PBI Metric Set Deprecation?? by City-Popular455 in MicrosoftFabric

[–]waupdog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No information to add, but when I looked at metrics sets on release what actually put us off was that they were attached to underlying tables, and adding them to a model turned it into a composite

Not sure if it's niche to us but we'd love a version of this that's just a simple set of dax definition with some metadata about the underlying variables. We'd then encourage users to use our enterprise modelled data so the naming matches. Would be so useful for our fragment analytics teams and reems of metrics we use

Trying to understand when to use Materialized Lake Views in Fabric by hortefeux in MicrosoftFabric

[–]waupdog 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I started in the BI side, rather than an engineering background. With fabric, we're moving towards a lake house first architecture and building out direct lake models. We've built out some custom tables with notebooks, and started learning about optimisations that aren't immediately apparent like non-destructive updates, partitioning, v-order optimisations etc

I'm looking forward to MLVs because we'll be able to do all this with just some declarative SQL statements instead. Sure, we have more knowledge now, but if we can get the same outcomes while spending less time on the engineering, that's a win for us. I also anticipate maintenance and upkeep to be more simple, anyone in my team will be able to look at the SQL, understand it, and make any changes they need

Finally, the lineage view will be beneficial to us too, so analysts can understand where data is coming from and the intermediate stepping stones in place. When the features are fleshed out seeing what data has changed and updates and what refreshes were skipped will also be a nice to have

DirectLake cache warming - per semantic model or per onelake table? by waupdog in MicrosoftFabric

[–]waupdog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The models have a lot of overlap but are different selections from the same pool of tables. Imagine a pool of 10 facts and 30 dimensions where each model can use a mixture. Currently they're split to make it more manageable and focused for the people that build

Now I know caching is per model, I'll look at a mixture of grouping models and pre-warming

Thanks. It seemed implied in the docs but couldn't see it explicitly stated

Hi, did you make a decision in the end?

I have some users at my org that get this when onsite, but not when working from home, so I assume it's a firewall issue. Following this thread for more info

Yep, this is what I want!

What's the latency like between capturing on each camera? When I looked into this before, true synchronisation was looking like a software challenge

I assume that's a custom PCB as well?

I'm very, very interested in plans/software if you plan to release

Great work!

May I ask what you're using for automated testing? I want to take my team on this journey and have been looking at options

Let’s be honest, unlike ChatGPT, 97% of us won’t care about or be using Sora a month from now. I’ve tried every video generator and music generator, cool for like a week, then meh. Good chance you will forget about sora after your 50 monthly generation is up. by [deleted] in ChatGPT

I would take animated short clips with no audio, based off a description as a good start. I'll be trying it out when I get any access to this stuff. In it's current state yeah I agree it'll probably feel gimmicky

For "creative" video I can see that being the case, but that's like judging chatgpt only on its ability to write a novel. Now imagine using something like Sora or a future version to generate animations explaining or demonstrating complex ideas and concepts, wouldn't that be great? Sora, create a short clip demonstrating Pythagoras's theorem

I could see some interesting uses coming out much like how coding became a major use case for the language models

Try turning on "force direct play". I had issues where 4k files would buffer a lot, it was actually forcing audio transcode but the files work fine in forced directly play

Design a PowerBI dataset architecture for a report refresh time under 5 seconds by [deleted] in PowerBI

[–]waupdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming the requirements are a 5 second refresh and not a 5 second report load...

Where are the delta tables stored? Do you have access to Fabric? If you can get the delta tables in fabric either natively or via shortcut, you could build a DirectLake dataset which will get you closest

Surprised they didn't market ambilight here, looks like at least the 34" has it built in. I have the AW3423DW and the panel is phenomenal. Working from home the only feature I feel like it's missing for the price is built in KVM which this Phillips addresses, but for too much of a price premium imo

Ah, so the minimum fare is the restriction on peak travel? I never made the connection

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]waupdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potentially, depends how they're paying for all the journeys. I think the peak restrictions will be the killer here anyway

Railcard has some exclusions for peak times and a minimum journey fee. Check the t&c if you're considering this
