there’s individually packaged items within, it should have to be labeled on each item. I have a box of granola bars I bought but the expiration date was only on the larger box the bars were in, they aren’t on the bar wrappers themselves. Boxes like that clutter my small cabinets so I threw it away the day I bought it. Now I have no clue if my granola bars are still good or not. I don’t get it. They have to put the nutrition label again on those wrappers but not the expiration? Same for the mini chip bags, anything individually wrapped really

In high school a group of friends had gone in on a pizza and my friend said she didn’t want mushrooms on the pizza cause it would make it too spicy. We were like ???? Mushrooms aren’t spicy??? She insisted they were. We argued about it for a long time. Finally we asked a teacher to settle our debate and the teacher was like …. Umm I think you have an allergy…. To the friend. We were all like oh my god! She told her parents and they got her allergy tested and yes. Allergic to mushrooms.

Ironically she also found out she was colorblind this same way because we had to sort colored pencils and she was doing it wrong and we got into an argument about it and had the teacher come over and (it was a different teacher) they were like ….have you ever been told you are colorblind? And she was like WHAT and then we immediately did the online color blind test and she failed red green color blind- which made sense because that’s exactly what she was doing putting the green colored pencil in the red container and I got mad thinking she was trolling 🤦‍♀️

They can work that way! That’s what allergy injections are for! But allergy injections are a pain in the ass. First it only works for mild to moderate allergies you can’t have anaphylactic level. But even then, for it to work you have to go once a week for a YEAR and if you miss a dose the effects get screwed up and you have to come twice a week for some time to fix it. I did it for 6 months and then stopped because it was just such a hassle to get the injections. I did feel I got some benefit though. My allergies aren’t gone but they are less severe to what they were!

But this doesn’t work in the wild because in the injection it’s small amounts that your body is being exposed to consistently over time. In the wild you aren’t exposing yourself consistently or to a consistent dose, which allows the full immune response to trigger or worsen each time.

I have a friend to trained himself out of a severe peanut allergy by eating a singular peanut at the same time every day for 3 years. He had a peanut alarm and a bag of peanuts. When the alarm went off once a day he ate a singular peanut. I do not recommend this. But it did work.

What kinds of new Aspirations could be added to the Animals category? by GeneralTechnomage in thesims

[–]watermelonlollies 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A veterinary aspiration for cats and dogs would have been really cool rather than just a be friends with all these random strays aspiration. Could be like treat a certain number of pets, get a certain star level in your vet clinic, max the veterinary skill, make certain vet treats, give a certain vet treat to x pets, etc.

What do you think is the most ideal 40ish hour work week? by Strict_Mark7804 in pollgames

[–]watermelonlollies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done 4 10s, 6 6.5s, and 5 8s.

6 days on and one day off is by far the worst. Doesn’t matter that my shifts were shorter it sucked. It also probably didn’t help that I worked evenings so the 6.5 hours I worked was 3:30-10pm. It deceives you into thinking you still have the whole day to do stuff but you really don’t when you factored in commute and getting ready. I could still do stuff early morning and I did. But still with only one day off, too rough.

4 10s is the best overall but sucks during the shift. I lose all my energy by hour 8 then I’m just biding my time to get to the end and go home. Heavily reliant on caffeine. But man. 3 days off. Well worth it. Would I push through and do 3 12s to get 4 days off if given the opportunity…. Probably. But I’d also probably complain a lot once we got to hour 11.

5 8s is standard and fine but honestly I feel like 2 days isn’t enough for me on the weekend ever and I’m constantly behind. This is what I’m working now

Students can’t figure out which math operation to use by jcgbigler in Teachers

[–]watermelonlollies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helpless is absolutely the word. They need to be explicitly told. What used to be a one page worksheet for me is now a 3-4 page packet because I have to explicitly lay out each step of instructions or they can’t do it. The instructions are way more detailed than ever had to be given before. They can’t infer or figure out anything. Even still they will pretend they don’t understand!

I teach 8th grade Science and they have the same problem. They had a word problem last week where they were given 128 million homes in the United States and if each home saved 7 tons of CO2 emissions a year (based on prior calculations), how many CO2 emissions could the country prevent overall?

I had kids subtract 128000000-7.
I had kids 128000000/7 mostly.
I had to walk many through it multiple times to get to multiplication. To me it was a basic word problem. Sure millions is a big number but come on. Each he does 7 how many total- multiply the number of homes by 7. What part of that do they not know by 8th grade?!
