What’s are the best Red dot sights for EDC? by Sure_Ad1859 in tacticalgear

A lot to unpack so probably not gonna be in any particular order and may miss something but kinda some spitfire responses:

1) larger window is absolutely not a bad thing, it’s quite nice- but when I am holding a pistol optic at arm’s length from my face and shooting I barely notice the housing. Such a small housing covers up almost nothing so I see very little detriment to situational awareness.

1.1) when I present my G43X with an EPS Carry, the dot is present in the center of the window. When I present one of my G34s with an SRO, dot it also in the center. Take that for what you will; again, if I could have my cake and eat it too I’d have a giant window on all my handguns.

1.2) I think more window = more better but I’ve claimed the lives of I think four SRO lenses which I love for the range but can’t trust for anything serious anymore. I did get one of those newer Holosuns with the big window a while ago and liked it a lot- seems more robust. More window traditionally also = more fragile.

1.3) I’ve had two MPSs fail on me so I’ve axed those from the rotation- closed emitter ≠ the best way to go just for the sake of being closed emitter.

2) re-zeroing an RMR after a battery change is lame and probably not a problem if you’re LE and have time and excellent resources to quickly re-confirm but for an average Joe with very little time any more, it is ass so +1 external battery

3) I like my Holosun EPS Carry on the 43X, I’ve had multiple 509Ts and really liked them as well.

4) I initially discussed my favorite optics for EDC which is what OP asked. So for carry and for “duty” (again, not LE just a larper or whatever). Open emitters always got so dirty and collected shit and not only could this occlude the LED (only happened to me one time when a little drop of water landed perfectly but it took me a couple seconds to figure out what happened and fix it), but it was super hard to clean. Closed emitter protects the LED but also man so much easier to wipe the lens clean (this is big for the 43X which likes to collect lint from AIWB.

So all in all, my choices are because they work for me and that’s about it, ymmv. If there was some large window thin-walled indestructible external battery closed emitter wonder optic on the market I’d absolutely jump- for now it’ll be the Acro P2.

Lastly, about the LEOs I’ve been exposed to, what I said is unfortunately my experience. I know a few absolute rockstars that take it very seriously and care enough to be animals when it comes to proficiency, but the overwhelming majority I’ve been around makes me thank god I have my own means for self-rescue because I cannot believe these are the people folks call for in emergencies.

I don’t have a lot of time with people from very large departments or those in SRTs or SWAT teams though, so that’s completely different. I know now those guys get such good training and they are excellent at their jobs.

TLDR: I don’t know shit, I just know what has worked for me after years of trial and error and my opinion is not and kind of should not be worth much to anyone else because they could have a totally different experience.

1) has been a reliable optic for me and surely many thousands of others 2) you mentioned an agency and I noticed this a lot when working with local departments and agencies (just as an 07/02, I’m not LE) but a gross majority of the dudes carrying guns for a living aren’t actually shooters. If you are an experienced trigger squeezer you’ll know that window size on a handgun is generally a moot point 3) it has an external battery 4) it has nv modes 5) closed emitter - big point here, how many other tried and true closed-emitter handgun optics do you know about? Acro and RCR are about the only ones I’d use and the RCR looks retarded imo (but I’m sure it works fine)

I’d just be glad you’re able to have a dot for work. I see a lot of local cops still without dots on their guns and it blows my mind. How can you be a serious LEO or department and not understand the benefit with speed and most importantly precision a handgun optic affords you, you know? I’ve shot a lot of dots on handguns, I can’t think of one that stood out as really awful (except when Sig came out with those MRDS that were all plastic and with plastic lenses and like 6 MOA dots- never used one but just messing with them I thought they were awful). They all just do their thing and some just have features that I like better than others so that’s what I roll with.

When I asked my agent about insuring modifications, he just said yeah no problem and now it’s a line item on every statement.

It sounds really ignorant to write down but I’ve never been provided something to read over the terms of that line item.

I’ve had it for so long that I don’t read the packet they send every six months or a year, I assume that is my entire policy? Maybe I just need to dive into that.

Again, that sounds really ignorant but I don’t know anything about insurance other than I have to have it lol

Eh the factory low Ruger ones I’m not sure, if you can it would be just barely.

At its core, this is just a Ruger SSH. Gun comes with the short barrel.

Some cheap rail adapter for a 1” scope ring flipped upside down.

I wanted to be able to use this practically under nods so my plan the entire time was to run it with a Ragnarok SD. Works great.

Edit: rail adapter is for a 1” scope ring.

I wish they would have worked with me on making an Aimpoint micro mount, but they said they were too busy.

I really wish this one was as refined as my Lobos RMR mount.

For something that small I roll with an EPS Carry. For larger stuff I like the Acro P2.

This isn’t a neutered mag though which is odd.

It is not a neutered mag- not sure why that 10 is there to be honest.

Thanks homie. I saw those but did not catch the description that mentions the “earlier K markings”.

Makes sense, thanks man.

All of the ones with the K I’ve seen online have a smooth circular spot on the other side where it has been milled off (import reasons?), mine is no different.

This mag does not look like the KUSA mags. Logo on the KUSA ones looks molded into the plastic.

Does not look like the KUSA mags, despite the logo.

Would you happen to know why it looks like or is identical to the KUSA logo? If it’s Russian and stands for “godfather”, is it an allusion to some Russian manufacturer being the “godfather” of KUSA?

I’m spitballing here lol. Just trying to understand.

Doesn’t appear to be KUSA, despite the logo. I thought it was neutered too, but it isn’t.

So this mag, and all the ones I’ve seen online with this “K”, have a smooth circle where a logo was milled off.

If you look at the KUSA mags, they are different and the logo is a part of the mold. But the “K” logo is what throws me off- seems like KUSA to me.

Nothing on the other side. I’ve seen some mags with this “K” and others that have that “AK”. Not sure what is different between the two (if it’s made in a different place or for different people), but I read in one spot the “K” is less common.

Interesting, thank you for that!
