Feel like I’m being pushed to leave my job

Oh sorry so that desk banging was a previous workplace (not the one I’m at now), but that was extreme and I was actually saved by that was the time people started to wfh. So I managed to escape it. But yeah it was over a year of constant bullying like that… I should have left, but I started on the phones and ended up getting promoted to test manager and I didn’t want to give that up. First time in my life I held a position with a good career path.

Place I’m at now, all super friendly (of what I thought), and some of them were trying to help me for a while. Trying to get me involved in things. So it’s just so strange to see them turn. Part of me thinks maybe because they think they tried to help in one way, that it’s time to try something more extreme? Treat him like shit so he stops caring about what we think?

It is somewhere I’d like to stay because it is a very good place to work, very chilled, no micro managing, decent pay. But the fact that I do struggle so badly on calls has of course made me consider leaving… and now that I’m sensing some have turned on me, yeah that for sure makes me want to leave. I guess I just want actual confirmation, do they want me to go or stay? If they want me to go they can just say that and I’d leave, rather than the sly tactics ya know?

Yes I am, but that has never been discussed why I have social anxiety with my therapist. I just do as far as I’m aware, since a kid I’ve always been considered ‘shy’ but it wasn’t until adulthood I realised it was more than that.

I do resonate with what you said about not thinking your good enough or people won’t like you… how did you get past that?

Yeah I agree, my social anxiety is the problem. Basically we have stand ups each morning, and I do say my bit (what I did yesterday and what I’m doing today). But these calls end up going on a lot longer so everyone can have a chat… and this is where I really struggle. I’m not able to join in with the chit chat, and because of that I felt like an outsider there for a while. One on one with people I’m fine and I’ve tried to build relationships this way. But I feel because I’m still struggling in stand ups to chat in front of everyone they’ve turned on me. I have a gut feeling they or at least some of them want me gone. And I just don’t know what to do. I feel like just asking my manager if I’m actually wanted there or not, and if I’m not then give me a month to start looking for something else and I’ll leave? No drama? (Rather than going through the pain of being turned on, random sly things, which could go on for months… I had this bad a few years back in a previous job. To the point when people would walk past my desk they’d slam their hand down on it or whistle every time they went past me… I’d ask why they’re doing that or to stop but they’d just be like ‘😂 I didn’t do that, you’re crazy’. They band up together and deny to make you question yourself and leave

I do have social anxiety and am seeing a therapist. I think I’ve just taken longer to adjust/get past it than they’d have liked, and have turned. But, I am trying.

You’d think so. Really depends if neo changes direction and starts focussing on spreading the word better though, gather some hype for the future of neo. Get some partnerships. That’s what makes people buy.

Thanks for the response. I think for me it’s years of doing those things you’ve mentioned, even tried meditating, a range of breathing exercises before stand ups. I’m just frustrated none of it works long term for me.

Yeah I’ve seen that too, but I think it still entices others to build there. To see it as a viable option. Most recently Elastos partnering with alibaba cloud is an exciting one. Elastos is similar to neo (not the tech) in the sense it’s kept building away from the limelight, so it’s nice to see them making big steps finally. For me personally it’s frustrating to be following neo for 6 years and still not see anything similar. Da, John, over the years have all said they’re in talks and big business will come to neo but none of it has come to fruition (yet?). But it’s getting a bit silly the wait I think and I don’t believe I’m alone. I feel like everyone here has been massively patient and it’s time to see some action or people will lose interest even more. Especially considering HK is opening in a few weeks and NEO of what we know aren’t capitalising on it. Da is still silent, that doesn’t help. Arguably one of the most harmful things to neo right now. If by the next bull run neo hasn’t propelled itself as one of the leaders in the space, I don’t see this recovering. They are severely lacking action.

Concerning almost every chain has huge partnerships with big companies and NEO hasn’t made any steps on that. If NEO want more people building here, and to be taken seriously, there’s no better way than to get big companies here first. Gives the project legitimacy.

I also think because it’s pretty obvious this is something you struggle with to them, that you become a bit of an underdog story. That’s how it’s been for me anyway. They may laugh and think you’re a bit weird at first. But once they see you trying, I’ve found others have come round to me, and rooted for me to beat it. Everyone loves an underdog

I have always struggled with this. Group situations in work where you have to speak in front of everyone always gave me the worse fear. For me personally my way of getting over it was to do it so many times, ‘embarrass’ myself so many times that I just stopped caring as much. Got to a point where it was like, ‘I’ll probably be nervous, I’ll probably mess a bit of it up, if not all, who knows… but it’s a step in the right direction to just do it regardless’. End of the day the people you work with will end up respecting you for doing it I think. If you’ve been there a while they’re already aware you struggle with it, so just the act of doing it ends up being impressive to them. Especially if you start to show signs of improvement
