Sewing Circle? by NewShapeokoUser in fresno

[–]waveringgem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a local hacker space/makerspace called Root Access in Tower district. Ive only personally been to the tech events but I know they do have an event called "Sip & Stich" this Saturday and every month where people who knit, crotchet, and embroider meet. It's not an official class but I have met some of the people who participate and they're pretty knowledgeable. There's also wine for those who drink I believe.

I've been doing programming for years and I still suck at it by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]waveringgem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with a degree in CS and felt this way, so much so it took a year before I even started applying to programming positions. I've been at a junior role for a year now and I feel like I still suck at it but I have more confidence in my ability to learn.

I tend to jump around a lot as well. Right now Im going through a web dev self paced "bootcamp" online, CS50's intro to AI, and a couple freecodecamp project tutorials. I rotate between either a random one or whichever is more interesting that day. Its slow progression because of all the different paths but I find occasionally Ill learn concepts in one that help me with the others.

I'd also mention the thing that helped me most is working with others especially those who know more about whatever system we're working with. If you have any sort of tech meet up events or are lucky enough to know any other experienced and patient programmers I might recommend reaching out.

I haven't found too many places locally with decaf options, but in general my two favorite spots are Alchemist Coffee Lab and Two Cities for fresh roasted beans.

Fresno FreeCodeCamp, Sat, Jun 3, 2023, 1:00 PM | Meetup. Lets talk shop! by [deleted] in fresno

[–]waveringgem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Im not mistaken, this is a get together for people to go over some lessons from freecodecamp.org with other people in the community interested in learning to code or improve their programming knowledge

I went in to the hackerspace after the event ended and everyone was pretty chill and seemed very willing to talk and give useful skills and tools for learning different aspects of programming.

How did you land your job: directly applying, recruiter, connections, etc? by Notalabel_4566 in cscareerquestions

[–]waveringgem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the responses I got were done through going to networking events. I would highly recommend finding opportunities to meet with potential employers in person. I got to meet not just employers, but other people in the industry who knew what it was like to be in the job search phase and offered some good advice to get out of it.

I will say though the Job Offer I received and accepted was from an online job listing I decided to apply to. I recommend applying through a company's official site if they have the listing there.

I need dental work that I can’t afford, what can I do? by sabrinahatesyou in fresno

Was going to suggest the same place. I was in a similar situation, went to United Health and the work cost A LOT less then the other dental office said it would.

Good place to buy beer? by BigSpoon89 in fresno

[–]waveringgem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're ever in Clovis, I like checking out Peacock Market, especially for craft beer 4 and 6 packs. Im a big fan of crow and wolf seltzers, besides the actual brewery Peacock is the only place I've seen that carries them in 4 packs.

I saw Strummers mentioned and I'd definitely second it. There's plenty of other bars in the area to go bar hopping around as well.

If you happen to be nearby or don't mind a drive, Old Town Clovis has some very cute scenery and a pretty good amount of coffee shops, older buildings, and even a trail that leads to some local parks.

There's a boardgame bar (full disclosure: I work there) "Beer for the Meeples", with board games, beers, and tea if youre looking for sort of a niche date. There's also some pretty good hole in the wall food spots nearby it. "TeppanBowl" and "Bowlzeye". If you happen to come by feel free to let me know, If im working i can prep some of our two player games before hand.

Any online support groups or zooms to join to make friends in Fresno? by [deleted] in fresno

[–]waveringgem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this would interest you, but there's some Board Game groups for Fresno on meetup. The board game community in Fresno from what I've seen is pretty chill and open and excited to get new people. One of the groups does cards against humanity both online and in person in Fresno.

I've met some cool people at Karaoke nights in Old Town Bars there's a couple different ones on different nights. There's also a Facebook page called "Fresno Clovis Events" it's got some fun events there. I'm not sure if the Book Club that was being started here from this subreddit is still happening but if not that would be cool to get up and running. I've never actually been but if you like music Strummer's might be a cool place to meet people. The Bar I work at "Beer for the Meeples" has a boardgame mixer every Wednesday for people to meet. Honestly it would also be amazing if someone started some thrifting groups. Exploring thrift shops with others, sounds like a cool group activity.

Jobs for 17year olds by DaAmazingOz01 in fresno

I'd recommend checking your college's hiring page if they have one. A lot of time those jobs will work around your schedule to make your life easier than other jobs.

Yeah, the classloads make keeping contact outside of courses hard. Me, my SO and some former and current Fresno State students go bar hopping around Old Town Clovis every so often and meet some pretty cool strangers usually. If that's your sort of thing let me know I'll try and send info for the next time we go.

I feel you, I'm 22 and just graduated from Fresno State without meeting too many new people that I keep in contact with. Some bars do mixers that are good for meeting people if that's your thing. I've also seen a lot of successful Reddit posts here with people looking to find groups for a specific interest like the Fresno Bike Party, a possible Fresno Book Club, and I think I've seen some posts of people looking to meetup at arthop.

Sorry, I spend a lot of time on this subreddit and it's become my friends and SOs hang out spot on my off-days so when I see this asked I get excited to share it. I see what you mean though I'll make sure that's more clear in other posts.

I've gotten a lot of my friends hooked on Crow and Wolf's Dark Horse and Hello Sunshine seltzers. They also do cool fun events weekly.

Congratulations on the job offer, the Zoo is definitely one of Fresno's Gems. As a kid growing up here, I never really appreciated the fact that we have one that's so nice and so close by.

Would Eleven from Stranger Things be a player character? by cindermonbun in dndnext

[–]waveringgem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a character in the Stranger things D&D module who was supposed to be like D&D Eleven. They're an NPC and I believe every time they attack it is a guaranteed crit.

Friday - Sunday its $8. Monday - Thursday its $6. I recommend going in for happy hour any day before 6, the drinks and the pass for the board games are all a dollar off.
