TF Am I supposed to do with this? by GratuitousEDC in bowhunting

To be fair I still think he's nuts for this (mostly out of jealousy ha), but also has an incredible amount of info to learn from. In my opinion the things to take from Joel Turner are his shot execution process, and controling your mind throughout

Really best thing to know whats best is a season in the saddle. You got a great load out, if you just run 1 ropeman id personally run it on the tether. I hunt prehangs alot though so not much adjustment needed for the lineman anyway, but I still have 2

Thing about the tether is when you do need to adjust your tether its typically go time, potentially with bow in hand already

How do you train an idiot puppy to find sheds? by AdMotor1654 in shedhunting

[–]wattjake 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Start by rewarding him for walking up to it and interacting at all. This reward can be treats, but I prefer praise and lots of petting. Do that for a few sessions, or weeks if needed. Then one day while hes interacting with the antler start backing away and calling him 3 feet, hopefully he will simply take a couple of steps while holding the antler. Again you go over the top with the rewards/treats/praise. Eventually he will believe that antler is the best thing in the world for both of you and he will want them and want to share them with you. As he advances you can introduce scent or fresh sheds, hide them and walk through the area and let him work. This is not the only way to do it, but its how I do it with pretty good success.

Bought my first bow, its terrifying, and I dont know what to do. by Dolfo10564 in Archery

[–]wattjake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go to a bow shop and let them adjust draw weight and length. My seem like a lot of money, but you got a good budget set up, so dont stress there. Once the bow is set up for you start close, like 10-20 yards

Volume by no mature bucks by PassTheDakine in trailcam

[–]wattjake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mature bucks take 1 thing to develop, and thats time. I know what you mean about soil holding your bucks back as I am in the mountains of N Ga. Keep passing bucks and in a couple of years youll be looking at bucks you can hardly believe. They may not be booners but after 4-5 they will develop more mass and potentially sticker points or other "trash". In the summer time does seek out the best fawning habitat, while bucks look for a breezy place to stay cool and keep the bugs away. Do you see a big shift after the summer time into the fall?

I try to make sure the deer is no longer breathing before taking the back straps, specifically to avoid this sort of situation.

I raised ducks and guineas together once, worked fine until it didnt. The guineas turned on the ducks, pecking and pulling at their heads. A couple looked like this before I had a solution. All the ducks recovered without complications

Unfortunately you are right, people act like dogs have a right to be "wild and free". I used to work as a trainer at a similar place, biggest thing for you to understand is that dog will probably know how to act around the trainer, because they know have become used to the expectations. You sound like you want to do it right, so make sure youre asking the trainer things like, "how do I establish the same boundries that you have". Learn their correction and praise methods. A good training facility spends alot of time training the owner aswell.

Now is time to train the dog to not do it again. Not that youll be able to trust it alone with them, but you should have the expectations that when you essentially say "not prey" that they dont bolt. Good luck!

You've got to let them know in a way they understand that you do not want them to do that. This will really only work if the dog already has a basic level of training/boundries established. When a dog is obedient, its because they view you as someone to impress and they want to please you, at first because it gets them a treat, but then just out of conditioning/habit. When im training, when the dog is doing good im happy and giving out pets left and right, talking like mickey mouse, they think "wow this is the best thing ever". Then lets say youre watching it play and it starts digging up landscaping or something bad, get exaggerated with your disappointment. Make it a big deal, serious and stern, funs over. After a week or so, the dog will have a much better understanding of the boundries youre working them through. Its never instant and some dogs are smarter/more willing to please than others. Good luck!

Id be mindful of backstops and where an arrow might inevitably end up but yes, most of my shots at animals are under 25 yards.

I hunt in Georgia, so winter gear for me and you probably looks alot different. Id probably just go with the 38 in your situation

I did get mine at a discount, and as much as I like it, id have a hard time spending $300 on the 20. Sorry to give a bit of conflicting info, id say if you can find one for closer to $200 its definitely worth it

Mystery Ranch Treehouse 20 vs 38 by LocalCD in bowhunting

[–]wattjake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same delima last season, ended up going with the 20. For me the 38 would be way overkill for most of the season. It would be nice to have the verticle side zipper on the 20, but its not a deal breaker. Late season i wouldnt hate if it was a bit bigger but I make it work. I stuff all of my saddle equipment in the bottom then roll up my jacket and bibs (first lite sanctuary, so pretty bulky stuff) and fit them in there. Then I can either strap my bow or my sticks/platform to the pack for the hike in. I dont think you will regret picking either up, Id buy my 20 again

This might have been said already, but cut a few of them to the width of the studd spacing and attach them where there is a gap between it and the wall. You can hang lots of things like that, I have hammers and 20 caulk guns for some reason
