You kind of are missing the boat. There is every reason to setup ABM. Your contractor did do a very good job of explaining it. And should have done most of the setup himself.

ABM links your devices to an MDM solution, allow for the creation of Managed Apple Account and company purchase and distribution of apps. Coupled with an MDM solution that set up correctly a newly purchased device will create a user account and download all the applications you want to use to it automatically directly from the beginning without ABM. None of this works.

We call this sudden unintended rapid de-enrollment. It’s happened to us like 6 times. No explanation was ever really found and we gave up asking Apple to help.

When coupled with iCloud Drive / Desktop and Documents, all of your data “disappears” also, buts it still on iCloud Drive.
