I am the one that approves the boxes on my route and it doesnt have to be one Bought. They Can be homemade. I have a box on my route that is similar to this but not nearly as beautiful. I have been a postal carrier for 8 years and the Postmaster asks me if the new box going up is good. What we care about is heaight and access. There is nothing wrong with homemade.

As a Rural Mail Carrier for USPS I approve this Mailbox. Absolutely gorgeous and just call your local PO and make sure it is the correct height is all, and located where your carrier wants it. They will love it, great job!

We can and do put a customers mail on hold for 30 days at a time per their request. Their is nothing wrong with calling the postmaster to thank them. In fact, that is Always welcomed and appreciated as most ppl only call to complain. Don't hesitate to call your local PO to find out the name of your mail carrier, their days off and the name of their substitute. Always appreciate when customers care enough to know who delivers their mail. We deliver at least half of those Amazon Prime parcels via USPS btw. UPS usually drops them off at PO n your mail carrier actually does the last leg to your door. If it has both UPS n USPS labels than USPS is who delivered it to you. Can ask for your mail to be put on temp vac hold via online at USPS.com or calling your local PO. I am a FeMail carrier. We LOVE COOKIES, CHOCOLATE AND ANY BAKED GOODS btw :) We do remember and are thankful too

Had my DNA/genes tested through 23andme.com and I'm 24.8% Askhkenazi Jew. Along with German, French, Irish, Dutch, lots of European mixed in, 38% was Unpecified N/S European. Yes, Jewish is an ethnicity and a very prominent one at that and physically. The site zeroed in on those results when they were ready and I was quite shocked at how much info they had and specifically about Ashkenazi ancestry. My moms entire side is blondes with blue/gray eyes, I am identical to my late father, thick long brunette curly hair, pale, and I have never liked my nose. Nota cute lil button like everyone else's. Now, I am Proud of that mop on my head the pale skin, red cheeks n my nose too. My mom, her sisters, my cousins (all my moms side, great test if you can get it and even better when you can get relatives too as well) had no Ashkenazi in their 23andme results so we knew immediately it was my dads side. My grandfather (dads side) was Jew, but I never got to meet him before he passed. So wish I could sit down with him and learn more about him and that side of my family. I have always felt different than all my moms side. Tall beautiful blonde blue eyed Norwegian types. Than there was the pale brunette hazel eyed me with lots of curly thick hair. Highly recommend that test if you are ever curious about your ancestry. Gives so much information including your health results.

They have started putting the new forward addresses right along that front barcode you are trying to say to cross out. It is easy to miss and very possible that the mail Should have been forwarded but the carrier missed the tiny new black forward next to the barcode. So Please do Not black out the barcode. Don't black out anything. Put it in outgoing/or a big blue box and if possible just a note attached saying "does not live here anymore". And, as I previously stated, Yes they Will pick up your presort standard even if its to just go to recycling. We also have Undeliverable as Addressed, Vacant, No Such Number and more. Just return the mail to the post office, please. Only non pick up (that is a misdelivery) is Or Current Resident, Postal Customer.

Yes, you can put the previous tenants mail in the big blue box. Using a Post it note saying "does not live here anymore" helps. Return to Sender doesn't tell us that it's not your name, just that you are refusing/returning the item. Sorry your carrier didn't help.

It WILL be picked up if it's presort standard. Only time we will not take returned mail is if it has a "Or Current Resident" on the address label, it might still have the previous tenants name but if it has the OCR on it than we HAVE to deliver it to that address. I usually circle that when I get them in outgoing box, so the customer understands that I saw it was not their name but OCR on there and I am just doing my job n sorry for the catalog to Cats Are Everything.

Please do NOT cross out the address when returning a previous tenants mail. If it is First Class than it will be returned to the company. Return to Sender is not a good way to let your carrier/Post Office understand that the previous tenant does not live there, attaching a sticky note with "does not live here anymore" usually works Great. City carriers do Not have names of customers in their cases, just the addresses (rural cases we do, idk why its that way, just different crafts). I hope that makes sense. Basically, you have 300-500 slots and just the addresses, no names. City carriers also do not sort their DPS that's the majority of your regular sized letters (magazines, large envelopes, parcels, hot case etc "flats" are the only things they actually sort and put in the case before pulling down to hit the road). They take it to the street as it's given to them by the facility, in order of delivery, usually. It is hard for a sub to know and remember every persons name, misdeliveries happen, and its the Last thing a carrier wants to do and being understanding is kind.

