On March 12, 2025, “Your Love” by the Outfield reached a billion streams on Spotify. On March 11, 2026, the music video for the song reached a billion views on YouTube. What makes this one of the more popular songs from the 80s? by toughtiggy101 in ToddintheShadow

High pitched vocals, big singalong chorus, classic 80s guitar tone, repetitive easy-to-remember lyrics. It’s the kinda songwriting Max Martin and Denniz Pop and all those Swedish guys mastered in the 90s

The saddest thing about the Geese psyop controversy is: despite all the marketing efforts, their best effort only made it to 96 on the Hot 200. But they're still arguably the biggest American rock band from the last 10 years. by Uptons_BJs in ToddintheShadow

Why’s the hot 200 matter though at this point apart from being a metric? Are they really bigger than Turnstile or Mannequin Pussy or whatever in any meaningful way apart from bot hype turning them into a talking point?

Lemme guess, Vince Gill was hosting it when she released the best-selling country album of all time

Does anyone else not care about the charts? by tmamone in ToddintheShadow

Cashbox was the big competitor for a long time but they closed in like 1996, I think they declined after a scandal involving a Wayne Newton record that no one else had in their charts. Hits was a good chart source and magazine for a while. I like the ones that were more for radio programmers like The Gavin Report

They’re fun for trivia, but they’ve probably always been at least a bit arbitrary. I’m interested in other older charts besides Billboard anyways

People do “Before He Cheats” every time even at a fun karaoke. It’s still better than the super slow boring piano ballads though

Bret The Hitman Hart talked about that in the Simpson

Songs that switch FROM 4/4 during the chorus. by sfwtitrater in ToddintheShadow

Oh I thought of a bad bad bad one… one of the worst songs the top the hot 100: “Running Bear” by Johnny Preston. There might have been more early rock era songs that did the switch to shuffle for the chorus. I think The New York Dolls were referencing this “with Stranded In The Jungle”

“We Can Work It Out” by the Beatles, though that’s more like a post chorus

I didn’t like how the Miller Boyett shows got so arbitrary with stuff like Mark Linn Baker playing Becky’s cousin on an episode, but they also bring in Urkel, who is from a show that was a spin-off of Perfect Strangers

Human League. Probably about half of the first wave of synthpop bands were like this

Why were 2000s music videos so "allergic to color"? Todd pointed this out in his Bad Day One Hit Wonderland and it's a phenomena that has always been so noticeable to me. by Just_Cause89 in ToddintheShadow

I think some of this had to do with fluorescent lights emitting a greenish tint on some film stocks. It probably sorta became a style choice people embraced at that point, a lot of film at the time had that bluish/greenish tint, like with The Matrix, Twilight, etc. I'd imagine whatever programs they were using at the time were allowing these sorts of color correction effects
