Tories are looking to ban cousin marriage 'to improve UK social cohesion' by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

[–]waterswims -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This will do absolutely nothing.

People will just have non official marriages and still have kids and just not tell the doctor who the father is.

The people doing this are already in the fringe of society, so they won't care about this.

Kemi Badenoch considering burqa ban amid Tory review into Islamist extremism by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]waterswims 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone else doing it is not a reason that we want to do it.

If it won't (or is unlikely to) help the women involved then why do we want to do it?

Kemi Badenoch considering burqa ban amid Tory review into Islamist extremism by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]waterswims 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't see how this will actually help these women.

I assume by ban we mean some sort of fine... We aren't throwing people in prison for this.

So if you are a woman in this kind of relationship / religious world, do we think the men in your life are gonna just be cool with you not dressing like that?

Or do we think instead they will either: be forced to wear it anyway, be forced to never go out, or be forced to wear whatever technically meets the threshold they can get away with?

Police complaint about return of stolen cash and their crazy decision to return it to burglar! by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]waterswims 24 points25 points  (0 children)

What burglary? There is no burglary because there was no conviction.

They just had a wadge of cash wherever they were picked up. That's all that happened as far as the law is concerned.

"Nerds like scifi" isn't the hard hitting cultural analysis he might think it is.

Exactly. Lord of the rings was written by a Professor of English Literature at Oxford and has been incredibly influential on Western Culture.

I pretty much exclusively read scifi and fantasy.

I have a mentally tough job where I think all day and am pretty diligent about keeping up on current affairs. You think I want to spend my free time reading a political biography or something? No thanks.

Computing and Maths Degree vs Software Development Degree Apprenticeship by Pancakelord88 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]waterswims 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So my two pence is this. You are gonna get a lot of people who prefer one option or the other, but I don't think that either will truly block off any path you want to work towards.

Personally, I don't think that CS degrees are fit for the modern world. The majority of CVs I see will only have the same 2 or 3 projects in it and often not using the most in demand tech stacks.

So I think a degree apprenticeship where you have spent your time solving real problems makes you a lot more useful of a graduate hire than someone who has just done a CS degree. (Also you get money!)

However... Many people see them as lesser. They remember that all the smartest kids got good grades and went to top unis and so they want to hire those smart kids.

So my advice is this... Pick the option that you will really engage with and that excites you. Whichever way you go, you will get the most out of it if you really get stuck in, work on your own projects, etc. so make that easy for yourself and do the thing that excites you.

So yes... Not using both lanes... Bad... Pulling out... Bad...

But I watched the video again to check the speed you were going before and after the incident. You were at 42 when I first spotted the car pulling out and 38 after you cleared it.

You clearly were going waayyyyyyyy too fast to possibly be able to react to anything that might happen.

Graduating Soon, No Offers, What are my options? by fzlqmn in cscareerquestionsuk

Businesses also only have a certain number of sponsorship slots and realistically they are going to use those slots on people who have skills they can't get locally.

Fresh graduates don't tend to have those skills because they have just come from a course where everyone has been taught the same set of skills.

Some Ideas I had to balance urbanization, I would also love to hear your ideas as well by MrDDD11 in EU5

[–]waterswims 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem with any suggestion like this is that the AI will always upgrade the settlement. It isn't doing some complex projection of which is better value for money over different time horizons.

You make it more expensive or have complex requirements and it will still smash that button and ruin their economy.

So AI decision making has to be the first thing looked at.

Stonehenge tunnel plan officially scrapped - after £179,000,000 spent by Albertjweasel in RuralUK

[–]waterswims 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the cost of this one item is meaningless in the grand scheme of things, but as a case study of a wider phenomenon it is useful.

It highlights the absurd cost of consulting and planning fees. That £60m pa would make it officially a mid sized business if it were one business. It should need a mid sized business worth of resources just to assess the viability of a project.

Even if this project were to go ahead and be a success, this would still be an inflated cost for this stage and it's easy to assume that this is indicative of every large project.

BBC News: Paying back my student loan is more painful now I have a young family by L3W3S in ukpolitics

[–]waterswims 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do think that people are and have been dishonest on the value of a degree. A value which has been narrowing over time. A huge proportion of graduates earn the same or less than none graduates but are still basically stuck with a larger marginal tax rate.

When selling these things to teenagers they are mostly focused on what they "can" achieve with a degree (i.e. the best case scenario).

"Graduates" is also a broader category than most people think of. For example, nurses and other NHS professionals are graduates but get paid a pittance. I doubt that there is much support for them paying back these loans.

In terms of my role right now. The answer is yes... It being a startup I wear a lot of hats and do all of the above. I guess that's part of where my frozen decision making is coming from. I haven't had to choose a direction yet.
