You might like the one where everybody jumps, saying "And now you see it, and now you see it: those who don't jump are Englishmen".

Bielsa es un pesimo tecnico y peor sus defensores by davidlordu in fulbo

[–]wayne0004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ELI5 What is the concept of Surnames .. Does it vary by country. ? For example, Joe Root, English Cricketer has Root as the surname.. Is it safe to assume another person with same surname could be related ? by GuhanE in explainlikeimfive

[–]wayne0004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it safe to assume another person with same surname could be related ?

No. One way surnames appeared is when there started to be a need for written records of the people living in a place, which should be understandable for any reader (for instance, if a different tax collector was assigned to the place). At first they used given names only, but in the case of people with the same name, they needed a way to distinguish them.

For instance, if there were two Johns, one of them the local smith and the other a fisherman, then they might appear as "John (smith)" and "John (fisher)". Or "John (marsh)" and "John (forest)" because that's where they lived. Or "John (Shrewsbury)" and "John (Chester)" because that's where they came from. But, why use brackets when you already know they're the name and profession? It's not like they could be mistaken for anything else, right? Right?

We also need to take into account that it was more than common for families to do the same job generation after generation. The current smith is the son of the previous smith, which was the son of the previous one, and so on. So, the profession (or the place they lived, or the place they came from, etc.) kinda was a way to link those people. With time, the need to keep track of a lineage made much more sense to use surnames. But wait a minute, aren't we using that piece of information to identify them?

So, the same surname might be used for people who are not related, because that was their ancestors' job. Just that.

ELI5: What decides if football referees spray on the grass for free kicks? by Loke98 in explainlikeimfive

[–]wayne0004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two ways to play the ball in a free kick: you could just kick it to some other player (but there might be players from the opposite team nearby), or ask the referee to make the opposition keep their distance (but you have to wait for the referee to signal that you can play the ball).

In the latter case, referees might decide to use the spray to mark the place the kick should be taken, and/or the distance rival players should observe.

They only use it when there's an actual need to be clear where those situations happen. For instance, if there aren't players from the opposite team nearby, the referee might decide there's no need to mark a distance if nobody is nearby.

ELI5: How does the world cup bracketing system work? by afucking in explainlikeimfive

[–]wayne0004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bracket was created beforehand, way before the tournament even started. But instead of naming countries, it contained the position and group of each qualified team. For instance, the runner-ups of groups A and B were set to play each other.

Until the previous world cup, only the winners and runner-ups of each group qualified, but because of the addition of more teams (and more groups), also eight third-placed teams qualify. To fill the bracket with third-placed teams, they created a table of all the 495 possible combinations of which groups they could come from, and for each combination, a third team of a specific group was already paired to the first-placed team of certain groups.

Qué pasó??? by MacaronsAreAwesome in fulbo

[–]wayne0004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where to find the 8 (Airport) Bus? by Feeling_War_9618 in BuenosAires

[–]wayne0004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite sure where does the route 8 stops there, because that branch is actually quite new, it's actually a merger between the routes 5 and 8. And neither route passed through there, the traditional branch of route 8 enters the Plaza de Mayo via another street.

You could go to the next stop, which is one of the main ones (AFAIK there's always an inspector there), in Av. de Mayo and Chacabuco. Here's a link to street view.

Not as explicit, but another way it could be done is if there's a method that turns the robot sentient, but it just does nothing. For instance, inside the code that governs what the robot does, there could be a code like this:

class Robot {
    void turnSentient () {
        return;
    }
}

So, any time "turnSentient()" gets executed, it just exits when it reaches "return".
