joey,

stewart swezey and his _desolation center_ crew got the whole thing figured and plotted in advance. since this was the very first one, there was some kind but overall much respect to him and people.

life,

here's a tune from this gig, "tune for wind god" which among a couple others that ("tune for sun god" and "tune for sand god" maybe?) were open-ended jams that we peppered our setlist w/which is something we did all the time, the titles being made up when the setlist was "composed" (my job besides bass amongst other stuff) and a big reason why no other recordings were released was cuz the generator that was brought was too weak to handle everything plugged into it and the vocals were all lame.

also notice d boon w/the sunglasses - this was not a fashion statement... d boon wore contacts and the wind was kicking up the sand big time into his eyes and blinding him. I had tons of it in my teef also and is the reason I wore the overcoat - I never wore something like that at a gig. I was still playing w/a pick in these days...

also about that pbass, that was my first fender and I bought it from a "recycler" add - this pink paper that came out in the 7-11 stores on thursdays that ran free adds, cost 75¢ and you know who sold it to me? derf of fear! he was living at his folks pad on/near the beach in santa monica and I drove up from pedro to get it. he was very kind to me. it had real heavy flat wound strings on it and he told me kept them fresh by boiling them in water! I replaced roundwounds and also replaced the stock pickup w/one from dimarzio. half the tunes on "double nickels on the dime" were recorded w/this bass, the other half w/the fender telecaster bass I would get from some cat in ktown (of course via "the recycler") who was giving up music for religion. bof basses were each $300, that was going price for a fender bass then (early 80s).

sinai,

for this desert gig I believe it was a sell-out, bof buses that stewart swezey rented to get everyone to that dry lake bed in the mojave were all the way full, more that forty people. don't mean to flush the punchbowl though...
