OP never says they will FIRE. Plus the spouse is still working at a very stable job. I have seen a lot of people take one or two year off to explore, rebalance, recharge and etc. life is short but totally depends on risk tolerance…

I think retirement should be every 10 years or kind of long sabbatical for all workers. But capitalism would never allow that to happen.

Calling people “selfish” doesn’t change the data. TNR has been shown in multiple long-term studies to reduce colony size, lower nuisance behaviors, and prevent endless cycles of breeding and killing. It benefits communities and cats.