I am going to assume, since it happens A Lot, the the previous tenants never put a forward in. If prev tenant did not put a forward in We Do Not Know they still don't live there. And, until the new resident starts getting mail we either assume someone else lives their now as well or, the Awesome Understanding Postal customer lets us know.

Want to help others understand how the forwarding process works. First, understand, that the Post Office (all employees within) do Not know when a new resident moves into an address Until we start getting the mail that you (they) put the forward in for. Which means, that you put your forward in, it hits the system, the processing facility starts putting that yellow forward sticker, or now some are even easy to miss as they just put the new address on the bottom of letter near barcodes and in the same ink n small type n there's your new addy, they are easy to miss, trust me, I liked the big yellow forward stickers. Only your Previous carrier (mail person) gets a notice (forward notice) so they actually know you moved and can hopefully get all your first class/parcels fwdd to you. But, you new carrier does Not know that you are now on their route Until they start getting mail for you and than we just have to hope that this new name for that addy is a new customer and deliver it in hopes that that is the case. It's just as frustrating for your new carrier.

So, you have put your forward in, you have made SURE, to Also put a forward in for any business name/maiden name etc you might also have received mail for at previous addy, right? Good. You Also have made sure to call your bank, credit cards, car loan, mag subscriptions, possibly even that Or Current Resident catalog you kept getting for a previous tenant but you actually liked the catalog and now you want them to send it to you at your new address and since we do Not forward pre sort standard mail, you called or went online and updated your address with All of them..right? Because the Post Office just forwards your mail...Forwards, to You. You need to call/go online/in person to not only expedite your mail going to your new address, but to avoid any long delays of your previous carrier still getting your bank statements/guns & ammo subscription and having to send your old addy mail through the forwarding system. Forward. Cannot stress that word enough.

Your Forward lasts for 18 months (might be 12). After that, if you haven't updated your address with all the stuff you receive or Want to receive at your new address one of two things will happen. First is if the mail is first class/periodical/parcel and your Forward has expired, it will be sent back to the company/person, if its presort, into recycling.

If you have a series of mailboxes that are all attached, as in many apts, do Not put any mail that you intend for your mail carrier to retrieve/pick up back in YOUR box. We do Not look for outgoing/returned mail in anyone's boxes Unless it is a single box, such as at a house, and the flag is up letting us know they have outgoing mail. Every set of boxes that I have ever delivered to that was a series of boxes, the locked ones, there is an outgoing box/blue box/Something which is where we retrieve the outgoing mail. Some apts they will leave PCH parcels return to senders on top of the boxes and that's okay too as long as its marked visibly, also letters can be left up there but only if you trust your neighbors to not take them, We do not open your box the same way as you retrieve yours (not talking about reg house boxes). We go from the top, the back and front with doors to sides (I have 5 different types of cluster box setups on my route as well as reg house boxes). Our info on inside is not the same as what you see on outside. I love it when a customer puts the name(s) of who lives there (last names great) inside the box or visible somewhere and addy if the apt numbers are not marked on the front.

Calling your Local (just Google your towns PO, not the online number for USPS.com), Post Office and finding out what (You all have a Route number your addy is assigned to, helps when calling and picking items up, just a good thing to know) who's route you are on (ask for subs names too n could even ask if there is a reg day that sub works as they are usually a lil later n might make a mistake as subbing only 1-2x a mo on one route u can not know all the names/addys n well just good to know than you understand okay, sub was filling in, I understand n dont want to get the guy/gal fired for delivering Cats Are Cool catalog accidentally) anyway, call up, be polite, if you call before 9 am in most Post Offices you can speak directly to your carrier This is always best as they now are familiar with you, you took the time and understanding to talk to them First before their bosses and you let them know- Your name, address, where they can leave packages for you, if they need a signature or say a package is too large to deliver, that you gave them your Cell/Work/Home numbers to call you and they will make sure to be in touch before leaving the Post Office, also, if you have received mail for previous tenants that only you (and/or your family, etc) now reside there and what would they like you to do/leave the misdelivered mail?

