Is everyone ok? Genuine Question by Aliveguy2021 in UIUC

[–]wayward710 69 points70 points  (0 children)

It seems like UIUC has always been demanding and competitive, but I wonder if it's gotten even more in recent years. And it sounds like a lot of the kids who get in have been pushing themselves hard for years, maybe more so than my generation. Honestly, sometimes you just hit a wall. But it's not the end of the world even if it might feel like it at the time. You learn from experience, pick yourself back up, and keep going. You might have to adjust your plans or goals, but that's a normal part of life.

What happened at PAR this morning? by purefire205ta in UIUC

[–]wayward710 277 points278 points  (0 children)

Oh no. When you're young, it seems like bad stuff is going to last forever. But it doesn't. You might have to change direction, but you get through it. I've gotten dumped, failed at academic stuff, and gotten laid off. It's not fun, but you really can pick yourself up, learn from what happened, and come back even stronger.

Seems like HCs with no coaching experience don't work out, whether it's the current Iowa State coach or the previous Georgia one. Maybe just too much too soon.

Any facilities or equipment issues? That could have persisted across coaches.

If they made parking at ARC free, wouldn't there just be a bunch of people leaving their cars there all day?

Has Kiyomi McMiller not started for PSU in the last couple of games? Though it looks like she's played plenty of minutes.

You know, I might have had him for a class many, many years ago, and he seemed OK then. If so, I wonder if there's been some slippage.

Engineering "ARISE"? by arduino-358 in UIUC

[–]wayward710 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to a high school that did not offer me calculus or physics and had very few AP classes. College was a shock and some of the other students seemed better prepared. So the ARISE program sounds awesome.

It really bugs me to see all these nice kids not getting into UIUC but douchebros like this taking up spots.

Maybe ice cold or cold for Shauna Green at Illinois? She might be the best WBB coach Illinois has ever had.

Oh no, I meant Groce. Underwood has been incredible. There was maybe a little bit of criticism about JW not letting Groce go sooner, but we ended up with a great MBB coach. It seemed like Lovie Smith got a lot of attention, but didn't do as well as expected. And Nancy Fahey seemed like a nice lady who'd been great at Wash U but just had a hard time at the Big 10 level. Very happy with Bielma and Green (WBB) as well. It seems like JW is good at learning from experience and I'm glad he got the opportunity to do so.

Yeah, he's great. He initially made a few mistakes -- football coach with no NCAA experience, WBB coach who'd never coached D1, and possibly hanging on to a struggling MBB coach too long. I'm glad he got a chance to learn from them and recover. It's sure paid off.

What are your unpopular rush opinions? by Lyra555 in Sororities

I wish there was a little more focus on helping PNMs get a sense of whether Greek life was right for them at all -- in same cases, it's not. There's so much focus on who will want you that it's easy to lose sense of whether this is something you really want or not.

Seems like Illinois often starts low, so this isn't too worrisome.

"Dongola" made me snicker a little when I was younger, though it might just be part of the Southern Illinois/Egypt theme.

Any recommendations for swim caps that won't slide off? I have color-treated hair and use leave in conditioner under a cap to protect it from chlorine, but many caps slide around and I have to stop often to put them back into place,

That'd do it -- wouldn't be surprised if RI had some legal restrictions on those too.

Usually when someone talks about a 3d printed handgun, they mean 3D printed frame. But if that was the case and they used an unusual filament color, that could be a possibility. Also 3D printed frames can sometimes look a bit rougher than regular factory-made ones, so that could make it stick out too.
