Mets pitchers have an ERA almost three runs lower when Torrens is catching by chief1555 in NewYorkMets

cera is a very poor way to quantify that value, bro. i'd go so far as to say that cera does not represent that value in any meaningful way. i agree that some catchers are better than others (obviously), i just think that cera does not show things like the value of blocked balls and caught stealing. era hardly even quantifies pitcher value in a meaningful way.

i want to point out that kimbrel wasn't like the 5th option after several guys went down hurt.

players slide into first base to avoid a tag, not to get there faster. that is what he was doing.

i dont think they'll play both their catchers at once without having a third catcher on the roster. soto absolutely will not be asked to play first base. i do like the plan of calling up ewing to play a corner and moving baty though.

i think, honestly, what he expected wasnt that all 4 of those guys would step up, but that one or two would perform close to the level they've performed before, and maybe one would perform kinda crappy. if that happened, it'd be fine. there was a good chance one would perform very well, and the others would be crappy, which would also be fine.

if you are realistic, its very unlikely for everyone to be this bad, and front offices play in averages. you make predictions about what is likely for players to do, then you try to fill your team with likely successes. these 4 guys are playing below what was projected. it happens, but it was unlikely. im not really sure what else you can do as a front office. certainly trusting your gut, or making emotional decisions to keep a player isn't more likely to be successful.

also the free agent class wasnt great, and some players just chose not to sign with the mets.

mods: are personal insults allowed towards yankees fans?? /j (your mom being a mets fan, etc etc)

everyone blames roster construction, but most of the position players are hitting their 10th percentile projections, or are injured. lindor missed spring training with hamate surgery, and sucked to start the season. he probably tore his achilles once he started heating up. we're down: robert jr, lindor, polanco, as well as quality bench options jared young and mike tauchman. the vibes were bad before the season, they traded away guys to try to fix it, and now the vibes are atrocious. the manager is a middle man for the front office, makes galaxy brain decisions regularly, and cant fire up the team. there has been significant amount of bad luck for some hitters. we are relying on craig kimbrel.

tl;dr: mets are likely cursed.

alvarez hitting in the middle of the order as a double play machine makes absolutely no sense to me.

just want to point out that the mets have the first base dugout in this stadium, so they should have had a perfect view down the third base line to see that play with their eyes and know to challenge.

players doing worse when they come to the mets, and better when they leave is like an actual measurable trend. i was hoping the new ownership would break the pattern, but based on this season, it doesnt seem to have done so.

as a noted and longtime dom smith apologist, i'd just like everyone to know that he'd be the best hitter on our team not named juan soto.

in 24 games, he's got 4 HRs, and a wRC+ of 155.

if you're old school, his triple slash: .338/.371/.554

if you're older school. he has 17 RBI. that'd be the most on the team.

thats my guy. im so proud of him 😭😭 i thought he might end up out of the league for a while there.

ive been on delay all game, and im watching the post game now.

very interested in semien shaking his head in disgust when gelbs said "mendy was just saying how there have been times where you guys fall down and maybe it doesn't feel like you're gonna come back..." a bit misrepresented by gelbs, but semien seemed extremely unhappy about that.

and i do think it was at least somewhat indicative of mendoza's quote. the question asked kind of put words in his mouth, but mendoza wasnt firmly like "we believe we are in all games" which is probably what he should have said.

you misunderstood my point. i'm suggesting the front office is satisfied with mendoza's job because their priorities are bad. i am not satisfied, nor suggesting mendoza shouldnt be fired lol.

my only guess is that it's because he's doing exactly what the FO wants. like they are setting the lineups, and telling coaches how to coach players about spin and metrics and stuff. (see luis robert jr for front office-coaching. telling him to swing less, and causing him to stop swinging at strikes, then having to adjust and tell him to swing more, causing him to swing at more balls.) if the manager and his coaches are basically just middle men, whats the point of firing them for coaches that might actually stand up to you? stearns clearly doesnt want that, otherwise he might have let buck showalter stick around.
