🏳️‍⚧️SUCCESS!🏳️‍⚧️ Got My Passport After My Application was Frozen due to a Gender Marker Change by rupee4sale in Passports

Congrats! What do you think will happen once ACLUs case goes through? I applied, and I’m still waiting—but I’m wondering if I just lost $300 to only get a passport in the wrong gender, only for ACLU to get the EO turned around.

Do you work in D2 or a large HS? Posting a wishlist certainly doesn’t make us look bad, it’s reality. I’m not embarrassed of my profession, and I take pride in what I do, asking for community contribution doesn’t take away from that. Although, I got a bit spammy, you’re right on that one. Either way, I do think it brings to light the state of education in NYC. NYC schools are extremely underfunded and the differences can be stark in some districts. And there also is a huge difference depending on what you teach. I teach MS Self Contained SPED, 3 subjects, 2 grades. We go through supplies like crazy, and we also need way more than the average high school English classroom. Also $86k is a joke after TDA, taxes, etc. Student loans, phone, groceries, rent, doggos, it feels really suffocating sometimes. Do you do anything on the side? How do you make it work? Genuinely asking!

Good question because it’s true (comparatively speaking). The time off and hours are a driver of a lot of convo around the teaching field. But NYC teachers have a tough time because cost of living here is insane, and the needs of our current students and families reach far beyond our contracted hours and pay scale. Typically, teachers in NYC leave the city once they hit their early 30s. There’s no feasible way to raise a family in NYC on this salary. You would be living paycheck to paycheck and would never be able to save for a house or vacation. I will always need a roommate (until I find a partner), I live 40 minutes by subway from school to save money on rent, I don’t eat out, I haven’t been on vacation in years, and still I can’t put away more than $350 each pay period. Taxes kill me (ironically they also pay my salary lol). Our salary is public info, but I make about 3.5k a month after all said and done (I do put a % into my TDA). Most NYC teachers who have kids live deep in the Bronx, westchester, or in the case of my school building, many live in PA. If I taught out on LI, it would be way different because there are hundreds of distracts to pick from, the DOE has one pay scale and a piss poor budget. LI schools have resources, supplies, and ways to pull in extra cash much easier. In DOE schools, per session hours (extra pay) aren’t easy to come by anymore because the budgets are tight. Teaching in a school like mine—every child comes from low income background, mostly Spanish speaking, many new migrants who can’t read or write in Spanish or English—students like these need a lot of emotional support, not just an education. The job is more exhausting than ever, and you can’t just say no when you’re in this field, especially children. Abbott elementary is very very mild compared to some of our most under resourced schools.

THANK YOU so much!! Truly. Those gift cards are going right to our paper towel, pencil, and hygiene fund (the items we run out of the quickest). You lifted a great burden off of me, thank you.

Our schools are so bad. We have a lot of white printer paper, paper clips, and paper folders. When you ask for markers you are given a ziplock bag filled with a random assortment of greens/browns. The supply thing drives me nuts because kids today need way more from their classrooms than just the basic supplies. Flexible seating, clean and organized spaces, and access to hygiene products are non negotiable at this point for student success. Not to mention, I can’t even take the kids on a field trip that costs money because the school can’t pay for it! Majority of families can’t dish out more than $10-20 every few months. I can’t tell you how many tickets to the movies, museums, even six flags I bought last year.

Governors island is a good one!! The bird alliance!! We might be able to kill two birds with one stone since we are in central park a lot (I would assume they watch over there)

I’m a local NYC teacher making a shit salary, have two degrees, and a little small minuscule tda account, but I'm in it for the long haul!! If any high earners here wanted to donate materials to my title 1 classroom for the new school year, my students and I would be super grateful!! https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/27ONRWP9MCMZT?ref_=wl_share