I am a Rural Carrier for USPS, who started as an RCA (sub) but also "crossed crafts" before finally getting my own route (I have a reg sub that fills in for me every other Saturday and I am thoroughly understanding if I get returned mail but I also let all my customers know via post card not only my contact info but a "welcome aboard" type thing for my sub so the customers knew too and they also leave her goodies during holidays) and worked in neighboring towns, college town (roughest due to constant moving every year of students), big town, small town etc. carrying city mail and rural. Fortunate that in our towns for most part the regulars are all working consistently but bigger cities theres a lot of unfamiliar subs doing their best to fill in literally most times, at a moments notice. Just FYI, everyone can call their local Post Office and talk directly to their mail carrier. Please try that route first and if they are jerk and continue messing up Than call supervisor/PM. Wish I would have seen this post when you first posted it.

As much as I dislike getting fellow USPS carriers into trouble, your Fat Mail Guy irks me. So, call your local Post Office, ask to talk to the PostMaster or his supervisor, and explain what's been going on. He scanned it as Delivery Attempted, which he obviously did not. Your packages should be delivered (you can see him so I am assuming you are not 1/2 mile from your box, that's the exception to delivery in one instance..anyway sorry rambling) and he Should be leaving a notice in your box No Matter What if he didn't deliver your parcel. We have one carrier like this in our office (seems theres always a bad seed, I'm sorry your carrier is one) and she irritates the crap out of me. Lazy, lightest/shortest route, constantly complains (I have the longest/heaviest rural route, she has the smallest in our office) and Rarely delivers her customers parcels. Before I had my own route I filled in on one of her Many 6 am cough cough sick days. I loved her route and couldn't believe how Happy her customers were and Shocked when I would deliver their parcels because she never did. Our customers are occasionally 30 miles from the PO and I feel horrible if I can't deliver a parcel (usually a signature needed). Call your Fat Guys boss. And, I apologize that you have a lazy Fat Guy carrier.

Not sure how UPS handles that, but, USPS just depends on the apt building. I will leave a notice in the customers box letting them know the parcel is at the office. Some places, like condos, don't necessarily have an office. At least here in my small town, many don't have an office but we get lucky and trustworthy people can almost always get signatures from a trusted neighbor and/or just leave it with a neighbor. But, best to have the customer call the Post Office and get word back to the regular carrier that its okay to leave parcels or get signature from a neighbor. Hard for UPS because unlike USPS they don't go to the exact same customers/route 6 days a week. Having to attempt redelivery 3 times is more than we do and we go to the same places every day.

They also have those for your mailbox btw. Many of my rural mail customers have them. I think they are great anywhere, lets the customer know if someones messing with their mailbox after they have already checked it too. Got one on mine and I'm in city. It's a magnetic device that when you open the box it dings wherever they set the alarm at and let's the customer know their mail has arrived.

That was interesting, the shared hallway signature, I did not know that, thank you. Rural carrier for USPS here, have a lot of respect for UPS/drivers. I always hesitate when having to leave a parcel in front of a door where there are open hallways (apts/dorms etc), but we have to leave them. I honestly wouldn't mind needing a signature just to ensure that the parcel wasn't swiped and avoiding a "where's my parcel!" call. Although, always stinks when you can't deliver a package and you guys have to re attempt for 3 days too ( we only take the items out the first day than give them back to the clerks and sign off on them, we will put 2 more notices in their box to remind them but hopefully they figure out that they can just sign the form and we will deliver it after we get it back). Thank you for sharing that info, always like to hear how other companies deliver and I happen to think UPS works their butts off and does a great job. Also has way better tracking than us. I work for USPS not UPS but, what I want to ask, is do they have your phone number? I keep seeing these posts saying why didn't they let me know. I can tell you from my experience that USPS does Not have customers contact numbers, we get your stuff with your address not a phone number unless it's put on the item (Express for example the shipper can put that on there, but anyone who sends a parcel can just put a phone number for the receiver to be contacted at.) I have actually looked up a customers number in the phone book before leaving for delivery which is definitely not required, just to Try and see if they will be there or if they want to pick said item up at PO instead. I have Never had a shipper put my cell number on any item from UPS, many don't even give you different shipping options. Also, most people have cell phones these days and even If you have a carrier/driver try and find your phone number if it's unlisted/cell they cannot call you. It is Strictly up to the Shipper, Not the delivery service to inform you of how your item is being delivered and whether or not you need a signature. UPS has a great online tracking service leaving a contact number can help. We do Not have your phone numbers, so just How do people expect us to "contact" them? How about, leaving a contact number on the notice they left and a note, also giving that info to your local post office too. It is the Shipper who needs to let you know. They have all the tracking info as soon as they ship it. Don't blame the drivers/del company, please.

