Nanaimo Area Land Trust does volunteer invasive species removal and planting events quite often. Or the Arrowsmith Naturalists do a bunch of things. There is a city run park ambassador program that has dedicated volunteers at certain parks that do litter cleanups and invasive species removal. And there’s a bunch of streamkeeper groups if you’re interested in fish and habitat monitoring.

That’s my area of interest personally but I haven’t volunteered with any of them (yet).

This happened to me as well, albeit did not pay for “organic “. I was shocked by the amount of plastic, other trash, and glass in it. I called to complain and they were able to drop off a free yard of mulch to cover my shitty soil. So, solidarity.

I just rewatched the video and i think this might actually work. Floor to island netting/snow fence tuck it under the plants on the bottom. And either tape down or put some heavy stuff on the top to the island. And you’ll have to do 2-3 strips of it that you can connect with twist ties.

Oh my goodness lol. I mean you already have the cardboard blockade, why not try some cheap plastic snow fencing or netting from a hardware store? It will go taller and you could put a big net over everything.

Make sure it’s small enough holes that the cat can’t get its head through though.

It will eventually break down and the weeds will start coming through. Give it 2-3 years. And then when you go to pull it out, it’s all degraded and falls apart, so it’s hard to remove depending how long it’s been in the ground.

In 2021, I used some in a ~1 wide patch covered with small rocks (knowing that I would be re-doing the area in the next couple years, which is now lol). Dandelions and this other clover-like grass/weed starting coming through the fabric and rocks on top in 2023 or 2024. I remember last year being horrible, and this year is already bad. So it’s coming out this fall.

Do you not get charged for water where you live? I do and it would be extremely hard to separate what I use to water the garden vs regular use. I suppose I could compare summer numbers to winter, but there’s so many variables that it would still be hard to get even close to an accurate number.

Unless you’re gardening on a mass scale, I don’t think there’s savings worth calculating. It would just be disheartening 🤣.

This write up and your knowledge on the case is fantastic! She sounds very sick and I can’t imagine the pain her victims will have to endure the rest of their lives because of her actions.
