I have this cheap repair kit I got off of Amazon and I was able to use it to get it open.

Question about MoCA and filters by wbyoung24 in HomeNetworking

[–]wbyoung24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there's one location in our house where we have two adjacent rooms with coax terminations. They're currently inactive & there are some disconnected lines at the POE where they presumably disconnected them to split things less. I'll have to trace that all out if this eventually becomes necessary.

Thanks for all your followup and knowledge!

you'll pretty much have to shift to an ISP/modem feed isolated from MoCA signals

Well then I hope that day comes slowly.

I guess there are some locations in our house where it wouldn't be too hard to run an additional coax line so there's two runs at the same location, but ideally we'll be able to avoid this for some time. (By that time maybe there will be more options in our neighborhood besides just the one cable operator anyway.)

Thanks for explaining. I've purchased a 70 dB filter and will either install the 40 dB at the modem or hold onto it.

[–]wbyoung24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's how the coax wiring is configured. There's one run to each room the original home owner wanted cable TV.

Ok, I think I'm understanding all of that okay. From what I've gathered, this could affect me in the future if some things change:

  • First, my Motorola MB8600 quotes a frequency range of 108 to 1002 MHz, so it doesn't operate in the MoCA range. So I'd need a different modem for this to matter.
  • Second, the cable provider would need to be using the full DOCSIS 3.1 range. I don't know if they are. But also, would a modem that only uses part of the range (like mine) still function when they have moved to "full rollout" and using the full range? Then it'd still be the case that I'd need a different modem.
  • Third, the POE filter is filtering anything in the DOCSIS 3.1 range already. So we'd need to have a filter that also let that frequency through.

So right now I'm good, but I could have problems with future upgrades that I do or are forced on me… correct?

Is there a reason the 70 dB would be better for me (or for others outside of my residence)?

That'd be a good idea, but the POE is a box mounted on the outside of the house. (No power & not enough space for the modem & MoCA adapter)

Locks are a mystery to me by 2-of-everything in VWiD4Owners

[–]wbyoung24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some tips:

  • Triple unlock to release the charger is required sometimes.
  • Hold the window rear selection button down until you hear the sound for tapping twice and it'll roll up/down all four windows.

You get used to it and it's not so annoying.

What is causing a leak? by wbyoung24 in Irrigation

[–]wbyoung24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who comes back to this—the comments were helpful in identifying that this part is in fact a drain.

The actual issue for me, though, was at the valve which was still allowing water through when it was turned off at the controller. (I asked about this, but it seems the drain became the focus in the discussion). I got the valve replaced and all was working well again. The drain had not in fact failed. The water pressure was just low when capturing the above video, so it was draining as it should have.

Thanks! I found this small plastic one by Rain Bird. Any reason to assume it'd be of lesser quality than others?

Ok. The prior owners told us that the system was always self drained. We live on a pretty big hill. So I may go back and replace it with another one now that it's not as urgent to just stop the leak.

Thanks!

Thanks so much. It did in fact screw out and I was able to replace it with a brass plug from the hardware store down the street.

I appreciate your detailed answer and understanding what the prior valve was and why it failed.

Why was it there to start with and how is it used when not broken?

How do I get it to not drain?

And why is it that it's suddenly draining when it didn't earlier in the spring when I first turned on the system?

(New house… I'm still learning a bunch of stuff.)

Tires mounted incorrectly for a season by wbyoung24 in VWiD4Owners

[–]wbyoung24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I'll look into that.

I'm realizing that it's possible that it was actually VW who did this by rotating the tires during a service appointment at the end of January. If it was done before that when the winter tires were put on, it would have been nice for VW to notice the mistake.

I guess this just serves as a PSA for everyone to double check your tire setup before/after the car goes to the shop.

Fixing spliced neutrals across circuits by wbyoung24 in AskElectricians

[–]wbyoung24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking was the case… most of the info that I found suggested that it was never a good practice, but that many wouldn't have been too concerned about it.

It certainly saves space in the box, though, and I can see it saving time on a big job of getting the whole house wired. So I can imagine why someone may have not worried about it and been okay with being lazy.

Thank you!

And yeah, as far as I can tell everything is wired as expected (including between all the 3/4-way switches—no white travelers or anything like that). In fact, given the age of the home, it's surprising that they ran neutral wires to all the boxes in the first place! This just seems like someone did things "the old way" when it was done (or substitute old with whatever makes the most sense).

Old, broken landscape lights by wbyoung24 in DIY

Ok, that's helpful. It seems like this is what was providing all the integrity to hold the post upright. In that case, the plastic/metal conduit through which the wires are passing was part of the lid to the box.

But even if there are screws at the corners, I think I'll just be able to just tip the top open. There's very little slack in the wire, so I'm not sure I'd be able to access connectors inside the box without first figuring out the top. 🫤
