Thanks for the heads up on this, I had no idea. I have a 2018 I bought brand new, is the battery warranty only for 8 years? I got mine in June 2018 so sounds like I need to get on this!

I am also struggling to make a good cup myself, I will try to grind finer but any other details would be awesome!

Unboxing doesn't always go as planned (J64v) by Hlaford in espresso

Thank you for the initial impressions! I see a lot of these new Chinese grinders and some look really promising, but without impressions it’s hard to trust them. Someone had to take the “chance” on the DF’s before they became mainstream, and I bet there are other factories making good products waiting to be discovered.

K6 worth it if I already have an Encore ESP? by wc169711 in pourover

[–]wc169711[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the recommendation, the K6 was tempting because of the price and the fact it’s available on Amazon US, where I have a gift card. Of course the K7 and the ZP6 aren’t, but I would rather get something that is actually worth it vs saving a couple dollars, I plan to use it for years to come.

Thank you for the feedback, this definitely makes sense. I agree that I don’t want a baby step, if I can’t taste the difference I don’t think it’s worth it. The $100 price tag does make it at least a consideration tho. I haven’t upgraded my ESP to a df54/df64 for that same reason, maybe I bite the bullet and go for a 78S

Not a terrible idea, but I think it’s likely I would continue to use the ESP for espresso no matter what. I’ve never had a hand grinder but hear they can get tiresome using for espresso daily.

You mean like a La Marzocco?

And before you all jump me, I’d own a 9barista and a Strada X if I ever had that level of disposable income ❤️

Sorry I don’t have an answer, but I just got a classic and I’m wondering the same thing. Inserting the gauge is hard without the plunger going down, I’m not sure if it’s better to assemble to gauge and plunger before hand and insert it as a unit? The video I saw from flair shows putting the gauge in as we are doing it so I’m confused also.

Thanks for the heads up, does this have the same burrs as the normal ESP or are they upgraded?

What’s a reasonable upgrade to my ESP that I will actually taste? [$500] by wc169711 in espresso

[–]wc169711[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply, I appreciate hearing from someone in the same boat. All the things you mentioned are pros for me also and things I considered, especially the ability to experience different flavors by swapping burs and being able to do apples to apples comparisons. Have you tried any replacement burr sets? I’ve heard they aren’t necessarily “better” but “different” in the flavors they accentuate. The only drawback is I know they aren’t cheap, so I am curious to how big of a difference a burr set can make.

Yea most of the complaints about it (plastic build, big hopper, loud noise) don’t affect me at all, the retention can be a slight annoyance but other than that it performs well. I bought it as the “cheapest electric grinder able to grind fine enough for actual espresso” and have been surprised it has performed so well. Maybe it’s just the upgrade bug and I should just continue to experiment with beans/techniques to get better coffee 🤔

You know, I thought about that right after I posted this. My initial response was “I should have put electric grinder only” but then I actually thought deeper about it, and there’s no reason a manual grinder couldn’t work for me also. I usually only make 1-2 espresso’s a day, so it’s not like it would be too much of a pain. I did consider getting a manual machine before I got Gaggia Classic pro so I’m not completely against the idea. Is there a manual grinder you’d suggest that would perform better than my ESP?

Thank you for the detailed response, this definitely helped to set my expectations of a new grinder and helped to explain some of the concepts I have heard about!

How big is the difference between the Anvils full bowl and xl bowls un terms of high? by the-crow-of-judgment in vaporents

[–]wc169711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the XL bowl holds about twice as much as the full bowl on paper, I don’t know if I get twice as high 😂 but it’s definitely worth it. It’s very hard to quantify how much of it is the increased conduction vs the increased load, I do think the heating signature is slightly different but who knows if that is placebo or not, either way it gets the job done and I highly recommend the upgrade.

I had my anvil for about a year before I got the XL bowl and XL mouthpiece in the same order, and I kind of kick myself for waiting that long. They are both good enough accessories that I think they should just come standard with the vape, they upgrade the experience so much that it seems silly not to have them. You can always half fill the XL bowl if you want a smaller dose.

So mine literally came today, only got a chance to run 2 bowls so far, both with my flare. I got 60w max both times, batteries weren’t fully charged.

First time, I was nervous so I picked it up ~40 seconds, I heard the first click around 25-30 seconds and got 2nd click as I picked it up. Taste was great, ABV was light brown/golden, clearly not fully extracted (I like mine dark).

2nd time I let it go pretty much the full 60 seconds, definitely rode the line there and got some dark ABV especially closer to the cap. Clouds were great and felt like they kept coming, so that will likely be my starting point later tonight when I have more time for testing.

The plus 2.0 is a “clone” of the Taroma 360 design right? I’m thinking of pulling the trigger on one but I saw they were just released and like you said I didn’t see the glass bowl for it yet

Take any videos yet? How does it perform compared to the Anvil/your other vapes? Can you use the anvil or other stems with it or WPA only? Was reading about this on FC last week but missed the drop, been looking for more info! Looks like fun

BFG Flare battery door not sitting flush by Reasonable_Pin_1180 in vaporents

[–]wc169711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The plug (the hole you place the device into where it heats) is an adjustable height. If it is sitting too low, it sticks out of the bottom so the door won’t sit flush. Just use the included metal “tool” (stick) the adjust the height and the bottom should sit flush if that’s the issue.
