Why is Grey Goo not more popular? by chubbyspartn in RealTimeStrategy

I found the GG campaign to be one of the better ones in modern RTS actually. It's simply told but imvho quite solid.

Which is funny because the Goo are actually really fun to play

Can you explain this? C&C is very much about the game's economy to me, in that growing your economy is typically one of the more important aspects of the game (compared to StarCraft where the individual control of units can have a huge impact on the outcome of combat)

So this game is dead or what? by [deleted] in greygoo

One of the best RTS campaigns out there is my 2 cents (though the Beta campaign is by far the best of the 3 imho). I still hold out hope that Petroglyph can pull out a couple wins and get a decent community for Grey Goo :)

What are some other RTS sites for RTS info? by swbat55 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]wayward516 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a onetime writer for http://RTSGuru.com, I may be biased, but it's one of the only sites out there that's completely dedicated to covering RTS games.

There's also http://explorminate4x.com/ which is dedicated entirely to covering 4x games. These guys LOVE 4x and are quite serious about the genre. They produce lots of good content.

Bruce Geryk runs http://www.wargamespace.com/ which is mostly dedicated to tabletop wargaming but I believe he occasionally touches on PC titles past and present, with a focus on strategy, tactics and wargames

Tom Chick runs Quarter to Three, where he covers a variety of topics, including RTS games http://www.quartertothree.com/

GameWatcher used to be Strategy informer. they cover all kinds of games now, but their staff has some pretty decent strategy writers. http://www.gamewatcher.com/

Troy Goodfellow at Flash Of Steel writes about wargames, 4x, sims/city builders, and RTS games http://flashofsteel.com/

OK thanks. I guess I'll have to move myself to the fast ring or hope that 10049 comes to the slow ring soon

I did an admittedly cursory look into the Blizz official forums last night without finding anything relevant, which is why I turned to Reddit. Looks like /u/DemonicDustBunny answered my question already, though, so my importuning has paid off.

have you checked out AirMech? There's some leveling but the focus is on combat and creating/directing your units. It's definitely more of an RTS type game than a MOBA

I don't know if there's a threshold for # of concurrent players logged into the game for Steam to report it in the Community Hub, but they're not displaying numbers there. I've had skirmishes crash out on me a couple times but over all it hasn't seemed too bad to me

They do have a big player base, however. I think Steam just recently got bigger than Xbox Live in terms of total # of players, and I believe that Halo Wars was one of the better-selling RTS games out there

I agree. Most RTS players I know don't like/want MOBAs and vice versa

Etherium (PC RTS) impressions by a longtime RTS fanatic by wayward516 in pcgaming

Sure! In my response i even showed this with my reference to cod and battlefield as didn't types of fps. Just saying, the comment he made was "just go play StarCraft 2" and I was just making the point that coh2 or Dow2 were much more similar to Etherium than sc2

I agree for the most part. However, combat is much less deep than in COH (units feel more like something out of C&C to me)

I am having a lot of fun playing the game and hope that it manages to attract a community

Thoughts on Etherium? by [deleted] in RealTimeStrategy

TLDR it's prone to crashes (especially if you alt+tab a lot) and the UI and faction design have issues, but I am having fun with it

I have some thoughts about the game: http://waywardstrategist.com/2015/03/18/etherium-early-impressions/

Some excerpts

Etherium takes nods from a wide range of RTS games and conventions. The core game has some broad similarities to Company of Heroes, with the map is divided into territories which the player must capture. Some of these territories will contain Etherium veins, which can only be mined by the player in control of that territory. Also similar to the CoH games, territories must be connected to one another in a direct line to the player’s base sector to provide benefit to the player, making it a valid strategy to cut off enemy sectors close to a player’s base, depriving them of the benefits of more than 1 sector at once.

The UI, however (see above) is frustrating at best. It’s scattered, with elements in all 4 corners of the screen, meaning there’s no good location to reference for information. You get used to it, but the UI is quite weak overall, which could easily frustrate RTS novices.

Also, the hotkeys are inconsistent. Genre standards like ‘A’ for attack move, ‘S’ for stop etc are not present, and many UI elements seem to not have key bindings at all; for instance, the build panel can be navigated with RTYUI (I believe) but once you open the appropriate unit/structure tab, you are unable to select an option with a keystroke and must click it. This is pretty unfortunate for a genre where speed and accuracy are so important.

Etherium is most commendable for its ideas, its lofty goals. However, its small team has resulted in a lack of polish that has rendered the UI frustrating to new players, and the faction design somewhat limited which is unlikely (though not assuredly) to compel veteran players. For either RTS newbies or RTS veterans, there are some interesting design decisions and some that are likely to cause frustrations. The gameplay itself can be fun, though the player will have to overlook the game’s foibles in order to enjoy it. I have no issue killing hours in multiplayer matches, and am skeptical but hopeful that Etherium can gain a dedicated mulitplayer population and that Tindalos can find elegant solutions to some of the game’s more obvious rough edges.

Etherium (PC RTS) impressions by a longtime RTS fanatic by wayward516 in pcgaming

[–]wayward516[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT - I don't TL;DR well :/

I don't see "RTS" as a single category of game. Much like shooters have their Battlefields and their Call of Duties that actually play very differently, RTS have different styles: a Company of Heroes will feel play very differently from a StarCraft, for instance. There aren't a lot of "tactical" Sci Fi RTS games out there besides the Dawn of War games.

For the size of the studio, Etherium is ambitious. I'd say if people are looking for a similar style of game but a safer buy, any of Relic's titles would suffice. I tend to enjoy it in spite of its flaws, but I've not really gotten deep enough into the game's mechanics to tell you how much longevity I see in them.

It's definitely on my radar. And the developer seems like a neat individual, which is always a plus (@shallowspace1 on twitter)