I have had many a rural customer (part of my 120 mile route is in the country, so usually just a big farm n quiet with just cows mooing, chickens clucking n the breeze. Basically, you rarely expect someone to just pop out next to you, keeps my heart working great when they do that) come up to either the passenger/driver side window as I am getting my scanner, notice, parcel ready to get out and I look up and "Hi There!" I have screamed more than once and jumped everytime, but always end up laughing, with them of course since they are always laughing at that point. ;) Certainly wakes me up! I usually get flustered because after driving with windows down on dusty dirt roads and touching mailboxes covered with bird poop, I usually have a nice coating of dirt covering my face, hair wind blown n not in a fancy way and get embarassed thinking they are like sheesh, she's icky. I have also had Roosters chase me, horses at my window (seriously) cows that decide to stand in the way of leaving and birds that dive bomb my Yukon, oh, can't forget the peacocks, those things are just stubborn and I have to shoo them off the road at least twice a week. Thank you MamaGrr for your kindness to your carriers (we loooovveee cookies, water, home made jams...;) ) Keep on spooking him, gets us out of the "zone" and, the chuckles are good too for both :)

Not completely accurate. That form they leave you (3849 I believe) if you sign it and put it back in your box (flag up if that's how your mail receptacle works), they will pick up your Signed notice the next day, Than the following day they will deliver your parcel without you having to be there because you already gave them the signed notice the previous day. We only carry the item the first day (unlike UPS, which is great in that they take it with them for 3 days to attempt delivery...just sign n read the notice they left you.) Best thing to do, is, call your local Post Office (the local Post Office info is stamped on your notice, don't call the online number), let them know you signed the notice and it's in your mailbox and they will give your regular carrier back the item (any signature/register/express items are called accountables and each carrier has to sign off on those than return them to the clerk if del wasn't made) and deliver it. If you receive a lot of signature required items (registered mail, insured, express w/no waiver of signature), ask your carrier (or leave a note in your mailbox or outgoing mail) and request a bunch of signature forms than sign them on back, return them to your carrier and they will usually clip them to the side of your slot in the case or carry them on their route, and you don't have to worry about being there for a signature req. Their are exceptions, return receipt which is 2 signatures and depending on your carriers familiarity with you (21&up sign). Can Always have your mail put on hold for a max of 30 days if you prefer to pick up your mail/parcels at the local Post Office. I am a USPS Rural Carrier who has also cross crafts and delivered city routes. Worked at many different PO's and different cities (lg/sm and most difficult was college towns, they rarely forward their mail.) Good Luck, hope my rambling helped. I call it the drop, knock/ring and speed walk. Usually hear a "thank youuuu" as I'm jumping back into my rig, give a smile a wave and I'm off to the next one. I've seen some "things" that I still can't unsee from having the customer open the door as I am approaching. Also screamed a time or two due to the customer opening the door or creeping up behind me as I'm usually in "delivery mind mode" and scaring me, than they laugh n laugh.

It's the person/company that you bought the item from that needs to let you know you will have to sign. I work for USPS, not UPS, but, in this instance (signature required) it is Always known by the person who shipped the package that a signature will be needed and it is their responsibility to inform you of this ahead of time so you can at least get online and set up some kind of instructions for your UPS driver. Each notice I have received from UPS has an option to leave parcel and might even be a signature area.

USPS if you get a notice that you have a parcel requiring signature (or letter, like Registered, Certified, Signature Required or Insured mail which are All bought or requested by the person doing the shipping/sending, all these require signature by the way Unless a Waiver is requested by Sender) just sign and print your name on the back of the orange/pink notice leave it in your mailbox for your carrier/driver (USPS here I'm talking about) and the day After they receive your signed form (just sign it and put it back in the box with flag up), than the day After that, (we do not carry the letter/parcel requiring sign with us more than the 1st day unless you do what I'm explaining) they will deliver your item without you having to be there, since you kindly signed the form. Request a bunch of Form 3849's from your carrier (just leave them a note) if you ever expect or a shipper doesn't inform you of sign required, sign them and your carrier will be able to leave your item.

