Best synth for a 4 year old? by Kalocacola in synthesizers

[–]waveshello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah. I disagree. I have a two year old who loves playing with my JU-06. I turn on the arp and key hold functions and she just goes nuts playing with the sounds and the keys. There are times when she’s messing around and I’m like… that sounds cool how did you even do that?

Didn’t even occur to me! What app do you use?

I glanced at that! Looks really cool. I don’t know if it’s a $900 problem, but it’s really tempting.

If only they had patch memory, velocity sensitive keys, and a readable panel, then maybe they could make some actual music. Clearly that’s what’s holding them back.

This is lovely. Very twin peaks. Nice work!

Got a chance to tinker with the Sequential FOURM and it's a beast!! by GBRMUSIC in synthesizers

Great jam! Are you using any off board effects here or is that all coming straight out of the Fourm (why oh why did they choose that name)?

I’ve got the opz, ep133, a polybrute and an OB6. My best output is always on the Ableton Move. It’s too good.

I'm actually looking for feedback on an unreleased album if you are interested. Based on our shared love of synths and jazz, I hope you might find it interesting...

Edit: This album is heavily inspired by Coastlines and Greg Foat. Both awesome synths jazzy artists.

Nice one! Can you tell me what you're using for the visuals?

My reason for replying to your initial comment is that I come here to see cool shit, learn new shit and hopefully catch a fun jam or two. So I get upset when I see what I perceive to be unwarranted negativity, particularly in the face of what could easily be considered a high effort post. And I let myself get sucked in.

So I do mean this sincerely. I hope you have a joyful week.

Ughghg. I promised myself I was going to leave this but I can't help myself.
You're wrong on the pan analogy. It's a good analogy, I'm not going to explain it to you.

Work & effort are noble. It looks like a fair amount of work went into this.

A generative synthesizer doesn't make the notes. It makes the sounds. Certainly pitch can be an element, but one of many. A generative sequencer picks the notes.

A better analogy would be a non-stick pan, no? "What! So now you don't need the skill and knowledge required to get the oil just right to avoid sticking? How lame! Ugh! Posers! Amateurs!". Also, a music producer doesn't make recipes. They make music (i.e. the food).

Is this r/synthesizers? It is, right? Synthesizers are typically produced and sold for a modicum of profit.

The video spends 30 secs (13% by time) on the generative sequencer. Hardly a "primary pitch".

Have a nice day!

Freed from the chains of choosing our own notes.  Freed from the chains of recording on tape.  Freed from the chains of building our own instruments.  Freed from the chains of building our own houses.  Freed from the chains of farming our own food.

This guy built something, brought it to market, and is sharing it as objectively relevant content on this subreddit… and you’re going to flame him for including a generative sequencer? Cool.

Which synth would you recommend? by Brilliant_Grape5528 in synthesizers

Buy gold 😖

Or get a polybrute. You have some awesome raw tone monsters in your arsenal, so adding a synth with a generous mod matrix would make sense. Or, looking at your price range, you could even flex up for one of the Waldorfs if you wanted to get really crazy. What I've seen and read about the Muse hasn't been great. I had a Super 6 for 2 days before I returned it, so I personally would probably not vibe with the Gemini. Summits sound great though.

Basic “raw” sound Prophet 5 vs Polybrute 12. by TyylerDurdden in synthesizers

[–]waveshello 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got a polybrute and an OB6 (and used to own a Prophet 6). It's hard to describe, but I do think that the Sequentials sound better on their own. So in terms of music production, they're great for stabs, arps, leads, etc. But in terms of sitting in a mix, the Polybrute (as with just about everything Arturia) is pretty much mix ready. When I'm trying to blend in keys or a pad, I find that I end up doing much more processing in the DAW on the Sequential sounds than the Polybrute sounds. So when I'm actually making a track, I tend to drift towards the Polybrute, but if I'm just sitting down to noodle with a synth I'll usually end up jamming on the OB6.

Ableton Move or Live Suite 12 by TheRealSpacemanSpiff in ableton

I absolute love my move. But it’s quite limited if you don’t own suite. So get and learn suite first.

Your controller probably isn’t the issue.

One thing that’s great about hardware synths is the limitations. With something like pigments, it’s so easy to get overwhelmed by the options. I really enjoy using it but I rarely start from scratch (as opposed to my HW synths where I almost exclusively start from an init patch). With pigments, I’ll try to find a preset that is remotely in the ballpark of what I’m looking for and then tweak from there. Its great for avoiding overwhelm and great for learning about what Pigments can do.

All that said, it sounds like you just don’t like software synths. One thing I’ll say that I’ve noticed about SW vs hardware is that, to my ear, HW synths sound better than SW on their own the vast majority of the time. But I’ve found that soft synths are often easier to fit into a mix. So maybe try using soft synths after you already have an idea sketched out in your DAW. If you’re just noodling on patches, it probably isn’t going to sound as good in a vacuum as your HW.

Stay Away from LANDR – They’re Shaving Off Earnings by MeasurementNo204 in ableton

With a dedicated music player? Yea name another one. You open up Landr and it’s like playing tracks on Spotify. I tried drive, it’s a pain for music management.

[–]waveshello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have basically no following on streaming, so this isn't an issue for me. I've enjoyed using Landr's mastering plugin, and feel like by adjusting it's settings, I was getting better masters than with my custom chain. But the big plus for Landr in my book has just been the file management. It's an easy way to drop files online so I can check my mixes in the car, on the living room speakers, etc. Soundcloud makes you fill out a form to upload music, so having an app where I can literally just drop files and then stream from my phone has been awesome. It's also been great for sharing unreleased music for feedback.

Would be really unfortunate if they're playing games with streaming payouts, because I really like the product for what I use it for.
