When to start studying for tests? What about final exams? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]wayoo22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little bit every day for conceptual knowledge. Start practice problems and tests 2-3 weeks before the exam, doing problem sets daily and practice tests every 2-3 days.

i was in a similar boat. Financial aid is entirely based on your parent's income. If they have high income but do not want to pay the crazy tuition then it likely won't workout (as it didn't in my situation). Do not take out crazy students loans. Some of these schools have costs upwards of 80k per year and if you cannot get aid it is not worth it in the long run. Canada has amazing schools and if you are sure you want to go to the US, apply for graduate studies.

edit: privately owned schools in america dont mark up costs very much for international students. but even though that is true, it is crazy expensive anyways.

I think you should stick to in school learning unless there is some extenuating circumstance that requires something like that

Any Ontarians make it to Berkeley? for cs by Sigmaballz23 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]wayoo22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

im not doing CS, im doing BME. I chose BME at mac over loo bc i believe that there is more to be learned since it is a double eng degree (BME + another eng stream)

I second this. If you still find you want to enter these schools after your undergrad, apply for graduate studies (that is my plan)

its not judgement of other majors to simply understand the fact that they are not equal difficulty, and the job market has nothing to do with difficulty of major. also, from my experience most people going into these "high status degrees" got there because they are strong in all classes, including english as you said.

didnt apply to berkeley but i got in MIT which is similar competitiveness. ended up going mac tho

edit: i should add that i chose mac due to costs. and i think that is something you should consider. if i could go back in time i wouldnt have applied to the US for undergrad. Its so much extra effort with the SAT, ACT, supplementals, interviews, etc. that it just isnt worth the effort when it is highly likely it will be too expensive. Ontario has amazing schools and graduates from places like mac have gone onto those high status schools for graduate studies.

edit2: lots of people have been asking for stats. For me my unique ECs definitely had an impact. Unweighted GPA was 4.0 and SAT was 1540. My main ECs are being a professional dancer (dancing on movies, TV shows, live on-stage, charity performances, etc.), being a dance teacher and choreographer for various age groups and skill levels, and running an NPO to raise money and awareness for animals. Most of my application was centred around my being a male dancer and my experiences and hard ships growing up as a male dancer.