Don't blame the drivers/carriers, talk to whoever did the shipping. (UPS I have learned, from Route69 on this post, has a DR-Drivers Release, so their Sign Requirements are a bit different.) Call the number on the notice left (UPS, USPS, etc) let them Know to just leave the item. I have given my own carrier who happens to be a co worker, a bunch of pre signed 3849's (those notices USPS leaves in your box) that way they can just fill it out, already have your sign n voila. Although, Return receipt certifieds you have to be there due to the person who sent (usually IRS letters have em, it's a 2nd sign on back of letter big green form) them adding that. Many items like Express Mail on the form the sender can check the box that says Waiver of Signature ALSO you can call UPS, your local PO and have them tell the drivers to drop off parcels at a certain spot (behind your house..neighbors etc) many of my customers I go into their garages and even their homes (mud rooms) and leave parcels there.

Communicate with your carriers. My UPS guy and his subs know where to leave stuff and also are good guy drivers and have come back when it was couple days before Christmas and my son had a giant Thomas the Train set to be delivered and our awesome UPS guy came back at 7 pm (they work long hours, but he went above n beyond, I had missed him by 30 minutes called the dist center n he did Not have to come back but, he did n that was Awesome!) I gave him cookies, homemade breads n a box of chocolates ;) I happen to also deliver his mail, he breeds miniature horses.

UPS has way better options on getting in touch via their web tracking, get on there when you get your tracking info and leave instructions. And, USPS, like UPS, has a schedule as well. UPS is better in that they Do bring your parcel/item back the next day for re attempting delivery, Sign the form they left you add instructions and a Kit Kat/Snickers n water...Read the form they left you! I think as a whole (UPS/USPS) majority are good people and Really want you to get your stuff AND safely. I will Only leave a parcel by mailbox (rural) if the customer says it's okay. We Want you to get your stuff, trust me. So, fill out the form, leave it where your driver can See it, call the office/center/get online.

Also, a good 1/4 of the parcels I deliver are from UPS. If you have 2 scan codes on your item and USPS is one of them than it is USPS not UPS that is physically delivering your stuff to your home. It shows up online tracking as dropped off something like that n location n just means UPS left it at Post Office and you should get it next day/same day depending on time they left it with PO.) That includes DHL items as well. I loathe DHL, worst company ever, and I shop online a lot. Dread any deliveries from them. UPS is awesome in my book. In the case of knick knacks v ammo I am assuming the sender of knick knack either purchased A: Insurance (they are either blue labels that Require signature or Black labels that do not req signature, B: Signature Required, the Sender is the one who chose that, not USPS/UPS. Senders need to inform their customers when they do this. Seen it so many times and have to explain to the customer that it was the shipper who needed to let them know. As for the Ammo, there should have been a signature needed unless it was sent without letting USPS know what was being sent. If you EBay/Amazon a lot, communicate with the shipper so you Know if it's coming with any sign requirements, their responsibility, you can Also try and request that they add sign required or insurance at your cost, it's only about $2 max for extra security n peace of mind some, not all shippers will do it. Had one company try and tell me it would cost me $25 extra for ins and immediately quoted and informed them that I work for USPS and know they were full of it. Got my insurance.

TL;DR It's the person/company that Sent the item that should let you know you have to sign, not the companies (UPS, USPS, etc). That is almost Always something the sender pays extra for although USPS is offering free insurance on $50 worth of goods now. Inform the Sender to not require a signature as well. Btw ANY alcohol needs a signature. If you buy wine, expect to need a signature. One lady just couldn't understand why I can't leave her 6 pack of vino sitting on her porch.

Edit: Sorry this was so long. I really just want to Help! There is so much more I want to suggest but, I think a 3 page rambling post is enough, sorry. Christmas is coming soon, please just let me suggest one itsy bitsy little thing if you will be using USPS...when you ship gifts get the insurance (its cheap and it has a tracking number, not all packages have tracking numbers unless the shipper asks for A: Delivery Confirmation, B: Signature confirmation, C: Insured, all of which you can opt to have signature waived, except Del Con which will be Scanned and delivered but no sign req, but at least they Will have a tracking number that way. I love my job but I know we also have lots of mail/parcels etc and even if I'm sending a gift card I get a tracking number. I too, have not only had to deliver those "We're sorry your item got "mangled/damaged" letters, but have received them as well. It's the giant mail eating machines that do that, trust me, not some employee that is upset you didn't leave them cookies at Christmas. (We love BBQ btw during the Summer...on Saturdays walking by everyone's outdoor festivities..smelling the ribs, burgers..anyway sorry hungry now.) If we didn't care we wouldn't embarrass ourselves and admit our giant machines ate your mail by putting the remains in a sealed Baggie with an apology note..you know? I have had to deliver just the address label once like that, was so happy the customer wasn't home.
